14 FRIDAY TA WORKSHOPS Beyond TC Treatment: Prevention and Intervention in Family and Community Date: Time: Location: Floor: September 1st 2:00pm - 3:30pm Riverside Suite 3 Title: A Community-Based Prevention Program The Daytop Parents Educating Parents (DPEP) program is a communitybased prevention program aimed at raising parental, school and community awareness around substance abuse problems among adolescents and young adults, increasing chances of primary prevention and early intervention. The DPEP program combines the expertise of counselors, parents and teenagers to inform parents and teachers regarding “red flag” behavioral signs and symptoms of drug use, issues of denial and conflict, as well communication and other preventive strategies. The goal of DPEP workshops is eventually to assist and empower parents, schools and communities to take responsibility and establish their own local “task force” to help their youths grow into healthy adults. This conference workshop will present and demonstrate the goals and methods of the DPEP prevention program, outlining the counselor, parent and teenager roles in this work, and describe the administrative framework. The audience will gain information and resources on how to organize a similar program within their own programs and communities. Services need to be designed to help both parent and child heal from the effects of parental substance abuse and prevent emotional scars and the repetition of trauma. Treatment for parents and children will have to do much more than address substance abuse issues, and provide a wide range of parenting, educational, child development and care, medical, recreational, and social work services. The presenters of this TA workshop will introduce their work with mothers and children in three different settings, outlining the issues encountered, treatments offered, and successes noted. Plaza, BS, CASAC, Director of OASAS Residential Services, Odyssey House, Inc., USA Cecilia Scott-Croff, MS ED; SAS, SDA, Director of Children's Services, Odyssey House, Inc., USA Alexis Gadsden, MSW, CASAC, Vice President, Outreach Project, Inc., USA Mr. Wayne O’Connell initiated the Daytop Parents Educating Parents (DPEP) Program advising parent volunteers to become community activists and educators to help raise parental/ community awareness to the growing concerns of substance abuse. Wayne and the DPEP Program received awards from numerous community based organizations along with the “DVI Staff Member of the Year Award” for his work in the field of prevention. Mr. Robert Anderson oversees outpatient programming for adolescents and adults at Daytop Village. He is also in charge of Quality Assurance for several of Daytop's outpatient programs. Robert has been affiliated with Daytop for nearly ten years. He is a graduate of Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service. Robert has developed and facilitated professional development curricula for Daytop and outside agencies, both regionally and internationally. Ms. Laura Lambe has been employed at Center Point, Inc., a national social rehabilitation agency with headquarters in Northern California, for nearly two decades. During her tenure she has participated in the development, management and supervision of Center Point’s multiple and diverse programs for adults, women with children and criminal justice populations. For the last six years she has provided oversight of an innovative TC for women offenders and their children. Ms. Susan Y. Plaza has managed programs in outpatient, residential, community-based, hospital and homeless shelter settings for 15 years. As Deputy Clinical Director at Odyssey House, a residential mental health and drug treatment agency, she oversees 608 treatment slots at four programs, serving single adults, mothers and children, adolescents and the elderly. Ms. Plaza is credentialed by OASAS as a CASAC and C.P.P. and holds a BSc with a concentration in Human and Community Services. Ms. Cecilia Scott-Croff has over 15 years of experience working with children in various settings. She is a New York State certified teacher, administrator, and Early Childhood Professional. She has two masters degrees, one with a concentration in Early Childhood Education and the other in Administration and Supervision. She has worked in TC for the last 9 years, and is a strong advocate for quality Early Childhood programs. Ms. Alexis Gadsden has more than 25 years of experience as a provider of services to special populations and as an administrator of numerous innovative treatment initiatives geared toward addressing the needs of adolescents and women in recovery. Along with her expertise in program development, she has been instrumental in cross-systems collaborations that have supported the creation of local and statewide initiatives focused on systems improvements and best practices for women with children and other special needs populations.
FRIDAY BREAKOUT SESSIONS Break-out sessions are oral presentations of research findings, program innovation, and clinical issues. The topics will be explored and discussed from different perspectives. Sessions bring together practitioners and researchers from diverse treatment settings, agencies, and countries, with the goal of sharing clinical and management experience with each other and the audience.
