both the front and back of the
vehicle.”
Hillmer added: “If a person is
stopped by law enforcement with a
commemorative registration plate in
either position instead of a regular
car registration, the vehicle would
be considered to be in violation of
those licensing laws.”
The veterans are welcome to
display the number plates above
their existing car registrations, or in
the rear window of their vehicle, as
long as their regular car registration
plates are still displayed in their
usual position.
Zimbabwe runs
out of number
plates The Zimbabwe
Central Vehicle
Registration has run
out of number plates
for vehicles in Harare.
The development is likely to
frustrate the registry's efforts to
totally phase out the old style
number plates by December 31st.
The CVR is charged with the sole
responsibility of issuing number
plates, and does so through local
authorities.
Percy Toriro, a spokesperson for the
City of Harare told the official state
newspaper, The Herald, that they
had confirmed the development and
said their Rowan Martin Building
licensing department had
completely run out of car number
plates.
He said: “We currently have no
number plates in stock. We only
have number plates for trailers and
motorcycles. We are therefore
appealing to the public not to visit
our offices for number plates.
Australian
number plate
sells for $220,000
$220,000.
A set of number
plates at an auction in
Melbourne, Australia,
fetched almost
The State of Victoria plates, which
read VIC 41 were pressed in 1910.
An anonymous phone bidder paid
$218,300 for the number plates,
which can still legally be displayed
on Victorian roads today.
Leonard Joel Australia, the auction
house which successfully sold the
plates, said: “The auctioneer started
at $100,000 and one of the bidders
immediately went to $150,000.”
She said the family selling the
number plates had purchased them
in 1950, and that they were affixed
to a 1936 V8 Cadillac.
Number plates
stolen in East
Sussex Police in East Sussex
Wealden.
have noticed an
increase in number
plate theft in
Criminals will often attach the stolen
number plates to a similar vehicle,
so that the legitimate owner will
receive any fines from parking or
speed cameras.
Sgt David Price said: “This is a
worrying trend. I would advise
vehicle owners to think carefully
about where they park, especially at
night. Try to park in a well lit area,
where your car can be seen.
“If your cars number plates are
attached with screws, consider
buying special 'non return' screws to
secure them. These are special
screws that, once tightened, cannot
be undone without drilling them out
or breaking the number plates.
These should be available at car
accessory shops.
“Many newer cars have their
number plates attached with nothing
more than double sided adhesive
tape. Obviously, that makes them
especially easy to steal.
“In these cases, I would advise that
owners either attach them with a
strong impact adhesive, so that
removal would break them, or
consider having them drilled and
non return screws fitted, if the
vehicle is suitable.”
Abu Dhabi issues
new car number
plates Police in Abu Dhabi
are beginning to issue
new number plates -
the fifth category.
“This week, 99,999 numbers will be
introduced in co-operation with the
Emirates Driving Company”, said
Lt. Colonel Mohammed Al Kutbi,
Director of Vehicles and Drivers'
Licensing Department, who went on
to reveal that the number plates will
be distributed in three phases.
“During the second phase, some
special numbers will be auctioned
off. During the third phase, all
numbers will be available for
registration and replacement.”
He said the new number plates had
been brought in because of the
rapid increase in the number of
vehicles being registered in Abu
Dhabi. German plate manufacturer
Otsch has signed a contract to
make the new number plates.
Dr Jihad Sebtia, Director of the
Emirate Driving Company, said:
“The new number plates are made
in line with international high quality
specifications to fit various climatic
conditions. The plate is
characterised by hologram features.
It also carries the UAE emblem.”
