Dear Readers,
New year, new service: You are holding in your
hands MISUMI News & Views – the very first issue
of our customer magazine. This is the channel with
which we will be informing you quarterly on interesting
news from the sector: for instance, new developments
in the market, new or changed statutory
frameworks, or brand new product launches.
The main report in each magazine will cover one
of our customers in an informative user article – from the front line, for the
front line. The first report of this kind in the inaugural issue of MISUMI News
& Views is VWH Vorrichtungs- und Werkzeugbau GmbH from the
Westerwald in Rheinlandpfalz/Germany. If you are interested in seeing your
own company presented in a report of this kind, then please contact us any
time – we will handle the rest!!
There will naturally also be articles about ongoing topics of interest within
MISUMI itself, such as information on new products and services, and
the dates and venues of our roadshows – which we launched for the first
time at the end of January. The MISUMI Inside section of this magazine contains
more details about these and other matters. This section is also a
showcase for “MISUMI faces” where we introduce you to MISUMI people
and their areas of responsibility – because the personal touch makes all the
difference. Our engineers also have their “special corner” for explaining product
details, as well as different models in our product lines, mechanisms
or applications for our big range of components. And if you are interested in
any other specific issues, please contact us any time – this is a “living”
magazine and we are very interested in incorporating your ideas and concepts!
Enjoy reading, until the next issue I remain,
Yours faithfully,
New Machinery Directive EU expands
§
The current EU Machinery Directive 98/37/EC will be
replaced at the end of 2009 with the new Machinery
Directive 2006/42/EC. The new version was published
in the middle of last year. Member countries are currently
incorporating the directive within their national
legislation.
The new regulations come into force on 29 December
2009. The reforms include changes in the requirements
laid down for machine modules or unfinished machines.
Manufacturers in future will have to include an installation
declaration along with the supplied goods stipulating which
of the specifications in the directive apply to the machine
modules and must therefore be complied with. The documents
supplied with the machine must also include assembly
instructions. The general Health & Safety stipulations in
future also include a risk assessment from the manufacturer
(pursuant to DIN EN ISO 12100). Other reforms concern
stipulations on ergonomics, control
and protective devices and
equipment, as well as noise and
vibration emissions. The conformity
assessment procedure and
the CE labelling of safety components
are an integral part of the
amended regulations.
We will be happy to send you the full
wording of the Machinery Directive
2006/42/EC by e-mail as a PDF file
(63-page EU Amtsblatt, 1.4 MB).
Simply send us a brief request to:
Thanks to the positive trend in 2006, the German mechanical
engineering and plant engineering sectors set a new production
record last year, according to the VDMA (German Mechanical and
Plant Engineering Association), with an estimated turnover of € 158
billion. Domestic orders have risen by double figures on average since
November 2005: and with a rise of 19 per cent in the first seven
months of 2006, they were well above the 15 per cent growth in international
orders.
!
Mechanical engineering
Strongest growth
phase for 25 years
Branchen-News
The sixth expansion round of the EU saw Romania
and Bulgaria incorporated within the European Union
at the beginning of the year. However, because these
new countries still
need to implement a
number of reforms,
their membership is
still subject to a large
number of reservations.
The growth in the
Romanian economy in
recent years was attributable
in part to the
upswing in agriculture
and construction, as well as the mechanical engineering
and automotive industry. Bulgaria’s most important
industrial sectors include metal, textiles and chemicals,
as well as mechanical engineering and steel
production. Slovenia became the first of the countries
entering the EU in the 2004 expansion round to adopt
the Euro: the Tolar is now part of the country’s history.
More than half of the Slovenian workforce is
employed in the service sector – particularly tourism.
The automotive industry, along with its subcontractors,
is also enjoying strong growth. The main production
sectors are food, mechanical engineering and
chemicals.
Development of machine production
With a further rise of two per cent forecast by the association for
2007, the sector will be able to look forward to its fourth year of
growth in succession. The economy is also powering ahead in the
German machine tool industry which enjoyed the third year of growth
in succession in 2006. There is also good news on the employment
side with a rise in the mechanical and plant engineering sector workforce
of 11,000 year-on-year to 868,000 employees in June 2006.
This is the first rise in employment in this sector for many years.
Mobilising machine parts
VWH Vorrichtungs- und Werkzeugbau
Herschbach GmbH,
located in Herschbach,
Germany, specializes in the
design and manufacture of
injection mould tooling as well
as special purpose machinery,
such as semi and fully automated
systems and assembly and
testing systems. A wide range
of mechanical components are
used in VWH systems, and a
significant number are supplied
by MISUMI.
The medium sized company,
located between
Cologne and Frankfurt, boasts
40 years of experience in
machine building, with a
major focus on the automotive
industry. Their product portfolio
includes assembly equipment
for airbag systems, car
entry systems, leak testing
systems and fuel systems. In
addition, other customers
from the domestic appliances
or telecommunications industries
count on the all-in-one
supplier from Herschbach.
VWH offers a one-stop-shop
for all services from R&D and
manufacturing, to installation,
and the start of production
and final acceptance.
Efficiency produces
competitive advantages
An efficient team of
mechanical and electrical designers,
assemblers, and engineers
work closely together in
product development and production.
Having strong vertical integration
with all the necessary
machining operations ensures
fast and flexible workflows.
This is one important advantage
over the competition. To
Assembly system for locking systems: Using a system supplier considerably reduces the
development and design process for complex machines.
continuously maintain and utilize
these advantages, VWH
demands the same high level
of flexibility, cost effectiveness,
and short delivery times from
its suppliers and partners. This
was why VWH chose MISUMI
Europa GmbH, located in
Schwalbach/ Ts., Germany, to
source its components.
Given that MISUMI’s
Factory Automation catalogue
contains over 60,000 items,
arranged under 30 different
categories, VWH estimate that
they can source 70 % of their
requirements directly from this
one source.
Almost impossible to
produce in-house
The relationship with
MISUMI offers VWH a variety of
advantages. Head of Design,
Johannes Steudter points out
that, “their product portfolio is
much bigger than that of other
vendors in Germany,” and, referring
to product quality as well as
product range, he goes on to
say that, “50 % of some of our
systems are based on MISUMI
components”. From his point of
view, getting components from
a single source is very efficient
because the workflow is optimized
which saves time.
VWH uses mechanical components from MISUMI to realise the housing assembly apparatus
for automotive ventilation jets.

There are other time savings also. VWH used to produce some parts on
their own:“Even for simple parts we had to create drawings, order raw materials,
manufacture components, inspect, rework them if needed, and carry
out surface treatments. This process took us up to four weeks. MISUMI’s delivery
is significantly faster. Stock items are available in one to two days; others
in six to eight days. Considering the permanent time pressure in our business,
this is a major advantage,” says Steudter. It also has a dramatic effect
on costs. For VWH, the costs for in-house produced parts can be as much
as € 300 to 600 per piece. They can now order those components from
MISUMI for just € 50 Euro
MISUMI’s product range sets it miles apart from the conventional spectrum available in the German market.
The reference book
for mechanical designers
To select the mechanical parts implemented in VWH machines, Johannes
Steudter uses the comprehensive MISUMI catalogue: “The catalogue really
simplifies everyday tasks.” According to Steudter, the MISUMI catalogue
beats competitors in another area as well: it includes the prices and delivery
times as well as volume discounts for each product – great for reliable planning!
This is an important factor for VWH whose strategy is to support its customers
by providing low-cost-manufacturing concepts.
Precisely meeting
the demands
The very nature of special purpose or assembly machinery is a commercial
challenge: the high number of different solutions does not support the
design and manufacture of low cost and short time-to-market equipment.
Unique machines are the rule rather than two or more identical systems. In
addition to the need for the efficient and cost effective procurement of
mechanical components with fast delivery times, another headache is that
some parts are only needed in very small volumes. The MISUMI concept
resolves this by imposing no minimum order quantities or minimum order
values.
Rapid Prototyping
Helpful reference book for
designers and mechanical
engineers: Rapid Prototyping
– Tools for Rapid
Product Development.
This book deals with the
general principles of
rapid prototyping technology
and goes on to describe
the properties and
special characteristics of
the industrially available
machines (prototypers).
Expertise
Rapid prototyping is a technology which has now
become indispensable for product developers
because it opens up new previously unimaginable
possibilities. Published by the Hanser-Fachverlag,
this reference book covers the whole process chain
in a very practice-oriented way – starting with data
generation, and finishing with mould production. The
book focuses in particular on the following rapid prototyping
methods:
• Stereolithography,
• Laser sintering
• Layered laminate methods,
• Extrusion methods
• 3D-Printing
These methods are dealt with separately from conventional
machining methods. A special chapter is
dedicated to rapid tooling – tool making with generative
methods. This is rounded off with a discussion
of hybrid methods and the future of rapid prototyping
techniques.
Take part in our picture quiz on the
attached fax reply form and win a copy
of the Rapid Prototyping book!
The various applications of rapid prototyping are illustrated
by numerous examples from industrial product
development, the simulation of calculation
methods, and the fields of medicine, art, archaeology
and architecture. The economic side is discussed
from a strategic and operative point of view.
In the next issue we will introduce you to the MISUMI UK Customer Service Team.

Only five minutes for a finished component
The procedure behind the individual
catalogue number for the selected article
MISUMI provides a convincing service: modules and components
as if you made them yourself – only cheaper and faster!
Your individual order number consists of several different sections
built up step by step from left to right when you define the desired product
specifications.Variable parameters are highlighted in blue or green
lettering (against a white background).
The first thing you do is select the product code from the catalogue
section type. This consists of a combination of letters – e.g. SFAH – and
makes up the first part of the order number. This basic code describes
the material properties and surface treatment of the component. This is
easy to find in the new catalogue via the catalogue number index (*see
contents: index according to article numbers) on the last pages of the
catalogue. The rest of the number contains the component details
specified by you such as length, diameter, thread
dimensions etc. The details in the tables with the blue
background contain technical specifications available
to you as more detailed information when selecting
and calculating your component: but they are not
incorporated in the order number.
This is how it works:
The following example demonstrates the fast and
simple generation of an individual order code for an
induction-hardened, polished steel shaft for linear
movements with steps and female threads on both
ends on the basis of the separate catalogue details
(the product is on page 121 in the 2007 version of
the catalogue):
SFAH12-121-F24-P10-M6-T30…(DKC, LKC, SC, WSC)
2. External diameter
5. Diameter step
3. Selectable length in millimeter steps
Optional customizations
7. Length of step (in the drawing
right-hand side)
6.Nominal diameter of the female thread
4. Length of step (in the drawing left-hand side)
1. Product code – specified shape and tolerance ( g6 / f8)
Material
Heat treatment (hardness)
Surface
Calculating the costs
So what does an induction-hardened, polished shaft of type SFAH with a
total length of 175 mm, Ø 12g6, stepped at both ends Ø 10 and with two
female threads M6 cost?
The table reveals a price of Euro 18.60 for one piece, delivered free with-in
Germany. In this case, MISUMI already grants a volume discount of five per
cent when ordering two pieces. The discounts for each of the numerous
products are shown in the table with the staggered discounts.
Should you require a diameter tolerance of h5 instead of g6, you can use
the optional “DKC” alteration, whereby you simply add “-DKC” to the original
code. There is an additional cost of just 2 Euro per piece, so your final price would be just Euro 20.60. The unique MISUMI part coding system
allows you to configure parts intuitively and the price of ordering machined components from MISUMI is always transparent.”
Prices per item and volume discounts are shown in the tables in the catalogue with the yellow backgrounds
– fast and guaranteed. And worth remembering: MISUMI does not add any surcharges for
small volumes and no delivery costs (within Germany).
