Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of Pope: 

Preparing an Annual Report is a wonderful opportunity 

for us to pause and reflect upon the many 

memories and successes experienced last year in our 

school. Although space does not permit us to record 

every notable achievement, I hope that you will 

rejoice in the good news that is Pope John Paul II 

High School. 

As you peruse the “School Highlights” beginning 

on the next page, it is no accident that we begin by 

reflecting upon the spiritual formation of our students. 

It is this dimension, the opportunity to educate 

the whole person, which sets Pope and other Catholic 

schools apart from the field. As Catholic educators, 

we are privileged to partner with parents in providing 

for the educational and spiritual formation of their 

sons and daughters. 

As a Catholic school and as a college-prep school, 

we enable our students to grow in faith and knowledge. 

Our spiritual strength is well documented, and 

so is our academic prowess. Review the list of colleges 

on page 12 to see where our most recent graduates 

have elected to attend. Then study the impressive 

testing trends shown on page 11 to see how our students 

outperform their counterparts not only here in 

Florida, but throughout the nation as well. 

Additionally, our students complement their classroom 

learning experiences with a wide variety of cocurricular 

experiences. These range from athletic and 

academic competitions, to drama, student government 

and interest-specific clubs. Participation in these 

activities enables our students to develop team-building 

skills, leadership qualities and time management 

strategies to help prepare them more fully for their 

tomorrows. 

This formula for success has worked in the past at 

Pope. I invite you to take note of the alumni achievements 

showcased in the “Class Notes” section at the 

end of this magazine. Their success serves not only as 

a source of pride for us, but also as inspiration for our 

current students. 

Sandwiched in between accolades for our students 

and our alumni is a listing of the many wonderful 

people whose generosity has sustained Pope throughout 

our first 30 years. We value your friendship and 

past support. However, as you can tell from the financial 

charts on page 13, your school and the students 

we serve continue to need your financial help. 

So as we celebrate the past school year, we also enter 

the 2010-2011 school year with optimism and hope 

for our future. The data on page 14 reveal that we 

have enrolled our largest freshman class since 2006. 

This year, the freshman class is also the largest of the 

four classes at Pope. We are reversing a trend where 

the largest class has been the one graduating. This 

certainly bodes well for our future. 

In closing, I have one favor to ask. After you have 

read our Annual Report, I hope that you will share it 

with an interested friend, relative or neighbor. Pope is 

just too good to be Boca’s best-kept secret!

School Highlights 

It’s All Good – And Getting Better! 

The moniker on a popular Pope tee-shirt last year 

read: “POPE: It’s All Good…And Getting Better!” A 

sampling of highlights from the 2009-10 academic 

year illustrates that this was indeed another good 

year for Pope, and that the school and the achievements 

of our students continue to get better each 

year. 

At Pope, we constantly seek to develop spiritual, 

physical and moral gifts through academic excellence. 

As a Catholic school, we have the responsibility 

and the opportunity to do so by educating the 

whole person. We help guide our students down the 

twin pathways of academic excellence and spiritual 

strength. 

Let’s take a look at their journey through the 2009- 

10 school year.

Spiritual 

Formation 

Early in the year, community representatives from 

25 organizations and churches came to Pope to 

participate in our annual Community Service Fair. 

Students visited informational booths to learn more 

about volunteer opportunities in the area. Campus 

Minister Diane DeMarco noted, “Bringing these 

agencies on-campus increases our students’ awareness 

of the wide variety of needs that exist in our 

community. This is a great way to help our students 

match up their interests with the needs of others.” 

Students at Pope are required to contribute a minimum 

of 25 hours of community service each year. 

Many students elect to go far beyond the minimum 

expectation. Last year, 87 students each volunteered 

more than 100 hours of service. All told, the 464 

students at Pope provided 27,322 hours of service to 

our community.

Helping others took on many forms last year. Prior to 

the start of classes in August, 15 students participated 

in a weeklong mission trip to the Catholic Heart 

Workcamp in Mobile, Alabama. Accompanied by 

Diane DeMarco, Coach Nate Robinson and math 

instructor Nalline Baliram, the students repaired and 

painted houses for the poor and elderly.

Others gave the gift of life by donating over 182 

units of blood during two blood drives held at Pope. 

For the fourth year in a row, the Community Blood 

Center of South Florida awarded our school the 

trophy for the largest number of blood units collected 

in the small school division. 

Twenty-five agencies participated in the Service Fair. 


In addition to assisting many agencies in our area, 

our students also collected over $3,600 to support 

earthquake victims in Haiti. They donated clothing 

items to send to Haiti and offered individual and 

group prayers for those impacted by the earthquake. 

All underclass students and all faculty, staff and 

administrators participated in spiritual retreats last 

year. Additionally, 110 of the 128 seniors participated 

in one of three Kairos retreats. This is a four-day, 

three-night spiritual experience guided by adult and 

student leaders.

Academics 

As noted on the charts on page 11, Pope students 

continued to score well on both the SAT and ACT 

college entrance exams. The SAT average score for 

members of our Class of 2010 was 1571 — nearly 

100 points higher than the Florida average of 1473 

and well above the national average of 1509. Our 

ACT average of 23.4 was also higher than the Florida 

average of 19.5 and the national average of 21.0. 

Carolina Filippi 

Last year, 193 juniors and seniors earned college 

credit by taking one of six dual enrollment courses 

with Lynn University and/or St. Thomas University. 

Additionally, 107 students sat for a total of 209 

Advanced Placement exams in 10 test areas. These 

numbers are up from 82 students sitting for 162 AP 

exams in 9 test areas in the previous year. 

Math Club moderator Jeff Brooks had another 

competitive team entered in Florida Math League 

contests. Sophomore David Builes finished third in 

Palm Beach County and 13th in the entire state. 

Our team finished third in the county and among 

the top 30 schools in the state.

Upon graduation from Pope, our seniors were 

in demand for college acceptances. They were 

offered acceptances from 117 different 

colleges and universities. A listing of the 46 

schools where our recent graduates elected to 

attend for their first year of collegiate studies 

is listed on page 12. 

Three out of five seniors qualified for the 

Florida Bright Futures Scholarships. All told, 

90 of the 128 members of our Class of 2010 

were offered close to 200 college scholarships 

valued at $4.1 million.

went to Valedictorian William Halnon (Tulane 

University) and Salutatorian Janine Duffy 

(Georgetown University). John Churey and

John and Lauren each received a $2,500 scholarship from the Frank and Vera Ferola Charitable 

Foundation. The monetary award was provided in memory of Frank F. Ferola, Jr. ’83, the first 

recipient of the school’s highest honor at the 1983 graduation ceremony.

In girls’ soccer, Brittany D’Addio 

(Flagler College) became the first student 

-athlete at Pope to top 100 goals and 

100 assists in soccer. She was named 

“Athlete of the Year” in girls’ soccer 

by the Palm Beach Post. Brittany and 

teammate Morgan Currie (Brevard 

Community College) will continue 

playing soccer in college. 

The girls’ lacrosse team captured its 

first-ever district title. Lauren Murray 

(University of Central Florida) scored 

five goals as the Eagles downed St. 

Andrew’s, 17-9. Teammate Quinn 

Bedenbaugh signed to play lacrosse at 

Howard University, while Katie 

Capobianco elected to play softball at 

Daytona State College. 


Athletics 

Last year, sixty percent of the students at Pope 

participated on one or more of our athletic teams. 

Our student-athletes had a number of individual 

and team achievements. Junior Stephanie Schappert 

continued her family’s tradition of excellence in 

running by capturing her second straight Class 2A 

State Championship in cross country. Stephanie and 

her older sister, Nicole Schappert ’05 (Villanova 

University), are the only sisters to win two FHSAA 

titles apiece! 

Stephanie followed up her fall title by capturing two 

gold medals in the spring at the Class 2A state track 

and field meet. She ran personal best times in both 

the 800 and 1,600 meter runs. Teammate Olivia Fay 

(Williams College) also captured a gold medal with 

her first place finish in the 3,200 meter run. Stephanie 

and Olivia also teamed up with Katie Roussin and 

Monica Falgons for a fifth place team finish in the 

3,200 relay. The Palm Beach Post named Stephanie 

“Athlete of the Year” and Nate Robinson “Coach of 

the Year” for girls’ track and field.

Are you ready for some football? 

Not to be outdone, the boys’ sports teams also posted 

a number of achievements. The football team recorded 

its most wins in several years. Linebacker Joey 

Grosso (University of Pennsylvania) was named 

first-team All-State in Class 1A. Joey and two teammates 

are now playing football on the collegiate level: 

James Talerico (Yale University) and Mackenzie 

Mulligan (Sacred Heart University). 

In boys’ basketball, Troy Lieb (Averett University) 

was named first-team All County as he averaged 

nearly 24 points per game. 

In tennis action, both the boys’ and girls’ teams posted 

winning records. The boys took second place honors 

among the eight teams competing at District. The 

girls’ placed fourth among the eight schools.

Boys’ lacrosse posted a record of 13-5 as they advanced to the 

district championship game. Clay Noell signed to play lacrosse 

at Salisbury University. Meanwhile, Andrew Bolger was 

nationally recognized as he received the “Exemplary Coaching 

Award” at the US Lacrosse National Convention in Baltimore. 

At Pope’s Athletic Awards night, Jill Anderson (cross country) 

and Jeff Atkins (girls’ lacrosse) were awarded “Coach of the 

Year” honors. Troy Lieb was named “Male Athlete of the Year” 

and Katie Capobianco “Female Athlete of the Year”. 



Drama 

Thespian Accolades 

Artistic Director Vincent Castellano directed two 

productions last year – Damn Yankees in the fall and 

Jekyll and Hyde The Musical in the spring. The spring 

musical was entered into the Cappies (Critics and 

Awards Program) competition where Pope received 

Cappies nominations in four categories. 

Our nominees were Giuseppe Barioli as Male 

Vocalist; Kristen McClave as Female Vocalist; Celine 

Boccia and Samantha Gentile for Props and Effects; 

and “The Confrontation” performed by Giuseppe 

Barioli as Best Song. 

Additionally, Stephanie LoVerde (Lynn University) 

and Hogan Seidel (Emerson College) received the 

Commendee Award for Outstanding Achievement in 

High School Theater, while Stephanie Suau was 

similarly recognized for her contributions as a lead 

critic for the Cappies. 

In thespian competitions, Nick Rapuano won the 

Critic’s Choice award at District for his performance 

of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”. At the same 

competition, Superior ratings were earned by Alana 

Miller and Nicolas Aquino for their solo musicals; 

Rebecca Tiufekchiev (University of Florida) and 

Cassandra Aguililla for their monologues; and, 

Jessica Aquino (Nova Southeastern University) and 

Nicolas Aquino for a duet musical. Pope students 

also captured 15 Excellent ratings at District.

Later in the year, our students performed well at the 

State Thespian competition in Tampa. Alana Miller 

earned a Superior rating for her solo musical. Straight 

Excellence ratings went to Cassandra Aguililla, 

Jessica Aquino, Nicolas Aquino and Nick Rapuano.

Students from Pope have traditionally scored higher than their counterparts in Florida and across the nation on both 

the ACT and the SAT college admissions tests. The charts below show the composite score trend for the past four years. 

As the charts reveal, our scores have increased steadily during this period. Scores from Florida and the nation have 

remained flat or even declined.

Financial Note – During the 2009-10 fiscal year, operating expenditures exceeded operating revenues by $679,000. As a 

point of comparison, the operating deficit during the previous fiscal year was $845,000. Although our financial picture is 

improving, we are still operating with a deficit. We will continue our efforts to build enrollment, increase fund-raising, and 

control costs. Our goal is to have a balanced budget within three years.

Young Scholars Honored 

Ten Receive Presidential Merit Awards 

Ten students from seven elementary schools in Palm 

Beach and Broward counties were honored at a 

Presidential Merit Award Reception and Dinner on 

April 7. Each honoree received a $1,000 Presidential 

Merit Award, renewable for all four years of high 

school. This marked the second year that the 

awards have been given by Pope John Paul II High 

School to incoming freshman students. 

Admissions Director Barbara Harbin served as Master 

of Ceremonies for the celebration attended by the 

recipients and their parents and elementary school 

principals. “Tonight is very special,” noted Harbin. 

“We are recognizing outstanding students who 

bring great potential and promise with them 

to Pope.”

displayed not only outstanding academic achievements, 

but also commendable leadership and service 

qualities and an established record of involvement in 

clubs and activities. 

The ten students receiving this award were: Andrew 

Clum from Eagles Landing Middle School in Boca 

Raton (Mr. James Campbell, Principal); Maria 

Fonseca from Mary Help of Christians Catholic 

School in Parkland (Mr. Robert Messina, Principal); 

Dylan Lang and Esther Ponce de Leon from St. Joan 

of Arc School in Boca Raton (Sr. Ellen Murphy, 

RSM, Principal); Jonathan Vilardi from St. Joseph’s

excellence and spiritual strength.”

Honored at President’s 

Club Dinner 

First Alum to Receive Outstanding Eagle Award 

The inaugural President’s Club Dinner was held in the 

Cafetorium on October 6 with over 100 guests in attendance. 

The event was provided as a way for the school to show its 

appreciation to a number of key donors and friends. Bishop 

Gerald Barbarito, area clergy, alumni representatives, parents of 

current and former students, and key volunteer leaders were also 

present. 

Dr. Michael Coury, President of Pope, took this occasion to 

reflect upon his first seven months at the school. He commented 

upon the great amount of pride and enthusiasm that he had 

observed in so many members of the school family. “Pope is like 

a rose ready to bloom,” remarked Coury. “Everyone seems eager 

to do their part to help our school blossom and succeed.” 

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 

Outstanding Eagle Award. This award was established in 1987 to 

recognize individuals and couples who have made an extraordinary 

difference in the life of the school. Past recipients have 

included an Archbishop and a Bishop, several priests and a sister, 

as well as moms and dads and other friends and benefactors of 

the school. 

“Tonight’s honoree symbolizes the maturation of our school,” 

said Coury. “When the award was initiated in 1987, this recipient 

was just graduating from Pope as a member of the Class of 

1987.” Coury presented the award to J. Scott McCleneghen ’87, 

the first alum of the school to be so honored. 

McCleneghen and a group of other alums got reconnected with 

their alma mater a few years ago when they learned that the football 

team was in dire need of uniforms. They contributed 

$5,000 to help purchase the uniforms. This act of giving back to 

Pope led to the reformation of the school’s Alumni Association. 

The philanthropic efforts of the Alumni Association have 

expanded since that time. Under McCleneghen’s leadership as 

President of the Alumni Association, the group has contributed 

monies not only for athletics, but also for drama, technology 

and student financial aid. Under his leadership, the Children of 

Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund was initiated. “Knowing how 

much Pope meant to us,” remarked McCleneghen, “it is very 

satisfying to know that we can now do much to help the next 

generation of Eagles coming to Pope.” 

The evening concluded with closing remarks and a blessing from 

Bishop Barbarito.

During half-time ceremonies at the 2009 homecoming 

football game, two of Pope’s earliest graduates were 

inducted into the school’s Alumni Hall of Fame. Paul 

Cipolla, a member of the school’s first graduating class 

in 1983, and his wife, Heidi (Ladika ’84) Cipolla, were 

the latest recipients of this honor. 

School President Michael Coury presented the 

couple with recognition plaques while fellow 

alumni, friends and spectators watched. 

“Paul and Heidi are wonderful ambassadors 

for Pope,” noted Coury. “The love 

for their alma mater is obvious. Both 

have played a key role in raising awareness, 

pride and support for Pope.” 

The couple, friends since their childhood 

days at St. Joan of Arc Catholic 

School, played key roles in the start-up of 

Pope’s Alumni Association. Paul serves as the 

group’s Vice President, while Heidi is a member of 

its Executive Committee. The couple has also chaired 

all three of the South County Shootout Fishing 

Tournaments. This Alumni Association event has provided 

supplemental funding for the school’s athletic 

programs, drama program and technology needs. 

Additionally, proceeds from this event also provide 

funding for the Children of Alumni Legacy Scholarship 

program.

After high school, Paul joined the United States Coast 

Guard. Heidi graduated from the College of Boca 

Raton before earning a Masters Degree from Lynn 

University. Paul has worked in engineering sales for 

Brandel-Stephens & Co. for the past 23 years. Heidi 

has served as the Service Learning Coordinator 

and as an Associate Professor at Palm 

Beach State College for 12 years. 

The husband and wife have been 

active volunteers for both the 

parish and school at St. Joan of 

Arc. Paul has been a charter 

member of the Dad’s Club at 

the parish, as well as a volunteer 

for a number of parish fundraisers. 

He is a youth coach, too. 

Heidi’s record of community service 

also extends into her involvement 

with the Junior League of Boca Raton. 

This year will prove to be a very special one for 

the Cipolla family. Their son, Paul, graduated from St. 

Joan of Arc and is following in his parents’ footsteps as 

he entered his freshman year at Pope John Paul II 

High School. Their daughter, Claire Elise, is now an 

eighth-grader at St. Joan. She is readying herself to be 

a member of Pope’s Class of 2015. 

“We loved our days at Pope,” said Heidi. “We are so 

excited to be able to pass along the Pope experience to 

our own children.” 


Third Annual Alumni Shootout 

Fishing for Dollars Benefits Scholars 

Fishermen in 18 deep-sea fishing boats caught a 

ton of seafood while netting over $18,000 to 

benefit students in our school. The Pope John 

Paul II Alumni Association held its Third Annual 

South County Shootout on May 23. Following 

the day-long outing, boaters and friends of the 

school enjoyed feasting on the day’s fresh catch of 

kingfish, dolphin, wahoo, blackfin tuna and cobia. 

The event, held at the Royal Palm Yacht and 

Country Club Marina in Boca Raton, raised 

monies to fund special projects at the school. In 

recent years, the Alumni Association has provided 

the school with supplemental funding for our 

athletic, drama and technology departments. Last 

year, the group initiated the Children of Alumni 

Legacy Scholarship program that provided a scholarship 

award to each of the 12 second-generation 

Eagles at Pope. That number has grown to 17 

second-generation Eagles at Pope in 2010!

Paul Cipolla and Michael Fimiani, two 

members from the school’s first graduating 

class in 1983, chaired the event. They were 

assisted by their wives and a core group of 

other alumni. “We enjoy the camaraderie 

of working on this event with our friends 

from high school,” noted Fimiani. “Many 

of us have been friends for nearly 30 years.” 

Cipolla is married to Heidi Ladika, another 

Pope graduate. Their oldest child, Paul, is 

following in his parents’ footsteps at Pope. 

“We greatly benefited by our Pope experiences,” 

said Cipolla, “and we are happy 

that we can pass on the gift of a Pope 

education to our own children.” 

School President Michael Coury praised 

the alumni for their dedication, loyalty 

and support for their alma mater. “Our 

alumni are truly living the mission of our 

school,” noted Coury. “They are giving of 

themselves to help others in need.”

Over 400 “Escape” to Paradise 

On-Campus Gala Raises $60,000 

More than 400 partygoers attended the 2010 Gala – 

“Escape to Paradise” – on February 27 in the school’s 

Cafetorium. Pope’s one and only major fundraiser was a festive 

evening that raised “friends” and “funds” for the school. 

An outstanding committee, under the able leadership of 

Cathy (Johnson ’83) Silk and Kelly Liguori, saw months of 

hard work and planning produce a large turnout of guests. 

Attendees were greeted with the beat of a steel drum and 

the lure of signature drinks and great food. 

Mary Freedman and Sandy Beeh had transformed the 

school’s Cafetorium into a colorful and festive paradise, 

while Laurenne McAteer oversaw the collection of some 

200 auction items. Ily Aquino, Joan Devine, Kathy Lepore 

and Molly Reiss also played major roles as event planners 

and producers of this entertaining evening. 

Live auction items ranged from diamond heart earrings, 

travel getaways and a Labrador puppy to front row seating 

at graduation, street-naming rights and a day of playing 

hooky with the school’s president. The winner of the 

Heads or Tails game walked away with a 50-inch plasma 

big screen television, while everyone who tried their luck at 

the Wheel of Fun won a valuable gift card. 

The 2011 Gala is being planned for Saturday, February 26, 

in the school’s Cafetorium. Save the date and plan to 

attend another eventful evening for Pope.

Alicia (Rullo) Steiger is an Assistant

Palm Beach County. She was recently 

recognized as the Middle School Administrator 

of the Year by the Palm Beach 

District Counselors’ Association. She 

resides in Royal Palm Beach with her 

husband, Hans, and their two daughters, 

Caroline Margaret, age 6, and Cameron, 

age 3.

Leslie Chadwick resides in Denver, 

Colorado, where she serves as the 

Manager of Internal Communications 

for the Colorado Health Foundation. 

The organization provides grants in 

the area of health care, health coverage 

and healthy living with its mission 

being to make Colorado the healthiest 

state in the nation.

Timothy Diener initially played football 

at the University of Miami before 

transferring and earning his BA degree 

from Florida Atlantic University. He 

was involved with teaching and coaching 

at Westminster Academy and Pine 

Crest School in Fort Lauderdale before 

returning home to teach social studies 

and history at Pope.

Erinn Beck earned her BA degree in 

Psychology from Florida Atlantic 

University and her MS degree in 

Counseling Psychology from Palm 

Beach Atlantic University. She is now a 

counselor in her own mental health 

practice, as well as a parish counselor 

for St. Thomas More Catholic Church 

in Boynton Beach. 

Brittany Belcher attended the University 

of Florida before earning her BA 

degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising 

from Florida State University. She is 

a Fashion Design/Clothing Designer for 

Women's/Juniors at Rusty (Action Sports 

Surf Company). She is now engaged. 

Jacqueline Bernstein graduated from 

Florida State University with a BS degree 

in Finance and Real Estate. She later 

earned her MBA degree at the University 

of Georgia. She is a commercial real estate 

investor and works at ING Investment 

Management in Atlanta, Georgia.

Melissa (Caldera) Scarfone earned her 

BA degree in Healing Science from the 

Barbara Brennan School of Healing at 

Barry University. She is building her 

healing practice for the future, but 

currently is self-employed as a Jewelry 

Designer in her own business, Me 

Jewelry, LLC. 

Christina (Capozzi) Kopingon earned 

her BS degree in Nursing from Florida 

Atlantic University and is now pursuing 

an MS degree in Nursing at the 

University of Miami. She currently 

works at the Good Samaritan Medical 

Center as an RN in labor and delivery. 

Nick Caprio earned his BA degree in 

English Literature from the University 

of South Florida. He currently works as 

a General Contractor. He and his wife, 

Jolene, reside in Broward County, Florida. 

Christopher Lawrence Carlino attended 

Florida State University before earning 

his BA degree in Criminal Justice and 

Political Science from Florida Atlantic 

University. He was a police officer and 

now works in real estate at Real Estate 

Investment & Asset Services in Lakeland, 

Florida. He is engaged and planning 

a 2010 wedding. 

Derek Cicchitto lives in Colorado where 

he works as a Speech and Language 

Pathologist at Boulder Community 

Hospital. He earned his MS degree in 

Communication Disorders from 

Florida State University. 

Seth Cooper earned his BS degree in 

Business Management from Edgewood 

College in Madison, Wisconsin. He 

recently relocated from Hermosa Beach, 

California to Bloomington, Indiana 

where he is now enrolled in graduate 

school at Indiana University. 

Cassandra (Costa) Gawtrey currently 

works as an Office Administrator at 

Publix Corporate Headquarters in 

Lakeland, Florida. She and her husband 

have two daughters — Haedyn, age 3, 

and Brightyn, age 1. 

Alicia Marie DeFago earned her BA 

degree in Communications from Florida 

Atlantic University. She majored in 

Media Studies with a Specialization in 

Journalism and a minor in Sociology. 

She is the co-owner of Erin Lynn Events 

Wedding Planning and is a Public Information 

Officer (PIO) for government 

agencies. 

Marissa DiPonio earned her BS degree 

from the University of Florida. She 

majored in Exercise and Sport Science 

with a concentration in fitness and wellness. 

She worked at a sports training 

and therapy clinic for 4 years before 

returning to graduate school to earn an 

MS degree in Special Education from 

the University of North Carolina in 

Charlotte. 

Ashley (Eaker) Vingiano earned her 

BS degree in Social Work from Florida 

Atlantic University. She and her husband, 

Chris, are the owners of Sal’s Italian 

Ristorante in Delray Beach. The couple 

have a three-year old son and are 

expecting a daughter in November. 

Dane Evans graduated from Florida 

State University with a BS degree in 

Business with a major in Real Estate. He 

works as a pilot for Net Jets Aviation, the 

leader in fractional jet ownership. He 

also serves as a life coach for individuals. 

Asa Hochhauser earned his BS degree 

in Business Management from the 

University of North Florida. He currently 

works as the Business Development 

Specialist at CSI Caregiver Services. He 

recently became engaged. 

Lani (Hodges) Gospavic earned her BA 

degree in Education at Lynn University. 

She was a second-grade teacher in Florida 

before moving to Plano, Texas, where 

she is now a full-time nanny. Lani was 

recently in charge of the ten-year class 

reunion at Pope. 

Nicole (Liantonio) Haddad attended 

Florida Atlantic University and the 

University of Central Florida. She earned 

her degree in Elementary Education, with 

an emphasis on English for Speakers of 

Other Languages. She is a stay-at-home 

mommy to her two-year old son, Lucas. 

Stephen Mrachek earned his BS degree 

in Civil Engineering with a concentration 

in Geotechnical Engineering from 

the University of Florida. He is now a 

Professional Engineer at Dunkelberger 

Engineering and Testing. He and his 

wife, Kimberly, live in Boynton Beach. 

Jackie Obeso, Esq. earned both a BA 

degree in Economics and a BA degree 

in Public Policy Studies from Duke 

University. She then graduated from 

the Fordham University School of Law 

in New York and presently works as an 

Attorney in International Tax for 

KPMG LLP in Philadelphia. A cross 

country runner in high school, she has 

completed both the New York City 

marathon and the Big Sur marathon. 

Monica Pigna, JD earned her BA degree 

in Business Administration from the 

University of Florida and her Juris 

Doctorate from the Shepard Broad Law 

Center at Nova Southeastern University. 

She currently works as a marital and 

family law attorney at West, Green & 

Associates, P.L. in Orlando, Florida. 

John Anthony Rahael is nearing completion 

of his PhD degree in Industrial 

Organizational Psychology at Central 

Michigan University. While pursuing 

his degree, he has taught undergraduate 

courses and was recently presented with 

the Outstanding Graduate Teaching 

Award. As part of his studies, he was 

able to travel around the world to visit 

different countries. He visited the Great 

Wall of China, went great white shark 

diving in South Africa, and volunteered 

at an orphanage in India. 


Ashley Rohwedder began her collegiate 

studies at Villanova University in 

Philadelphia before transferring to 

Florida Atlantic University. She later 

earned her BS degree in Business while 

majoring in Marketing at the University 

of Florida. She currently works as a 

Marketing Associate for Schafer Cullen 

Capital Management in New York City. 

Following a fall wedding, she and her 

husband, Frank, will honeymoon in 

Greece. 

Mariana Rodrigues earned her BA 

degree in Public Relations and Global 

Marketing Communications from 

Pennsylvania State University. She later 

earned an MA degree at Emerson 

College. Mariana now works in public 

relations for Fleishman-Hillard, the 

world’s largest communications firm, 

headquartered in New York City. 

Victoria Ross earned her BA degree in 

Interior Design from The Art Institute 

of Fort Lauderdale. She is presently selfemployed 

as the owner of a Kids' Gym 

called "A Barrel of Monkeys". Victoria 

is happily married. 

Elizabeth Serra earned her Interdisciplinary 

in Social Sciences degree from 

Florida State University. She is currently 

working as an Administrative Coordinator 

at the University of Florida Foundation. 

She is the parent of one son, 

Domenic William. 

Antonio M. Trillo, JD earned his BS 

degree in Accounting from the University 

of Florida. He later earned his Juris 

Doctorate degree from the School of 

Law at the University of Wisconsin. 

Tony now works as an attorney specializing 

in commercial litigation for Reinhart 

Boerner Van Deuren in Milwaukee.

Kristin Ungerland earned her BBA 

degree in Marketing and Management 

from the University of Miami. She also 

earned her MBA degree from Florida 

Atlantic University. Currently, she is 

a Senior Sales Specialist for Eli Lilly 

and Company, a leading pharmaceutical 

company. 

Andrea (Venezia) Whitworth earned 

her BS degree in Finance and Accounting 

from the University of Florida. She 

is a Certified Public Accountant and 

now works as the Accounting Manager, 

European Operations for Sunbeam 

Products, Inc. She is married to Pope 

alum, John I. Whitworth IV ’98. They 

have a son named John I. Whitworth V. 

Sal Vecchio earned his BS degree in 

Recording Arts at Full Sail University. 

He is currently self-employed as the 

CEO at Custom Electronics of South 

Florida, a home theater/low voltage company. 

He assisted on Eminem’s album, 

Encore. Sal is also a Pro Tools Instructor. 

Christina (Vigoa) Espino earned her 

BBA degree in Marketing and Human 

Resource Management from Florida 

Atlantic University. She later earned her 

MBA degree in International Business 

from FAU. In 2007, she married 

Dan Espino. Her best friend, Katherine 

Acosta ’00, and her sister, Vanessa 

Mendez ’05, were in the wedding party. 

Christina now works as the Human 

Resources and Internship Coordinator 

at NBC 6 and Telemundo 51 and is an 

avid volunteer for non-profit organizations 

in Miami Springs.

Jose Herrera attended Florida Atlantic 

University where he earned both a BA 

degree and an MS degree in Urban and 

Public Affairs. Since 2007, he has been 

employed by FAU as the Event Coordinator 

in University Advancement and 

Alumni Affairs. He returned to Pope 

in October to begin his new position 

as Director of Development and Alumni 

Relations.

CLASS OF 2002 

Kelly Bruno is a medical student at the 

University of North Carolina. This fall, 

she competed on the TV reality show, 

Survivor Nicaragua. An accomplished 

student-athlete during her years at Pope, 

Kelly still loves the thrill of competition. 

In 2007, she became the second 

and the fastest female amputee to finish 

the Ironman World Championships in 

Kona, Hawaii. 

CLASS OF 2006 

Kennedy Phillips earned a degree in 

Cinema Studies at the University of 

Central Florida. An aspiring film editor, 

he is now a graduate student pursuing a 

degree in Film Editing at Chapman 

University in Orange, California.

First of all, I want to thank you for your support and loyalty to Pope John 

Paul II High School. Last year, more than 300 donors responded to our 

request for assistance by providing a gift to the Annual Fund. Your generosity 

allowed us to surpass our $100,000 goal with gifts totaling $102,185. This 

year, we need even greater participation as our goal has been set at $125,000. 

Many of you already know that tuition alone does not fully cover the cost 

of a Pope education. The school must rely on fund-raising efforts like the 

Annual Fund to help bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the higher 

cost of educating each student. In effect, the tuition of every student at Pope 

is subsidized by the generosity of others. Remember, when you make a gift 

of support to the Annual Fund, you are really providing a silent scholarship 

that benefits every student, every day at Pope. 

As you reflect upon the many accomplishments showcased in this report, 

please give consideration to using the donor envelope inside to make a gift to the Annual Fund. If you prefer,
