This is the channel with which we will be informing you quarterly on interesting news from the sector: for instance, new developments in the market, new or changed statutory frameworks, or brand new product launches. The main report in each magazine will cover one of our customers in an informative user article – from the front line, for the front line. The first report of this kind in the inaugural issue of MISUMI News & Views is VWH Vorrichtungs- und Werkzeugbau GmbH from the Westerwald in Rheinlandpfalz/Germany. New Machinery Directive EU expands § The current EU Machinery Directive 98/37/EC will be replaced at the end of 2009 with the new Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. The new version was published in the middle of last year. Member countries are currently incorporating the directive within their national legislation. The new regulations come into force on 29 December 2009. The reforms include changes in the requirements laid down for machine modules or unfinished machines. Manufacturers in future will have to include an installation declaration along with the supplied goods stipulating which of the specifications in the directive apply to the machine modules and must therefore be complied with. The documents supplied with the machine must also include assembly instructions. The general Health & Safety stipulations in future also include a risk assessment from the manufacturer (pursuant to DIN EN ISO 12100). Other reforms concern stipulations on ergonomics, control and protective devices and equipment, as well as noise and vibration emissions. The conformity assessment procedure and the CE labelling of safety components are an integral part of the amended regulations. Thanks to the positive trend in 2006, the German mechanical engineering and plant engineering sectors set a new production record last year, according to the VDMA (German Mechanical and Plant Engineering Association), with an estimated turnover of € 158 billion. Domestic orders have risen by double figures on average since November 2005: and with a rise of 19 per cent in the first seven months of 2006, they were well above the 15 per cent growth in international orders. ! Mechanical engineering Strongest growth phase for 25 years Branchen-News The sixth expansion round of the EU saw Romania and Bulgaria incorporated within the European Union at the beginning of the year. However, because these new countries still need to implement a number of reforms, their membership is still subject to a large number of reservations. The growth in the Romanian economy in recent years was attributable in part to the upswing in agriculture and construction, as well as the mechanical engineering and automotive industry. Bulgaria’s most important industrial sectors include metal, textiles and chemicals, as well as mechanical engineering and steel production. Slovenia became the first of the countries entering the EU in the 2004 expansion round to adopt the Euro: the Tolar is now part of the country’s history. More than half of the Slovenian workforce is employed in the service sector – particularly tourism. The automotive industry, along with its subcontractors, is also enjoying strong growth. The main production sectors are food, mechanical engineering and chemicals. Development of machine production With a further rise of two per cent forecast by the association for 2007, the sector will be able to look forward to its fourth year of growth in succession. The economy is also powering ahead in the German machine tool industry which enjoyed the third year of growth in succession in 2006. There is also good news on the employment side with a rise in the mechanical and plant engineering sector workforce of 11,000 year-on-year to 868,000 employees in June 2006. This is the first rise in employment in this sector for many years. 03
