Family Gratitude Diabetes Awareness
1075 Fulton Ave., Sacramento, CA 916.971.4 License# www.carltonseniorliving.

Parades, football, turkey and thankfulness define November 22, the fourth Thursday of the month,
a national holiday by federal decree. Family members, often from great distances, come "to break
bread together." It's Thanksgiving Day.
Traditions are observed. Everyone is eager to kick back, laugh, catch up on what everyone is doing
and comment on how the kids have grown. TVs are turned on early in the morning to watch the
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Football games are available for the rest of the day. This year, the networks give fans an NFL
triple-header; no station switching necessary.
Local stations may broadcast Turkey Bowls, high school games held on Thanksgiving or the day
before; every state has them and thousands are in attendance. Many gatherings hold their own
backyard games, and rivalries enhance the fun.
The need to connect with loved ones and to express gratitude is at the heart of this day of feasting.
It may be over a dining room tablescape of china, crystal, candles and a filled cornucopia and
attendance at a church service. The day may include staging of a deep-fried turkey barbecue in the
backyard. Fancier arrangements may include turducken (chicken and duck stuffed into turkey) or,
for vegetarians, tofu turkey.
Not a cook? Enjoy a classic holiday menu at a local restaurant. Or pick up an already prepared
turkey with all the side dishes offered by many grocery stores and restaurants.
Appreciation, the gift of time and the spirit of thankfulness all contribute to a great day.
Health
About 79 million Americans are at high risk for diabetes, because their blood sugar levels are higher than
normal. They have pre-diabetes.
Now, there's help.
A study by Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas shows that intensive early treatment, first with insulin,
then with a diabetes drug, preserves the body's insulin-producing capacity, according to Diabetes Care.
Previously, the first steps in treatment were to emphasize diet and weight management, then to couple
lifestyle changes with the diabetes drug metformin.
Another new study published in The Lancet shows that treating pre-diabetes early and aggressively with
intensive lifestyle changes and medication could be an effective way to reduce the risk of developing type 2
diabetes.
Study subjects were divided into intensive lifestyle intervention, pre-diabetes medicine (metformin) and
placebo groups. The analysis tracked the patients who did not progress to diabetes, and those whose glucose
levels returned to normal.
People in the back-to-normal-glucose group were 56 percent less likely to develop diabetes during the next 5.7
years, regardless of whether lifestyle changes or aggressive medication caused the return to normal. The study
supports a shift to early and aggressive glucose lowering.
Don't wait
Corner
At Duke University, doctors say both studies emphasize the need to aggressively treat pre-diabetes as soon as
it's diagnosed.
Waiting, or taking a one-step-at-a-time approach, increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and exposes
the body to its damaging effects for a longer period of time.

“We honor our residents with love and proudly provide life enriching experiences.”
November 2012 -- Note to Residents
We are finally enjoying fall weather and with November comes decorating for the Holidays.
No doubt we will have lots of lovely autumn leaves for Thanksgiving and then all the green, red
and tinsel for the Christmas period and our tall, very beautiful Christmas tree. The group of us,
who went on the Apple Hill outing, had a very comfortable ride on the newly repaired bus. No
rattles and shaking and we could even hear each other speaking. This was a lovely outing and a
great ride, thank you. If you have called 971-4800 recently you probably noticed that the call was
answered with the name of the facility, either Carlton Plaza or Crown depending on where the call
was picked up. This way alleviates any confusion.
The time has come for us to say farewell to Kasie “our ray of sunshine” on November 9th, as she
leaves us to take up her new position at the Elk Grove facility. We are sure she will be as successful
as she has been here in Sacramento. Our loss is without a doubt Elk Grove’s gain. We are keen to
see the new Facility with Brian and Kasie as our guides. Be assured this will happen very soon,
probably as a Wednesday outing some time this month.
The time has come for us to think of nominations for new Resident Council Officers. The positions
to be filled for 2013 are President, Vice President and Secretary. Any suggestions can be given to
Marilyn until a Nominating Committee is announced. I think we all agree that we have a lovely
group of employees who take care of our needs with a smile on the faces. It is the policy of Carlton
that employees cannot receive any gifts from residents and if they do this should be declared to
management. There is one exception and that is at Christmas time. We are collecting gifts of
money to share amongst the employees (Managers excluded) to say thank you for a job, well done.
We ask you to give generously. Thank you.
Go well and keep well,
Yvonne Eckhardt
President

Dear Residents, Families and Friends,
Fall is almost here. Just when I think it might be,
we have a week of 85 degrees. I love fall with the
cooler weather, changing of the leaves, pumpkins,
and of course, Thanksgiving right around the
corner. November always makes me stop and slow
down and remember what I am thankful for.
We have lots of special events planned for
November. On Sunday, November 11 th, we will be
presenting our Veterans Wall of Honor. This wall
will have pictures of all of our residents who are
Veterans’. If you have a picture and have not
turned it into Marilyn please do so as soon as
possible. Also, on Sunday, November 18 th we will
be having our very special Thanksgiving brunch.
This is a great day to spend with family and
friends. Please make your reservations as soon as
possible. On Thursday, Thanksgiving day, we will
be having a traditional Thanksgiving dinner during
our lunch time meal. Again, if you are planning to
spend the brunch or Thanksgiving Day with us,
please make your reservations at the front desk as
soon as possible. You can call 916 971-4800, and
let them know how many will be coming.
Remember brunch is $17 a person and
Thanksgiving Day will be $12 a person.
This is a friendly reminder to make sure all
residents check out at the front desk and sign back
in each time they leave and return to the
community. As for our guests visiting the
community, we ask that they too sign in and out at
the front desk each time they come and go. If
residents are planning to be out of the community
during a medication pass, they will want to let the
medication department be aware that they will be
gone as soon as possible, so that we may have all
medications ready to be taken on their outing.
November is a time I sit back and really think about
what I am truly thankful for in my life. My thoughts
always come back to my family, friends, residents,
staff and my good health. I am so blessed to have
all of you in my life. I am so blessed to come to
work each day and be a part of your life. You make
me a better person and fill me with purpose,
happiness and so much joy.
May you all spend Thanksgiving Day with family
and friends and be thankful for your blessings.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Warm Regards, Lisa Schumann Executive Director
Carlton Plaza of Sacramento
Residents of
the Month
Len & Judy Traina
November
2012
Judy was born on June 14, 1936 in Wisconsin and Len was born on September 5, 1933 in
New York City. Judy has one sister, Susan who lives in Albuquerque, and Len has two sisters:
Joanna and Rosemarie (deceased). Len and Judy lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico before
moving into the Carlton on July 2nd this year. They have been married for 54 years. Len
served in the Army during the Korean War. They have four children: Tracy, Christopher,
Anthony, and Julianne. They have 9 grand-children and they are expecting their first great
grandchild in February.. Judy was employed as a Nurse for 40 years and Len was a Civil
Engineer and taught Engineering at New Mexico State University. Their favorite places to
travel were Hawaii (4x), Europe (4x) and their cruise last year to the West Mediterranean.
Growing up in a close family and enjoying time with their family is very important to them.
Judy’s life philosophy is that “God is in control of everything.” Len’s philosophy is “accepting
responsibility for yourself and family.” Judy enjoyed the movie Mamma Mia and Len loves
westerns and anything John Wayne. Most notable accomplishments have been succeeding
in college with a tight budget and raising their four children who are accomplished,
decent people.
So far, their favorite activities at Carlton are bingo, balance fitness and happy hour. Len likes
to go out and play golf too.
Three words to describe Judy “caring and giving.” One word to describe Len: Friendly.
Judy loves spring and Len loves autumn. The people Judy admires most are “the caregivers
at Carlton and all the staff who take good care of us.”
What they like best about Sacramento is being near their kids and its a small, big city.
They both loved spending time in Barcelona, but they met in Milwaukee.
Welcome to Carlton Len & Judy Traina

Always Empowered, Always Young
At the age of 97 years, is one of the world's longest-serving
physicians and educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has
been healing patients at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at
St. Luke's College of Nursing.
After World War II, he envisioned a world-class hospital and college springing from the ruins of Tokyo;
thanks to his pioneering spirit and business savvy, the doctor turned these institutions into the nation's
top medical facility and nursing school. Today he serves as chairman of the board of trustees at both
organizations. Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th
birthday, including one " "” that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the
founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest
in which no role model is better than the doctor himself. Here are some of his views to ponder:
Energy comes from feeling good, not solely from eating well or sleeping a lot. We all remember how as
children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that
attitude as adults, too. It's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.
All people who live long regardless of nationality, race or gender share one thing in common: None are
overweight. For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive
oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies,
or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies,
a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat.
Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital
work. In 2016 I'll have some fun, though: I plan to attend the Tokyo Olympics!
There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65. The current retirement
age was set at 65, half a century ago, when the average life-expectancy in Japan was 68 years and only
125 Japanese were over 100 years old. Today, Japanese women live to be around 86 and men 80, and
we have 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will have about 50,000 people over the
age of 100.
Share what you know. I give 150 lectures a year, some for 100 elementary-school children, others for
4,500 business people. I usually speak for 60 to 90 minutes, standing, to stay strong.
Music and animal therapy. When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask
whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure.
Contrary to popular belief, doctors can’t cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery? I
think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine.
Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it. If a child has a toothache, and you start
playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic
need of patients: We all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art
classes.
Don't be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: You don't know when your number is up,
and you can't take it with you to the next place.
