Ben Light Gymnasium 

Ithaca College’s gymnasium was dedicated on December 

5, 1964, and was later named after former administrator 

Ben Light in action taken by the school’s board of trustees 

in February 1968. The basketball court, with seating 

capacity for 2,500 spectators, is housed in the Laurence S. 

Hill Physical Education Center on campus. 

Ben Light was a football, basketball, and baseball 

standout at Ithaca College. A 1936 graduate, he was 

hired as a faculty member and coach. Following World 

War II Light took over the men’s basketball program and 

guided the Bombers to a 70-51 record over the next seven 

seasons. In 1952 he was named the school’s first director 

of admissions and placement, and seven years later he 

became secretary of Ithaca College. Light was chosen as 

vice president of development in 1968, a position he held 

until his death. 

Laurence S. Hill was dean of physical education at 

Ithaca from 1929 until 1957. Both Light and Hill were 

inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame. 

The Ithaca men’s basketball team defeated Lock 

Haven, 77-57, in the first game played at the new gym on 

December 9, 1964. George Valesente, the current baseball 

coach at Ithaca, helped the Bombers to victory with 16 

points that evening. 

Ben Light Gymnasium has played host to numerous 

volleyball tournaments, highlighted by three rounds of the 

1994 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship. The 

Bombers hosted a quarterfinal match, beating Springfield 

to advance to the national semifinals, and were selected to 

host the semifinal and championship round. A year later, 

Ithaca hosted Springfield in the quarterfinals and rallied 

from a 2-0 deficit to reach the final four for the second year 

in a row. 

The oldest tradition is the Bomber Invitational, which 

began during the 1973 season. This tournament continues 

to attract premier teams in Division III volleyball. The 

invitational was on hiatus from 1977 to 1986 and from 

1993 to 1994. 

In 1977 Ithaca was the site of the Eastern Association 

of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (EAIAW) northeast 

regional tournament and the Bombers took fourth place. 

The following year the Bombers hosted the New York 

State Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women 

(NYSAIAW) tournament. In 1986 and 1989 Ithaca was 

the site for the Independent College Athletic Conference 

(ICAC) Championship, placing first and third, respectively. 

Ithaca hosted and placed second in the New York State 

Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) 

Championship in 1993. Ithaca hosted a quarterfinal match 

against Trinity (Texas) in 1999, losing to the Tigers, 3-0. 

The volleyball team has won over 76 percent of its 

matches in Ben Light Gymnasium since 1974. 

In addition to Ithaca’s volleyball team, the facility is 

also the home arena for intercollegiate gymnastics, men’s 

and women’s basketball and wrestling.

Twelve invitations to the NCAA Division III playoffs 

since 1993 have helped solidify Ithaca’s standing as 

one of the most successful in the nation, but the program’s 

highlights extend back much further. Since volleyball 

became a varsity sport in 1968, the team has posted a 

winning record in 35 of 43 seasons. The Bombers have 

recorded an overall mark of 1,118-466-4 (.705). 

The last 12 NCAA playoff appearances have come 

under current head coach Janet Donovan. Hired in 1992, 

Donovan helped the Bombers to back-to-back 37-13 records 

her first two years. Ithaca won its second straight Eastern 

College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in 1992, 

led by Laurie Roberts, who set a school record with 3,774 

career assists. In 1993 the Bombers advanced to the NCAA 

tournament. 

The 1994 team finished 53-4, setting a school record 

for wins, and made the program’s first trip to the NCAA 

Division III semifinals. The Bombers hosted the event in 

Ben Light Gymnasium. Tracy Swyers finished her career as 

the Bombers’ career leader in kills (1,659), while Lisa Black 

set the career digs record (1,644). All-American Melissa Kryz 

had a school-record 549 total blocks. Sindie Shollenberger 

set a record with 278 career service aces. Swyers was named 

a first-team all-American, and Black and Kryz picked up 

second-team all-American honors. 

Bonnie McDowell, a first-team all-American in 1995, 

posted a school-record 614 kills and led the Bombers back to 

the national semifinals, where they finished fourth, ending 

the year with a 41-4 record. Teammate Heidi Nichols was 

named to the 1995 all-America second team. The following 

year Ithaca stretched its streak to four consecutive 

appearances in the NCAA playoffs and reached the 20-win 

level for the seventh straight year. Nichols again received all- 

America honors as a first-team selection. 

The 1997 team went 32-6 and reached the championship 

match of the New York regional. Nichols became the 

program’s first volleyball athlete to be named a firstteam 

all-American two years in a row and to receive three 

consecutive appointments to the all-America team. She 

was also named a second-team academic all-American and 

set Ithaca records for career kills (1,855) and blocks (671). 

Nichols, also an all-American high jumper with Ithaca’s 

track & field team, earned the NCAA’s Woman of the Year 

award for the state of New York—an honor encompassing 

Division I, II and III athletes. 

In 1998 the Bombers advanced to the NCAA regional 

championship match for the fourth time in five years. Eleven 

of their losses came to NCAA regional-qualifying teams. 

Freshman setter Jen Salmon was voted to the American 

Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-region team. 

The next season the team recorded another 30 wins and 

captured the regional title, defeating Cortland, 3-2, in the 

regional championship match. In 1999 Salmon, along with 

teammates Robin Dalton, Rebecca Helmetsie and Jessica 

Raymond, were voted to AVCA all-region team. 

The 2000 team was back in the NCAA regional 

championship match. Senior Stephanie Raefski was named 

to the District I All-Academic first team in addition to

the AVCA all-region team with teammates Karen McCord, 

Salmon and Raymond. A year later the Bombers advanced 

to the regional finals for the fourth consecutive season. 

Salmon, Raymond and sophomore Janet Hammond were 

named to the all-region team. In 2002 Raymond earned 

her fourth straight all-conference recognition and became 

the program’s first all-American in five years. In 2003, two 

Bombers were named all-Americans as Julie Roth earned 

second-team honors and Hammond received honorable 

mention. Roth earned third-team all-American honors 

in 2004, along with freshman Katie Hause, who received 

honorable mention. The team finished 27-13 and won the 

Empire 8 championship. The Bombers repeated as the 

Empire 8 champions in 2005 and posted an overall record of 

31-9. Seniors Andrea Blitz and Jen Cramer and sophomore 

Amanda Hubbard each received AVCA all-American 

honorable mention. 

Hubbard received AVCA all-America honorable mention 

again in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, she led the Bombers to a 

30-9 record and NYSWCAA and ECAC championships. 

Ithaca won an ECAC Upstate N.Y. Championship in 

2009 to end their season with three straight victories and a 

26-17 record before returning to the NCAA tournament in 

2010 on an automatic bid from earning the Empire 8 title. 

Coach Nancy Hicks led Ithaca into its first varsity 

season in 1968 and guided the team again in 1970 and 1971. 

Barbara Blodgett took over in 1969. The 1971 season saw 

Ithaca make its first appearance in the postseason, a fourthplace 

showing in the NYSAIAW playoffs. 

Sarah Rich guided the team from 1972 to 1977 and then 

again from 1979 to 1984. Jane Arnett was the school’s coach 

in 1978. Under coach Rich, the Bombers extended their 

season every year except for one, with three straight trips to 

the NCAA regionals (1982-84). 

Rhonda Faunce, a four-year hitter for Ithaca, was 

a standout performer during Rich’s reign. Faunce, who 

set single-season Ithaca records for total blocks (207) and 

service aces (94), was the first Bomber volleyball player to 

earn all-American honors. 

Coach Jane Jacobs picked up where Rich left off in 

1985. During her three-year stint, the Bombers made two 

appearances in the NCAA playoffs. Jacobs compiled a 115- 

33 mark, and her 1987 team tied the school record for wins, 

going 44-9. 

Denise Dewey, Cathy Franz, Michelle Holmes, Jocy 

Jones, and Adrian Warstadt were top players for Jacobs. 

Dewey still holds the Ithaca record for digs in a season (769), 

which she set in 1987. 

Sheila Deam directed the program from 1988-91. After 

two rebuilding seasons, she worked the program back into 

playoff contention with a 26-21 record in 1990 and a 32- 

15 mark in 1991. Ithaca won its first ECAC championship 

in 1991. Beverly Vosefski was one of the team’s top players 

during Deam’s tenure.

JANET DONOVAN 

Head Coach 

Janet Donovan completed her 19th season at the helm of the Ithaca volleyball program with the 2010 

season. Her list of achievements includes a 582-241 record (.707) and 12 trips to the NCAA playoffs. 

She ranks as Ithaca’s winningest volleyball coach. Donovan reached a career milestone in 2007, winning 

her 500th match at Ithaca as the Bombers defeated Nazareth in the NYSWCAA playoffs. 

Hired in 1992, Donovan posted the highest first-year win total (37) by any Ithaca volleyball coach 

and led the Bombers to an ECAC championship. The following season saw Ithaca start a nine-year 

streak of NCAA playoff appearances. In 1994 Donovan led the team to a school-record 53 wins and the 

program’s first berth in the NCAA semifinals. The Bombers were back in the semifinals the following 

year and made their ninth straight trip to the NCAA tournament in 2001. Ithaca returned to the NCAA 

playoffs in 2004 and 2005. After claiming the Empire 8 crown, Ithaca most recently returned to the 

NCAA Tournament in 2010. Donovan has won three ECAC championships with two coming in the 2007 

and 2009 seasons. The 2008 season also featured the Bombers winning their second New York State title. 

Donovan was named AVCA region coach of the year and Empire Athletic Association coach of the 

year in 1993 and 1994. In 1999 she again earned the honor of AVCA region coach of the year. In 1994 she was the Ithaca Journal’s 

choice as female coach of the year, while most recently earning Empire 8 Coach of the Year in 2010. During her career at Ithaca, 12 

players have earned a total of 21 all-America honors. In addition, five Bombers have been named academic all-Americans in that span. 

A 1987 graduate of Cortland, Donovan was a letter winner on a team that made NCAA regional appearances from 1985 to 1987. She 

was also the Red Dragons’ team captain in 1987. After scholastic volleyball coaching stints at Tully High School and Lyons Central 

High School, Donovan took over as coach at Keuka College in 1990. She led the Warriors to a 24-14 mark and a state tournament 

berth. As a graduate assistant volleyball coach at Humboldt State University in 1991, Donovan helped the Division II Lumberjacks to 

a 24-10 record and third place in the Northern California Athletic Conference. The non-scholarship institution ended its season ranked 

21st in the nation. 

In addition to her volleyball duties, Donovan is an instructor in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. She spent 

four years as an assistant coach with Ithaca’s women’s lacrosse team and five years as an assistant track & field coach. She and her 

husband, Bill, have two children, Will and Kaci. 

ADAM RICHWALDER 

Assistant Coach 

Adam Richwalder completed his fifth season 

with the Bombers in 2010. He works with 

the team’s blockers and coordinates the team’s 

defensive strategy and blocking schemes. 

Richwalder is a 2006 graduate of Ithaca, 

where he majored in speech communication. 

His experience also includes a stint coaching the 

Southern Tier age 17-18 girls’ club volleyball 

team.
