(Matthew 28:18-20) Habitat for Humanity was founded on Christian roots and continues to build on that foundation. Financially, Habitat for Humanity charges zero interest on it’s mortgages (exodus 22:25) and tithes ten percent on each mortgage dollar received (leviticus 27:30). this is faith in action. At Habitat for Humanity of lee County, the belief is that this expansion of services globally will further the Good news by loving neighbors everywhere. Wherever Habitat for Humanity of lee County goes, the organization is compelled through obedience to share the Gospel through it’s building efforts. At right, HFH Kyrgyzstan is building houses under the “Cane Reed project.” this abundant material is friendly to the environment, local economy, volunteer labor force and community. Cane reed is 34 times lighter than brick; and the $8500 per house cost is 60 percent less. the home building process becomes quicker and more efficient. the project invests in the local economy by employing a community labor force to harvest the reeds which are woven into the timber frame, and mine the clay, sand and mud used to fortify the reeds. Reeds are better insulators than brick for the cold winters and hot summers of Kyrgyzstan, which translates into financial savings for the family. Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan At left, in the poorest areas of Bishkek, you can find dozens of children living in dilapidated shacks constructed of rotting wood and rusty, makeshift roofs with limited water supply and outhouses that empty raw sewage into an adjacent creek. As Bishkek is a primarily urban city, renovated apartments are a key way to house families into simple, decent, affordable homes. pictured are Islambek (12, white shirt) and Kylymbek Chalov (6, plaid shirt), Habitat homeowner children, in their renovated apartment. At left is the dedication of Kyrgyzstan’s 100th home. the Asangasiev family, talanyehbek, 44, a construction engineer, Baktygul, 43, an accountant, their son, 12-yearold Adilet, and 15-year-old niece, Aijana, moved into the milestone 100th home. After the collapse of the Soviet union, work dried up in their hometown of Issyk-Kul, so the family moved to the new republic’s capital Bishkek, in search of work. But poverty and unemployment abound here: the average monthly salary is $50. the family has struggled to afford their home, which consists of a room about 6 square meters and serves as kitchen, dining room, homework room, sleeping quarters, and living quarters. tajikistan is a land locked country of 7 million people in Central Asia. It is one of the poorest countries in the region, 57% of the population survive on less than $2 per day. tajikstan is on the un list of the world’s least developed countries. Habitat tajikistan was established in 1999. to date more than 530 Habitat homes have been built. At right, children of Habitat homeowners in the neighborhood are dressed for a dance in the ceremony for a tajikistan home dedication. Khujand, tajikistan AnnuAl RepoRt 2007-2008 | 41 At left, 8-year old Farida Mirzoeva and her family have been on a government list for a house for a dozen years, dating back to the days of the Soviet union. today, the family has a place to call their own in a three-room Habitat house in a Habitat development in Vahdat, tajikistan. Farida’s dad works as a camera operator and her mom as a lawyer with the organization Madadgor, which provides legal assistance to the poor. today, Farida’s mom uses her skills to help other families (like the ones she sees in her work) fill out Habitat application forms. Below is Farida’s house, part of a 12-house development in the city.
