hands <strong>MISUMI</strong> <strong>New</strong>s & Views – the very first issue<br />

<strong>of</strong> our customer magazine. This is the channel with<br />

which we will be informing you quarterly on interesting<br />

news from the sector: for instance, new developments<br />

in the market, new or changed statutory<br />

frameworks, or brand new product launches.<br />

The <strong>main</strong> report in each magazine will cover one<br />

<strong>of</strong> our customers in an informative user article – from the front line, for the<br />

front line. The first report <strong>of</strong> this kind in the inaugural issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>MISUMI</strong> <strong>New</strong>s<br />

& Views is VWH Vorrichtungs- und Werkzeugbau GmbH from the<br />

<strong>New</strong> Machinery Directive EU expands<br />

§<br />

The current EU Machinery Directive 98/37/EC will be<br />

replaced at the end <strong>of</strong> 2009 with the new Machinery<br />

Directive 2006/42/EC. The new version was published<br />

in the middle <strong>of</strong> last year. Member countries are currently<br />

incorporating the directive within their national<br />

legislation.<br />

The new regulations come into force on 29 December<br />

2009. The reforms include changes in the requirements<br />

laid down for machine modules or unfinished machines.<br />

Manufacturers in future will have to include an installation<br />

declaration along with the supplied goods stipulating which<br />

<strong>of</strong> the specifications in the directive apply to the machine<br />

modules and must therefore be complied with. The documents<br />

supplied with the machine must also include assembly<br />

instructions. The general Health & Safety stipulations in<br />

future also include a risk assessment from the manufacturer<br />

(pursuant to DIN EN ISO 12100). Other reforms concern<br />

stipulations on ergonomics, control<br />

and protective devices and<br />

equipment, as well as noise and<br />

vibration emissions. The conformity<br />

assessment procedure and<br />

the CE labelling <strong>of</strong> safety components<br />

are an integral part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

amended regulations.<br />

Thanks to the positive trend in 2006, the German mechanical<br />

engineering and plant engineering sectors set a new production<br />

record last year, according to the VDMA (German Mechanical and<br />

Plant Engineering Association), with an estimated turnover <strong>of</strong> € 158<br />

billion. Domestic orders have risen by double figures on average since<br />

November 2005: and with a rise <strong>of</strong> 19 per cent in the first seven<br />

months <strong>of</strong> 2006, they were well above the 15 per cent growth in international<br />

orders.<br />

The sixth expansion round <strong>of</strong> the EU saw Romania<br />

and Bulgaria incorporated within the <strong>Europe</strong>an Union<br />

at the beginning <strong>of</strong> the year. However, because these<br />

new countries still<br />

need to implement a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> reforms,<br />

their membership is<br />

still subject to a large<br />

number <strong>of</strong> reservations.<br />

The growth in the<br />

Romanian economy in<br />

recent years was attributable<br />

in part to the<br />

upswing in agriculture<br />

and construction, as well as the mechanical engineering<br />

and automotive industry. Bulgaria’s most important<br />

industrial sectors include metal, textiles and chemicals,<br />

as well as mechanical engineering and steel<br />

production. Slovenia became the first <strong>of</strong> the countries<br />

entering the EU in the 2004 expansion round to adopt<br />

the Euro: the Tolar is now part <strong>of</strong> the country’s history.<br />

More than half <strong>of</strong> the Slovenian workforce is<br />

employed in the service sector – particularly tourism.<br />

The automotive industry, along with its subcontractors,<br />

is also enjoying strong growth. The <strong>main</strong> production<br />

sectors are food, mechanical engineering and<br />

chemicals.<br />

Development <strong>of</strong> machine production<br />

With a further rise <strong>of</strong> two per cent forecast by the association for<br />

2007, the sector will be able to look forward to its fourth year <strong>of</strong><br />

growth in succession. The economy is also powering ahead in the<br />

German machine tool industry which enjoyed the third year <strong>of</strong> growth<br />

in succession in 2006. There is also good news on the employment<br />

side with a rise in the mechanical and plant engineering sector workforce<br />

<strong>of</strong> 11,000 year-on-year to 868,000 employees in June 2006.<br />

This is the first rise in employment in this sector for many years.<br />

injection mould tooling as well<br />

as special purpose machinery,<br />

such as semi and fully automated<br />

The relationship with<br />

advantages. Head <strong>of</strong> Design,<br />

Johannes Steudter points out<br />

that, “their product portfolio is<br />

much bigger than that <strong>of</strong> other<br />

vendors in Germany,” and, referring<br />

to product quality as well as<br />

product range, he goes on to<br />

say that, “50 % <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> our<br />

systems are based on <strong>MISUMI</strong><br />

components”. From his point <strong>of</strong><br />

view, getting components from<br />

a single source is very efficient<br />

because the workflow is optimized<br />

which saves time.<br />

VWH uses mechanical components from <strong>MISUMI</strong> to realise the housing assembly apparatus<br />

for automotive ventilation jets.


There are other time savings also. VWH used to produce some parts on<br />

their own:“Even for simple parts we had to create drawings, order raw materials,<br />

manufacture components, inspect, rework them if needed, and carry<br />

out surface treatments.This process took us up to four weeks. <strong>MISUMI</strong>’s delivery<br />

is significantly faster. Stock items are available in one to two days; others<br />

in six to eight days. Considering the permanent time pressure in our business,<br />

this is a major advantage,” says Steudter. It also has a dramatic effect<br />

on costs. For VWH, the costs for in-house produced parts can be as much<br />

as € 300 to 600 per piece. They can now order those components from<br />

<strong>MISUMI</strong> for just € 50 Euro<br />

<strong>MISUMI</strong>’s product range sets it miles apart from the conventional spectrum available in the German market.<br />

The reference book<br />

for mechanical designers<br />

To select the mechanical parts implemented in VWH machines, Johannes<br />

simplifies everyday tasks.” According to Steudter, the <strong>MISUMI</strong> <strong>catalogue</strong><br />

beats competitors in another area as well: it includes the prices and delivery<br />

times as well as volume discounts for each product – great for reliable planning!<br />

This is an important factor for VWH whose strategy is to support its customers<br />

by providing low-cost-manufacturing concepts.<br />

Precisely meeting<br />

the demands<br />

The very nature <strong>of</strong> special purpose or assembly machinery is a commercial<br />

challenge: the high number <strong>of</strong> different solutions does not support the<br />

design and manufacture <strong>of</strong> low cost and short time-to-market equipment.<br />

Unique machines are the rule rather than two or more identical systems. In<br />

addition to the need for the efficient and cost effective procurement <strong>of</strong><br />

mechanical components with fast delivery times, another headache is that<br />

some parts are only needed in very small volumes. The <strong>MISUMI</strong> concept<br />

resolves this by imposing no minimum order quantities or minimum order<br />

Only five minutes for a finished component<br />

The procedure behind the individual<br />

<strong>catalogue</strong> number for the selected article<br />

<strong>MISUMI</strong> provides a convincing service: modules and components<br />

as if you made them yourself – only cheaper and faster!<br />

Your individual order number consists <strong>of</strong> several different sections<br />

built up step by step from left to right when you define the desired product<br />

specifications.Variable parameters are highlighted in blue or green<br />

lettering (against a white background).<br />

The first thing you do is select the product code from the <strong>catalogue</strong><br />

section type. This consists <strong>of</strong> a combination <strong>of</strong> letters – e.g. SFAH – and<br />

makes up the first part <strong>of</strong> the order number. This basic code describes<br />

the material properties and surface treatment <strong>of</strong> the component. This is<br />

easy to find in the new <strong>catalogue</strong> via the <strong>catalogue</strong> number index (*see<br />

contents: index according to article numbers) on the last pages <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>catalogue</strong>. The rest <strong>of</strong> the number contains the component details<br />

specified by you such as length, diameter, thread<br />

dimensions etc. The details in the tables with the blue<br />

background contain technical specifications available<br />

to you as more detailed information when selecting<br />

and calculating your component: but they are not<br />

incorporated in the order number.<br />

The table reveals a price <strong>of</strong> Euro 18.60 for one piece, delivered free with-in<br />

Germany. In this case, <strong>MISUMI</strong> already grants a volume discount <strong>of</strong> five per<br />

cent when ordering two pieces. The discounts for each <strong>of</strong> the numerous<br />

products are shown in the table with the staggered discounts.<br />

Should you require a diameter tolerance <strong>of</strong> h5 instead <strong>of</strong> g6, you can use<br />

the optional “DKC” alteration, whereby you simply add “-DKC” to the original<br />

code. There is an additional cost <strong>of</strong> just 2 Euro per piece, so your final price would be just Euro 20.60. The unique <strong>MISUMI</strong> part coding system<br />

allows you to configure parts intuitively and the price <strong>of</strong> ordering machined components from <strong>MISUMI</strong> is always transparent.”<br />
