From the Commodore 

The 2011/12 year has seen continued positive 

developments within the club. The permanent 

sailing membership remains well subscribed and 

the day-pass system has now been well accepted 

amongst members and guests. Continued 

monitoring and cultural change is needed however. 

In an effort to increase engagement in club 

activities from young sailors between the ages of 

18 and 35, we have re-structured the former 

intermediate membership category into a “Young 

Senior” membership, offering senior membership 

privileges at reduced fees up to the age of 35. 

With the appointment of our full time chef Anthony 

Dole, we have been able to ensure that food 

service and quality has improved considerably, 

resulting in better than expected financial results in 

the house as well as a much improved club 

atmosphere, particularly on Wednesday Twilight 

nights. The recent appointment of Helen Pell in a 

permanent position has also improved the 

consistency of service quality in the dining room. 

The Royals members have once again produced 

strong racing results in various events including the 

Sydney-Hobart, Melbourne-Hobart and Melbourne- 

Launceston. The Association Cup was retained 

and various prizes were collected in the Range 

Series as well as Geelong Week. The Lipton Cup 

entries were over 100 again, a development which 

is encouraging. Planning is underway to host the 

2015 ISDF World Championships, a qualifier for 

the 2016 Olympics. 

The platform lift to replace the slipway has been in 

a planning stage for over 12 months, but we expect 

to be in a position to fully update the membership 

at the AGM in August. A re-structure in marina and 

hardstand fees has been completed, resulting in a 

more equitable approach, including charges for 

those who regularly use electricity. 

The Royals Training Centre had a period of 

reduced attendance, but since the appointment of 

Ian Fox earlier this year, we have seen a gradual 

increase in patronage again. Cadets and off the 

beach continue to see an ongoing increase in 

participation. Results at major events are improving 

again and all junior competitors had a great night 

celebrating their achievements during the 

extremely well attended junior presentation night. 

The marina expansion project has received 

approval from Parks Victoria on the footprint. We 

are now negotiating the seabed lease applicable to 

the area we will occupy following the expansion. 

From an administration perspective, we completed 

the implementation of our new financial system 

which now has yard and bar charges directly 

integrated to the accounts. New functionality such 

as member self-service for accounts and 

membership data will be implemented in the next 

few months. Online entry is being reviewed with an 

intent to provide an improved system with 

simplified administration as soon as possible. 

I would like to thank the General Manager Alex 

McGillivray and his staff for all their hard work this 

year as well as all our club’s volunteers on and off 

the water without whom we would not be able to 

operate.

Another successful summer sailing season was 

recently concluded and there were many 

noteworthy performances by Club boats in a wide 

variety of events. Living Doll achieved a first place 

overall in the Audi Sydney to Southport race and 

second place in the Rolex Sydney to Hobart race. 

In what proved to be a race suiting the bigger boats 

Chutzpah and Cadibarra 8 spent many hours in 

view of Tasman Island in a windless hole as the 

clock ticked away and with it their chances in this 

epic race. The races from Melbourne to Tasmania 

also saw impressive results from Déjà Vu who took 

out all three-result categories in the Melbourne to 

Launceston and Alien who took out AMS and PHD 

honours in the West Coaster. Alien followed up 

their win with a family cruise around southwest 

Tasmania on their return trip to Melbourne. 

The 2011 Melbourne to Hobart Westcoaster was 

particularly significant by reason of two special 

anniversaries. It marked the fortieth edition of this 

iconic race and it also marked the thirtieth 

consecutive entry by Club member Robin Hewitt 

and his legendary Miller and Whitworth designed 

yacht Yoko. Congratulations Robin on making such 

a fine contribution to offshore sailing over so many 

years. 

As an alternative to the annual ocean races the 

Club ran a cruise between Christmas and New 

Year. Six boats met at Queenscliff on December 

27th with four boats following the ocean racing fleet 

out through the Heads on a “mystery tour” of 

Westernport with overnight stops at Flinders, 

French Island and Rhyll before returning to 

Queenscliff on the 30th. The event was very well 

received and this year’s event is recommended for 

anyone looking for a relaxed cruise in company 

with other Club members. I am particularly pleased 

to see families such as the Allard’s and the 

Lindeman’s using this event as an opportunity to 

enjoy their boats with their children. 

The popular Geelong Regatta was re-named “The 

Festival of Sails” and the Club came away with 

deserved winners in the Sydney 38’s – Chutzpah 

38, AMS Division 1 – Swordfish Trombone, PHD 

Division 1 – Kookaburra, AMS Division 2 – 

Toecutter, Cruising Division 1 – Galaxy, Cruising 

Division 2 – Salty Dog, Cruising Division 3 – 

Millennium Falcon, Classic Yachts – Martini and 

the IRC teams trophy (with assistance from Bruce 

McCracken’s Ikon from HBYC). 

The Club Marine Series remains a well-supported 

Saturday summer series and Swordfish Trombone 

took out AMS in Division 1. Toecutter was a 

decisive winner in AMS Division 2 as was Penfold 

Audi Sport in IRC Division 2. The quality of the 

racing, particularly in Division 2, makes this series

quite unique certainly in Australia if not well 

beyond these shores. 

The Lipton Cup Regatta saw the addition of an off 

the beach event run by Williamstown Sailing Club. 

This will assist us to develop a bond with one of 

our neighbouring Clubs as well as build a bridge 

between dinghy and keelboat sailors and will 

continue in this year’s event. The Victorian State 

IRC and AMS championships were held in 

conjunction with the Lipton Cup and 

congratulations go to Toecutter and Penfold Audi 

Sport for becoming 2011/12 State Champions. To 

add to their trophy cabinet the Penfold Audi Sport 

team trucked their boat to Sydney for the Sydney 

Harbour Regatta and returned with a win in IRC 

Division 3 against strong local competition and 

took out a 3rd place on IRC in the Launceston to 

Hobart race. 

The Association Cup was re-formatted to include 

only one three boat team in IRC and one three 

boat team in AMS. Surprise, Executive Decision 

and Top Gun were the winning team in the IRC 

division and Chutzpah 38, Swordfish Trombone 

and Toecutter finishing second behind 

Sandringham in AMS, however, the overall team 

score was sufficient to retain the trophy. 

The Club continues to enjoy a reputation for 

providing excellent race management and in 

addition to running our own Club events David 

LeRoy and his team have been busy running Sail 

Melbourne World Cup racing and the two IRC 

Divisions at the Festival of Sails. David also 

attended the ISAF World Sailing Championships in 

Perth and assisted on one of the course boats. 

Congratulations on doing such a great job and 

generally setting the standard here on Port Phillip. 

Looking forward to the coming summer we will be 

changing the events that make up our long 

distance trophy, the Livingstone Trophy, to include 

the two Peter Taylor events run by Sandringham 

and Royal Brighton, the short version of HBYC’s 

Sea Pilots race as well as our own Palliser Trophy. 

This will ensure a good mix of events and ones 

that I am sure that our Club members will enjoy as 

an alternative to the windward/leeward races that 

predominate in the Club Marine Series. 

The Sailing Committee is also considering a short 

autumn series for 2013 as an alternative to the 

winter series currently being conducted by other 

Clubs and will be polling owners to gauge 

enthusiasm for the concept. 

So whatever your sailing aspirations the Club is 

offering a great range of events to suit. In closing, I 

would like to wish Club members every success 

for the coming season.

Sail Training and Development 

It has been a challenging year for Sail Training and 

Development with the departure mid-year of Gavin 

Wall to Yachting Victoria, I would like to extend the 

clubs thanks to Gavin for his efforts over the 

previous 2 years in establish the training centre and 

getting a number of key initiatives off the ground, 

probably the key one being the Tackers Program. 

We were fortunate to attract Ian Fox across from 

Yachting Victoria to fill Gavin’s shoes which he has 

done admirably. Ian has a long history with Yachting 

Victoria in running programs across the state in 

sailing and power boat handling, he is very adept at 

helping potential customers raise funds for training 

course and we look forward to him honing those 

skills at the club. 

Financial the Training Centre finished about $20,000 

behind budget due in a major part to the lack of 

Keelboat training course uptake. I also believe there 

was some down time from a marketing and business 

development perspective with Gavin on the move. 

We are continuing to look at ways of increasing 

revenue and broadening the courses offered to 

attract the adult sailor. We have currently advertised 

a match raining course and keelboat coaching

aggregate series for the Cadets. There was a very 

big presentation night held for the off the beach that 

is probably the biggest event we hold at the club 

each year except for Open Day. 

Our senior off the beach sailors have been very 

active with the number of lasers around the club 

multiplying and some very keen keelboat racers 

getting their feet and other thing wet on Sunday. 

There is even a rumour that our Race Officer was 

seen suited up on one occasion. As the weather 

warms we expect to see a fleet of 30 or so boats 

racing regularly on Sundays. 

The key piece of infrastructure under way is some 

additional dinghy storage space with a plan to 

accommodate up to 24 boats in a three level storage 

facility in the Cadet Area and Eastern Hardstand. 

I would like to thank the committee members, Pete 

Roberts, David Ellis, David Johnson, Justin Brennan 

and Ian Fox for their hard work and attendance over 

the past year. With the up and coming changes 

around the Flagg Officers, 

Michael McLean will be taking 

over the chair of the committee 

and I wish him the best in his

Membership Sub-Committee 

Over the past 12 months the Club’s Membership 

Committee has continued to work hard to grow our 

membership base. 

Our strategy has four dimensions: 

1. to rationalise and reform our membership 

structure 

2. to improve the membership offering 

3. to improve our marketing and 

communication and, 

4. compliance 

Members have been very supportive of these 

reforms and the results have been encouraging. 

From a situation where our membership was in 

steady decline we are now enjoying more 

sustainable membership levels. 

Over the year we recruited 76 new members while 

losing 86 members to resignation/strike offs etc. for 

a total membership of 900 (compared to 910 as at 

the start of the year) 

Our focus has been to recruit and retain members 

by; 

� encouraging a changed culture among 

skippers to ensure crew are signed up 

� regular member communications regarding 

the value of membership, various 

membership options and the Club’s 

requirements 

� try sailing promotions during January and 

February 

� a membership audit and compliance test 

during the season 

� modernising our membership structures 

(family, young senior, sailing etc.) 

Membership is the lifeblood of our Club-your 

continuing support and promotion of the Club is 

greatly appreciated.

It is with regret that the Club records the deaths of Mr. William Richards, Mr. Tony Vautin and Mr. Kevin 

Hinrichsen. 

During the Club’s financial year there were 76 candidates interviewed with those being elected comprising 

of 17 Seniors, 3 Family, 23 Sailing, 1 Absentee and 5 Associates 

Off The Beach (OTB) 

In 2011/12, we’ve regularly had a fleet of around 14 

boats, which is similar to the previous season. 

Several experienced sailors retired at the end of the 

previous season which has made way for some 

new competitors. There are a few good boats for 

sale, and there will be skippers looking for crew so 

please contact David Johnson if you’re interested in 

getting a ride on a Cadet!

were recognised at the recent YV awards as this 

program was awarded “Coaching Program of the 

Year”. His new initiative of ‘Fast Track’ increased 

the number of hours on the water for several 

competitors and improvements have clearly been 

made. All this work will help to prepare the sailors 

for the National and World championships in Hobart 

from Dec 2012. I am very pleased that Gavin is 

able to continue in this role into the 2012/13 

season, at least until the end of this year.

Thanks to Jacqui Prestedge and William Orr for 

being the first ever Junior OTB Captains. This role 

is still being defined and I’m sure will increase in 

scope over the coming seasons. This year, the 

Junior OTB Captains are Lucy Fowler and Harrison 

Croft. I’d like to thank all the candidates who 

agreed to be part of the election process.. 

The 2011/12 Nationals were held at the Belmont 

16’ Sailing Club on Lake Macquarie in NSW and 

again there was a strong Royals contingent, with 

10 boats competing in the field of 60. 

Progress on redevelopment of the facilities for OTB 

Sailing at Royals has again not progressed very 

much over the last year. I hope that Members will 

consider this project to be of high priority since we 

are trying to attract several high profile world 

events to the Club, and desperately need to 

improve our infrastructure. 

After a large number of retirements last season, 

this year Jack Fowler, Jacqui Prestedge and Pippi 

Miller are also moving out of Cadets. All of these 

great sailors will continue in the rapidly growing 

Senior OTB fleet next year. I thank them for their 

contributions over many years. 

I know I say this every year, but I’d like to thank all 

the parents who helped out running the cadets

throughout the season. Without parents 

involvement, we simply couldn’t run the series. I 

can’t mention everyone but I want to especially 

thank those who are there regularly. We need at 

least 6 people on the water to run a race so extra 

hands are always welcome. 

Naomi Wilbraham & Fiona Prestedge again have 

done a magnificent job with the canteen and would 

like to thank all the others who helped during the 

year. If you can help out for a few hours now and 

again, please speak to Naomi because (like so 

many things) – a few extra hands makes 

everything so much easier.

Results 

This year, two boats tussled for the top honours in 

a very closely contested season. Overall Club 

Aggregate went to Harrison and James in Hold On. 

They also won the Commodore’s Trophy and Harry 

picked up the Malcolm Anderson for Best First 

Year Skipper. 

Second in the Club Aggregate and winner of the 

Club Championships was Louis and Max in 

Sidewinder. They also won the Jan Trophy and 

Max was best in the Arch Cawthorne Crews Race 

series. Sidewinder also performed well at the 

Nationals, and were second best Royals boat in 

21 st place. 

Will and Tom had a solid year in Need for Speed. 

They made a huge improvement from the previous 

season to finish third in the Club Aggregate and will 

continue to improve. 

Sailmaker has moved up from last year, with Ben 

and Nikki taking fourth overall. They are still 

working on their consistency but still managed to 

get a few runs on the board. 

Jacqui and Callum G have also moved Mustang 

Sally up the rankings. They were the best placed 

2 nd division boat, and Jacqui has shown that she 

can do well in light airs (despite previously 

declaring this to be a major problem). Jacqui wins 

the Djemma Trophy for being best placed girl 

skipper. Callum thoroughly deserved the Phil Miller 

Award for Most Tenacious Crew 

Clarebuoyant was a new arrival this year, and 

Clare and Phoebe were also a first year 

combination. A great result overall for the year, 

which was capped by winning the Smart Trophy. 

These girls were also given the Coach’s award for 

both good results and great diligence in the 

coaching sessions. 

This year, Bridgewick Farm had a new skipper, 

with Lucy taking her first year at the helm, crewed 

by Wynn. These two improved steadily, taking 

second place in the Aoma Handicap Trophy and 

also winning the Walker Warner for Most 

Tenacious Boat. 

Stealth would have been a lot higher in the overall 

rankings, but Jack and Ryan Cr only sailed for the 

first half of the season, with Jack finishing off his 

cadet career at the Nationals. In the first half of the 

season, they won the Sheeba and Hillenaar 

Trophies. They had a great tussle with Sidewinder 

in the Nationals and finished in 23 rd overall. 

Pippi and Kashan competed regularly during the 

season, but searched a bit for consistency in King 

George. I am looking forward to seeing Pippi’s 

progress in a Laser 4.7 next year in Senior OTB. 

Bullant was sailed by Mike and Eamon this year. 

Continuing improvement was rewarded by winning 

the Aoma Handicap Trophy. They also sailed 

extremely well in the Club Championships to finish 

4 th overall – which was enough to get them the 

Digby Trophy for best 2 nd division boat in that 

series. 

David has inherited Foxy Lady from his brother this 

year, and he and Luke showed improvement 

throughout the year. We will see further 

improvement to come from this boat. 

Ryan Ca and Hamish Lee have been learning their 

craft in Xciten, another new boat to the club this 

season. Before Hamish arrived, Ryan and Callum 

P took turns sailing with each other in the first half 

of the season. Ryan also crewed on Sailmaker in 

the Nationals. This year, votes for the Mothers’ 

Encouragement award could not be split, and these 

lads shared this award with Consecutive. 

Callum P took over the helm of Manxman this year, 

and was taking turns with Ryan Ca up until mid 

season. After the Nationals, Ryan Cr came into 

this boat and together showed a lot of promise, 

especially when Ryan Cr took 2 nd in the Arch 

Cawthorne. Callum P crewed in this boat at the 

Nationals (more on that in a moment….) 

Patrick and Ned have brought Consecutive back to 

Royals. They are still on the learning curve, and 

Patrick crewed on Clarebuoyant at the Nationals. 

They share the Mothers’ Encouragement award 

with Xciten. 

Graffiti was sailed for the second half of the season 

by Josh and Ryan Z. I don’t think Josh was 

expecting to be a skipper in his first year in cadets, 

but he’s doing a great job. 

Finally, Brodie made a cameo appearance in 

cadets this year. He and Callum P took Maxman to 

the Nationals and finished 18 th overall. They won 

The Cup as Best Royals Boat at the Nationals. 

Brodie has also been a regular competitor in his 

Laser 4.7 in Senior OTB.

Development and Marina Task Force 

Marina Task Force 

Our planning and approvals process for the new 

marina has progressed, albeit slowly, during the 

past year. 

The Marina Task Force, chaired by General 

Manager Alex McGillivray, has received approval of 

the location of the ‘foot print’ for our new marina 

and this area has now been formally surveyed. It 

will include an area on its eastern side, adjacent to 

the sea plane base, for the Club to place pontoons 

for use by our off the beach sailors. Depending on 

the final layout and boat lengths accommodated, 

the new marina will result in a 50% increase in the 

capacity of wet berthing. 

Following the approval of the ‘foot print’ we have 

commenced discussions regarding the lease for 

the marina sea bed – we currently occupy our 

current marina by annual licence. Parks has 

advised that it wishes to finalise a new lease 

covering both the sea bed and the club house/hard 

stand land. We are requesting a lease term of sixty 

-five years for which Parliamentary approval is 

required. The anticipated completion of this 

process is May next year. 

The Marina Task Force is chaired by our General 

Manager Alex McGillivray and the other members 

are VC Andrew Munro, RC David Seaman, David 

Sterrett, Alex Campbell, Claire Fazakerley and me, 

with co-opted assistance from Michael McLean, 

Hans Nieuwland and PC Ray Borrett. Thank you to 

everyone for your time and extremely valuable 

assistance.

Planning for the proposed upgrade of the club 

house has progressed and plans prepared by Mr 

Peter McIntyre, our Honorary Architect, have been 

on display in the dining room for the past few

months. A presentation of possible soft furnishing 

options was also made to the General Committee 

by Maree Howley, an Interior Designer. 

The Development Committee has prepared a ‘mud 

map’ of the location and development of facilities 

on the Club site, other than the marina. This was 

presented at the last half yearly general meeting. 

Whilst it has not resulted in any significant changes 

to the location of facilities, it has confirmed the 

current utilisation of the site as functionally 

appropriate with one or two relatively minor 

exceptions. Therefore future planning can be 

focussed on the upgrade of existing facilities rather 

than embarking on a major relocation program. 

Facilities such as the mast repair area will most 

likely be relocated in the future and the provision of 

additional lockers will most likely occur in a second 

or separate location. 

Otherwise, the vision for the ‘mud map’ is for an 

enlarged two or three storey club house in its 

current location which will include multi-purpose 

areas for training and meetings. There is a strong 

feeling that our club house must retain a strong 

club atmosphere. The car park may be expanded 

by adding a second level or deck and there are 

several ideas being considered for improvements 

to the hard stand, including, in particular the 

feasibility of a ship lift to replace the now decommissioned 

slip. 

Clearly, the key to the future of our Club is the 

replacement and expansion of the marina and the 

financial benefits that ensue. 

This has been my second year as Chair of the 

Development Committee. Again it has been 

particularly rewarding working with the committee 

which comprises VC Andrew Munro, RC David 

Seaman, PC Peter Bedggood, PC Mike Smith, 

Tony Baxter, who joined earlier this year and our 

General Manager Alex McGillivray. My thanks for 

your great support and dedication.

House and Social 

With the help from a wonderful House and Social 

Committee, we are gaining momentum in bringing 

together all aspects of the house and social to put 

more life and soul into the club. 

I’m sure by now everyone has sampled the 

wonderful food produced by Anthony Dole, our 

master chef. We are very thankful for his hard work, 

and for giving us a great reason to eat at the club. 

There have been some changes with staffing at the 

club, with the appointment of Helen Pelns as a full 

time Function Manager, and Glen Smith as House 

Manager. They’ve been working hard to keep the 

club running smoothly, and promote the new function 

packages that are

We’ve been busy organising the social calendar at 

the club, and trying to have events that cater for the 

different demographics at the club. I would like to 

thank all the members who’ve contributed or 

organised some of those events, including PC Bob 

McGregor and Tanya Stanford for organising 

Melbourne Cup Day at the club, and The Johnstons 

for being the trivia masters again. 

We also decided to involve ourselves in the 

Williamstown Festival which was run in April. 

Danny, Sally and I took over the BBQ, the kitchen 

was in full force and with an offer of free live music, 

we tempted in many passers-by. We were blessed 

with great weather and it was wonderful to see the 

club full of people, many non-members who were 

visiting for the first time. We had lots of enquiries 

regarding membership and people signing their 

children up for Tackers. Many thanks to Ian Fox who 

also helped field the enquiries as well as taking 

people out for a sail too. 

We look forward to some more exciting events, 

including the relaunch of the Royals Pantomime, 

directed by the wonderful PC Graeme West, and 

2013 sees our 160th birthday with a ball to celebrate. 

Big thanks to the H&S committee, Danny Trainor, 

Sally Herbertson, Helen Pelns, Glen Smith and Alex 

McGillivray. Having the mix between club members 

and staff members has created a great forum to put 

lots of energy into House and Social.

The last year has been a 'Steady as she goes' 

period. We have retained all of our sponsors, all at 

an increased contribution. (we have not lost any, 

even through the GFC) 

Our two major sponsors, Audi Penfold Burwood and 

Nautilus Marine Insurance have been very satisfied 

with what the association with the club brings them. 

It is now our policy to have sponsors for the year, 

rather than for a particular event, this has made 

management much easier. 

Nautilus has also been very generous in sponsoring 

the end of month Boat Owner draw, where a 

member can win a $750 credit towards their 

insurance. 

St Arnou, Oatley Wines and Musto have also been 

very generous with product, which assist us greatly. 

I also thank Col and Blake Anderson at Doyle Sails, 

their contribution and willingness to assist is much 

appreciated. 

In September last year I launched an appeal for 

funds to run a Tackers program for the Olympic 

Village School in Heidelberg West. The program was 

a great success (thank you members), and we will 

be running it again this year. It made a great 

difference to the pupils, all of whom were from 

underprivileged families. Thanks go to Mark 

Crockford from Nautilus, who topped up the fund 

with a $2,000 contribution. 

The appeal will be on again shortly, and if you can 

assist it will be greatly appreciated. 

All sponsors (and we hope, competitors) were happy 

with our premier event, the Lipton Cup Regatta, 

which again went off very well, under the 

custodianship of John Burgess, the Regatta 

Chairman. This years program has again been 

expanded, and look for news on the November 17- 

18 event soon, book in in your diary, as there will be 

a race format for everyone. 

We are about to launch a member benefits program, 

where you will be able to go to retailers and get a 

discount on product upon display of your 

membership card. The first category will be for tyres. 

As always, we are happy to talk to any member who 

has ideas on getting more sponsors into the club, I 

am always available for a chat.

Yard and Marina 

Yard and Marina. 

It has been a very busy year in the Yard. 

The Container Park has been finished off, and 

decorated, at the moment there are no plans to add 

any more containers. 

New trolleys were constructed, and we have to thank 

Peter Langford from Horner Recruitment for 

assisting in their purchase. Older trolleys will be 

gradually renovated or scrapped, depending on 

condition. 

Several piles have been replaced, the most 

prominent being on 'A' row, would boat owners 

please inspect their lines/piles regularly. Even 

though the piles are the club's responsibility, an extra 

pair of eyes inspecting is always helpful. 

New hardstand cradle steering handles will be 

supplied shortly, please use them. They have been 

designed to try and reduce injuries while steering 

cradles. 

Tidiness in the yard has improved, but be aware that 

while working in the Yard, please clean up after 

yourself, and be aware of the OH&S regulations. A 

safe workplace is what we aim for. 

During the year we have had available a scissor lift, 

it belongs to a member who lets us use it, treat it 

with respect. 

A pallet lift has been obtained, it is handy for moving 

small loads, see Steve for use. 

Shiplift. 

The shiplift team has been very busy since the 

meeting last year that authorised the go-ahead. Past 

Commodore Ray Borrett, who was appointed Project 

Manager, has worked with the selected contractor to 

produce the best design at the least cost. Three 

designs of the actual lift have been worked through. 

The first two proved not to be economical, and the 

third is what we will be presenting at the AGM, or 

shortly after.

Treasurer’s Report 

Royals had a better than budgeted financial year with the continuing effects of the global financial 

crisis negatively affecting the number of private functions in the clubhouse and membership. This left an 

operating surplus of $293,694 prior to depreciation. Outstanding debts of $16,057 were written off, to leave 

a cash operating surplus of $277,637. After deducting the non-cash charge for depreciation of $206,780, 

The Club recorded a year end surplus of $70,857. 

Donations of $12,131 continued to be well received by the Club, assisting to pay for the purchase of 

Outdoor Furniture for our Decking and provide support through the travel fund. 

The Club’s debt is manageable at $74,933 and it will be paid out in the forthcoming year. It should be 

noted that the Club has been authorised by the members to borrow up to an additional $540,000 to finance 

the building of a platform lift. Fundraising activities are currently being investigated to keep the borrowings 

to a minimum. 

Detailed below is a summary of the year’s financial results for each of The Club’s major activities. 

The House 

Overall the House incurred an operating loss increased on the previous year despite increased income of 

$62,360. This result was however better than budgeted. The focus in this area was to improve our product 

and restore member faith in getting a good meal at the Club. We believe that we have achieved this with a 

marked increase in Member income. Our pricing was probably a little low for what we were delivering 

which is indicated in the figures, however the desired increase in patronage followed and we are now 

getting regular patronage and very reasonable pricing. The short term margin loss we believe has been 

worthwhile to build our product. Our new Full time Chef has been a great addition improving member 

service and food quality. The General Committee continue to consider a house advance to encourage 

members to use the bar and dining room facilities. The advance will be redeemable for bar and dining room 

purchases. Plans to further reinvigorate and improve. The House alterations have been displayed for 

member feedback and we welcome those, the next challenge will be to finance a House project with our 

other priorities 

The bar recorded an operating profit, with operational costs continuing to rise due to our reliance on casual 

staff, and the request for more staff. Service does come at a cost but makes member life at the Club more 

enjoyable. We have employed an additional full time staff member to lessen our reliance on casuals, 

increase function revenue and improve member service.

Marina and Hardstand 

Income for the marina and hardstand increased significantly due to the introduction of an area based 

charging policy, larger boats now pay an equitable price for their space. It should be noted that the 

return is still behind other Club benchmarks and to improve our facility and operation we need to keep 

this aspect of our operations under constant review.

Yard Operations

undoubtedly incur some cost.

Racing & Sailing 

The Club continues its investment in its racing program, and our leadership continues to shine in this area. A 

better than expected return from race management services has assisted this area greatly, though some of 

this gain is a once off. Our programmed maintenance program on many of the club vessels continues to keep 

our boats in fine condition and is a necessary cost of for the Club racing program.

Royals Training Centre and Cadets 

The Club does not expect to turn a surplus in either the Cadets or the Training Centre area as investing in 

sailors for our future is the main objective. The contribution the Club makes is kept to a manageable level and 

it is pleasing to see new members coming out of the Royals Training Centre programs many of which have 

started to hire our Elliotts as evidenced by the increased revenue. The departure of our Sail Training and 

Development Manager at a critical time of the year impacted our income significantly; however we anticipate a 

more manageable loss in this area next year with our highly suitable replacement staff member secured. Club 

costs grew with no increase in revenue. 

The Club recognises the importance of having viable training and cadet programs to enhance skills and 

encourage membership and will continue to invest in them.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 


The financial report covers Royal Yacht Club of Victoria as an individual entity. Royal Yacht Club of 

Victoria Incorporated is an association incorporated in Victoria under the Associations Incorporation Act 

1981. 

The financial report is a general purpose financial report which has been prepared in accordance with 

Australian Accounting Standards, Australian Accounting Interpretations and the Associations Incorporation 

Act 1981. Australian Accounting Standards set out accounting policies that the AASB has concluded 

would result in a financial report containing relevant and reliable information about transactions, events and 

conditions to which they apply. Compliance with Australian Accounting Standards ensures that the 

financial statements and notes also comply with International Financial Reporting Standards. Material 

accounting policies adopted in the preparation of this financial report are presented below and have been 

consistently applied unless otherwise stated. 

The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs, modified, 

where applicable, by the measurement at fair value of selected non-current assets, financial assets and 

financial liabilities. 

(a) Inventories 

Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs are assigned on a first-in 

first-out basis and include direct materials, direct labour and an appropriate proportion of variable and fixed 

overhead expenses. 

(b) Property, Plant and Equipment 

Plant and equipment is stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and any impairment in value. 

Depreciation is calculated on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful life of the asset as follows: 

Plant and equipment – over 2 to 15 years 

Impairment 

The carrying values of plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment when events or changes in 

circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable. 

For an asset that does not generate largely independent cash inflows, the recoverable amount is determined 

for the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs. 

If any such indication exists and where the carrying values exceed the estimated recoverable amount, the 

assets or cash-generating units are written down to their recoverable amount. 

The recoverable amount of plant and equipment is the greater of fair value less costs to sell and value in 

use. In assessing value in use, the estimated future cash flows are discounted to their present value using a 

pre-tax discount rate that reflects current market assessments of the time value of money and the risks 

specific to the asset. 

Impairment losses (where applicable) are recognised in the income statement in the other expenses line 

item.

(c) Cash 

For the purposes of the Statement of Cash Flows, cash includes cash on hand, at banks and on deposit net of bank 

overdrafts. 

(d) Employee Entitlements 

Provision is made for benefits accruing to employees in respect of wages and salaries, annual leave, long service leave 

and other employee benefits when it is probable that settlement will be required and they are capable of being 

measured reliably. 

Wages and salaries, annual leave, long service leave and other employee benefits expected to be settled within 12 

months, are measured at their nominal values using the remuneration rate expected to apply at the time of settlement. 

Long service leave and other employee benefits which are not expected to be settled within 12 months are measured as 

the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made by the entity in respect of services provided by 

employees up to reporting date. 

Superannuation Guarantee Charge 

The club pays the Superannuation Guarantee Charge (SGC) to superannuation schemes as required under applicable 

legislation. 

(e) Income Tax 

The club is exempt from Income Tax. 

(f) Revenue 

Fees, members subscriptions and rental income are recognised as revenue on an accruals basis. 

Interest revenue is recognised on an accrual basis. 

(g) Goods and Services Tax (GST) 

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST 

incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances the GST is 

recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of expense. Receivables and 

payables in the Statement of Financial Position are shown inclusive of GST.

I have audited the accompanying financial report of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria Incorporated (‘the Club”) for the year 

ended 31 st May 2012 as set out on pages 33 to 48. 

Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report 

The committee of the club is responsible for the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view in accordance 

with Australian Accounting Standards (including Australian Accounting Interpretations) and the Associations Incorporation 

Act (Vic) 1981 and for such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation of the 

financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. 

Auditor’s Responsibility 

My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. My audit has been conducted in accordance 

with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that I comply with relevant ethical requirements relating 

to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free 

from material misstatement. 

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. 

The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement 

of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control 

relevant to the entity’s preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view in order to design audit procedures 

that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s 

internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of 

accounting estimates made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report. 

I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion.

In conducting my audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional ethical pronouncements.

In my opinion, the financial report of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria Incorporated is in accordance with the requirements

(i) giving a true and fair view of the financial position of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria Incorporated as at
