4. SEEKING EMPLOYMENT IN AUSTRIA<br />

Pursuant to <strong>Austria</strong>’s membership <strong>in</strong> the European Union, EU/EEA citizens, Swiss citizens and their<br />

family members (spouses, children, stepchildren and adopted children) are entitled to live and work<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Austria</strong> without work permits <strong>in</strong> accordance with the pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of “free movement of labour.” Special<br />

rules apply <strong>in</strong> the case of new EU citizens from Bulgaria, Rumania, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland,<br />

Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary. (Also see section 4.9)<br />

4.1 Seek<strong>in</strong>g Employment from the EU/EEA Countries and Switzerland <strong>in</strong> <strong>Austria</strong><br />

Prior to arriv<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>Austria</strong> you can obta<strong>in</strong> various <strong>in</strong>formation and use various services on the<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g employment, prov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>in</strong>formation, regional job opportunities us<strong>in</strong>g EURES<br />

seek<strong>in</strong>g employment us<strong>in</strong>g the AMS (Public Employment Service <strong>Austria</strong>) website;<br />

you can also register onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the eJob-Room<br />

AMS (Public Employment Service <strong>Austria</strong>) services: career focus test (career compass),<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractive application tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, application coach (application tips, etc.)<br />

database (Berufs<strong>in</strong>formationsdatenbank (BIS)), career lexica, qualifications barometer<br />

based on qualifications), further education database (Weiterbildungsdatenbank),<br />

career <strong>in</strong>formation centres (Berufs<strong>in</strong>formationszentren (BIZ)), barrier-free access to AMS<br />

After arriv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Austria</strong> you have to observe the follow<strong>in</strong>g when seek<strong>in</strong>g employment:<br />

to be able to claim unemployment benefits from your country of orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Austria</strong> (such as<br />

unemployment benefits) it is necessary to personally register at the competent office <strong>in</strong> <strong>Austria</strong><br />

assistance dur<strong>in</strong>g employment seek<strong>in</strong>g as well as career advisory services can be received<br />

from the competent offices<br />

4.2 EURES (European Employment Services)<br />

job vacancies. Additionally you can post your personal CV onl<strong>in</strong>e which can be viewed by potential<br />

employers.<br />

More than 700 specially tra<strong>in</strong>ed EURES advisors work <strong>in</strong> the public employment services <strong>in</strong> all EU/<br />

EEA countries and Switzerland to support and advise citizens seek<strong>in</strong>g a job <strong>in</strong> another EU/EEA<br />

country or Switzerland. You can f<strong>in</strong>d your EURES advisers responsible for the desired region us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the EURES website.<br />
