Richard Tulloch writes…
Saturday, 16th April, when I am instituted at St Martin’s as
Rector of the Eden, Gelt and Irthing Team benefice, is going to
be one of those very important ‘turning points’ in our lives as a
family. We invite everyone to come and share with us in this
service at 3 p.m., when Bishop James Newcome will be speaking.
A lesson from Moses!
When Moses, at the age of 80, is called by God to a new work of
leading the people of Israel, he is very nervous and wonders if he
will cope with the challenge. I feel much the same as I contemplate
our move to Brampton – though I am a little younger! But I
believe we often experience God’s power in new ways when we
move beyond ‘ministry waters’ with which we are familiar. I
came across these thoughts recently: “Nothing plays a greater
role in God’s desire to shape our lives than the shift from one
extreme to the other…this is meant to ensure that we do not settle
into any situation but remain pliable, and to make us recognise
that true insight does not come from what we have grasped but
from ever greater readiness and deeper obedience.” “The person
who reaches out for what lies ahead of him is always becoming
younger.” I hope our move to Brampton will keep me young!
A brief family background
Let me sketch a brief background. After studying Psychology
and Physiology at Oxford, my first job was working in East Africa
with a coffee company as a junior manager. The job also
involved piloting a small plane to get around the area to visit the
coffee estates. Whilst there, I felt that God was calling me to
leave business and train for the ordained ministry in the Church
of England. I served my first curacy in Morden in South London,
and then moved to Jesmond Parish Church in Newcastle to
be an assistant minister. Within a year, I met and married my
wife, Janet, who was a junior doctor specialising in ophthalmology.
Our three children, Katherine, Anna and Edward, were all
born in Newcastle. After eleven years there, I was invited to
become vicar of St John’s, Wimborne, in Dorset. I have enjoyed
17 very fulfilling years as vicar. Janet worked as an eye doctor at
Bournemouth Hospital, and then five years ago, she retrained as
a GP. Katherine is working in London in publishing. Anna is
soon to qualify as a doctor at Birmingham. Edward hopes to read
medicine at university starting in September.
