Time Trials
Time Trials
Course Description
All time trials will be conducted on Friday 11 January 2013,
based at Lincoln University on Ellesmere Junction Road (see
course map for details). Time trials will be run in the order:
Elite Women – 25km
Under 23 Men – 40km
Elite Men – 40km
Riders will start at two minute intervals, with a short break
between grades and distance changes, starting at 10.00am.
The time trial course is predominantly flat, straight and fast,
although as it flanks the shores of Lake Ellesmere for most of the
route, it can be exposed to winds from most directions.
The course starts and finishes on Ellesmere Junction Road, at
the Lincoln Childcare and Pre-School Centre, utilising a starting
ramp, and heads out 2.7km to a left turn onto Leeston Road at
Springston. Team Cars will be parked in the Lincoln Golf Driving
Range car park, within metres of the starting ramp and can
clearly see their riders starting to move out in support.
From here it is a straight run out to 9.6km before crossing the
Selwyn River Bridge and continuing on Leeston Road to the turn
around points.
800 metres after passing Selwyn Lake Road, as we approach
the outskirts of Irwell, we reach the Elite Women’s turn
around point at 12.5km. The return leg takes you back on the
same route, turning right at Springston back on to Ellesmere
Junction Road at 22.2km. The finish line will be opposite the
start line at 25km.
Meanwhile the Under 23 Men and Elite Men continue on Leeston
Road through Irwell (13.7km) and Doylston (17.2km) to their
turn at Leeston. As you approach the outskirts of Leeston the
unmistakable War Memorial is clearly visible straight ahead.
This landmark forms a large central traffic island on Leeston
High Street and creates a fast and safe turnaround point at just
a few metres over the 20km mark.
The return leg follows the outbound leg, passing Doyleston
at 23km, Irwell at 26km, crossing the Selwyn River Bridge
at 30.4km and turning right back onto Ellesmere Junction
road at 37.3km. Again the finish line is opposite the start line,
measuring out at 40.1km.
In 2010 we saw the Under 23 record fall, but in 2011 we saw
both the Elite Men and Under 23 NZ records fall to below the
Sub 50 Min mark for the first time in New Zealand’s history.
