BRAND NEW DRAMA
Prepare for the Watson Hall to be transformed when brand
new drama takes to the stage in May. Sward! The Story of a
Meadow is “an entertaining romp featuring songs, more than a
few laughs and at least one nice frock.” It has its roots in ancient
myth, oral records and modern science. Young farmer Jason
Drysdale is out on his quad bike, spraying thistles, when he spots
botany student Jemima Foxley crawling through the grass verge
at the side of a minor road in Leedale — and their chance meeting
propels them on a magical journey.
It’s a newly commissioned play by the North Yorkshire
based Blaize Theatre Company in collaboration with Highlights
Rural Touring Scheme. The production, which has a 40-date tour
in May, June and July throughout the North, will be accompanied
by a photographic exhibition that follows the changing face of
PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Thank you to everyone who completed the recent Broadband Survey. We had
an approximate 33% return rate, which as these things go, is pretty good! It must
have been the temptation of the M&S voucher which did it — the winner was Alan
Gregory, from High Meadow, Sid’s Field. Well done Alan, and welcome to Castle Carrock!
On that murky issue of Broadband, anyone who is interested in progressing this
project should register at www.cumbriabroadband.com — the more people who do
this the better. You should also regularly check your connection speed at
www.speedtester.bt.com. By doing this you are again showing that this area is lagging
behind on the technology front, and that we need all the funding we can get to improve
the situation.
On another note — the walkers amongst you will have noticed several recent
improvements around the village; namely, some resurfacing work on the lonning behind
Rectory Road, and a few months ago, the same sort of work on Kilwren Lonning
(running from the shop up towards Garth Marr). Both these projects were funded in
part by Neighbourhood Forum and the County Council’s Parish Paths Initiative (a big
thank you to them…) More recently, repairs have been made to the verges at Jockey
Shield to enable vehicles to park without obstructing the road; a huge improvement,
we think. We were helped on this by the RSPB and a local resident — thanks to all
concerned. All work was carried out in expert fashion by JA & A Wannop. Tricia Meynell,
flower-rich hay meadows through the seasons. In Castle Carrock,
the exhibition will be hosted in St Peter’s Church. Screens will
house monitors displaying images of flora and fauna of the
meadows and a large flat screen will show fixed point photography
taken over a 12-month period. The performance in the Watson
Hall is on Sunday, May 1st, at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are from
Tom on 670054. £9 for adults, £7 for children under 16. The capacity
will be just 60 seats — so very much first come first
served.
Final interesting fact: when we think of rare, fragile and
endangered habitats and ecosystems, our minds turn towards
Amazonian rainforests or Antipodean coral reefs. But in the UK,
we have one of the most threatened — the traditional upland hay
meadow. There are less than four square miles of this habitat left
in the world and 40% of that is here in the North Pennines.
Thriving Watson Hall
About 20 people came along to the
Watson Hall AGM on March 25th to reflect on
the past year’s actitivites, take a look at the
books and plan for the year ahead. Grants
from a wide variety of bodies, including the
city council, county council, parish council
and the Watson Cottages Trust have helped
pay for the new roof, new chairs, secondary
glazing and outside maintenance. Other
funding has paid for a new sound system
and new tablecloths. Our own fundraising
has paid for the refurbishment of the toilet
block. Rental income has increased by 15%
and met the vast majority of our general
costs. We’re in good shape financially.
Regular activities have included
Guides, toddlers, bowls, Women’s Institute,
U3A Art Group, Pilates, children’s birthday
parties and private functions. Four live concerts,
three of which were engaged through
the Highlights Rural Touring Scheme, have
again been enjoyed by sell-out audiences.
The hall has also been used by the school,
Kids’ Club, Music on the Marr, parish council,
Friends of Castle Carrock School and St Peter’s
Church. We’ve hosted the summer carnival,
Christmas dinner and carols in the hall,
as well as a model railway exhibition.
Our objectives now are to overhaul
the heating system, re-varnish the floor,
erect a noticeboard, attract two more regular
user activities and double our fundraising.
All committee members were re-elected and
all representative members are to continue.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed
to the running of the hall over the past 12
months — it’s been a good year!
Sending out an SOS for the Red Squirrel
The Red Squirrel is the UK’s only native squirrel and needs your help now to
prevent them from becoming locally extinct. They are under constant threat from the
grey squirrel, an introduction from North America that out-competes them for food and
carries the Squirrel Pox Virus (SQPV) that they are immune to, but when passed on to
a red squirrel causes death, usually within 15 days from onset.
There has been an outbreak of SQPV in this area recently, with cases being confirmed
by the Veterinary Laboratory Agency. At the moment the only way to save reds
is to control the increasing numbers of grey squirrels. Brampton Red Squirrel Group is a
non-funded group of volunteers working within your area to promote the preservation
of the red squirrel population for the public benefit and to protect these wonderful creatures
from extinction, but we need donations to: buy traps and feed for grey squirrel
control; buy feeders and feed for monitoring reds; fund blood sampling for research
into SQPV; fund educational and promotional material; fund awareness campaigns.
Can you help? I can assure you that every penny we raise goes directly towards
red squirrel conservation/grey control. Your support would be appreciated.
Cheques should be made payable to Brampton Red Squirrel Group and sent to Julie
Bailey, BRSG Volunteer Secretary, Woodside, Armathwaite, Cumbria, CA4 9SX. We also
urgently need volunteers to undertake trap control. Please contact me on 01228
562263 or 07920 858475 or by e-mail to j.bailey203@btinternet.com. You can
also help by reporting all sightings of squirrels (grey or red) to the above contacts.
CHARLES the Red Squirrel
This is ‘Charles,’ made by Kirsty Armstrong, coordinator of Brampton Red
Squirrel Group and a professional sculptor. ‘Charles’ is named after patron
of the Red Squirrel Survival Trust, HRH the Prince of Wales, whom Kirsty
presented with No.1, of the edition of 100, at Hutton-in-the-Forest in February.
Specialising in wildlife sculpture, she has worked for several major
figurine manufacturers; this, however, is her first solo project. ‘Charles’ is
lifesized and finished in copper. He is available to purchase at a cost of
£125, with £10 from each sale going towards red squirrel conservation
projects throughout the UK. By purchasing ‘Charles’, you are actively
helping to protect and save one of the UK’s native species. To order or for
more information, you can contact Kirsty on aartducko@aol.com.
Broadband: Improving the Speed
It is no surprise to discover from the recent Broadband survey that most of
us have problems with the speed of our service, except, inexplicably, one who is
with Plusnet. Short of a major uplift in the service by fibre optic cable (we are
working on it) there are a couple of practical things you can do which may improve
your ADSL speed.
1. Look at where your phone line enters your house. If it terminates in a white box
you have a Network Terminating Point (NT5). It is from here you are likely to get
the best broadband connection if you plug your router directly into the ADSL
socket on this box. This bypasses the other phone wiring in your home which can
pick up radio interference from your appliances and corrupt the whole caboodle.
2. If your incoming phone line terminates in a black box you do not have a NT5 and
you should ask BT or your service provider, to fit one. It costs about £40 but they
may do it for nothing depending on how bad they judge your complaint to be, and
how deeply and for how long you moan. It helps if you regularly and at different
times of day, check your speed at www.speedtester.bt.com. This information is
logged by BT and will help them verify your complaint about slow speeds.
3. There is a video presentation by Phil Thompson given at a recent broadband conference
outlining this and more. The pictures are spectacularly numb (not his fault)
but all the info is there and it is worth a look. Put ‘Broadband & Localism Conference
–Individuals Workshop’ into YouTube and select the 17 min 16 Jan 11 icon.
Or email me and I will send you the link.
4. Please let me know about your success, or anything else. One gets desperate.
Richard Tulloch writes…
Saturday, 16th April, when I am instituted at St Martin’s as
Rector of the Eden, Gelt and Irthing Team benefice, is going to
be one of those very important ‘turning points’ in our lives as a
family. We invite everyone to come and share with us in this
service at 3 p.m., when Bishop James Newcome will be speaking.
A lesson from Moses!
When Moses, at the age of 80, is called by God to a new work of
leading the people of Israel, he is very nervous and wonders if he
will cope with the challenge. I feel much the same as I contemplate
our move to Brampton – though I am a little younger! But I
believe we often experience God’s power in new ways when we
move beyond ‘ministry waters’ with which we are familiar. I
came across these thoughts recently: “Nothing plays a greater
role in God’s desire to shape our lives than the shift from one
extreme to the other…this is meant to ensure that we do not settle
into any situation but remain pliable, and to make us recognise
that true insight does not come from what we have grasped but
from ever greater readiness and deeper obedience.” “The person
who reaches out for what lies ahead of him is always becoming
younger.” I hope our move to Brampton will keep me young!
A brief family background
Let me sketch a brief background. After studying Psychology
and Physiology at Oxford, my first job was working in East Africa
with a coffee company as a junior manager. The job also
involved piloting a small plane to get around the area to visit the
coffee estates. Whilst there, I felt that God was calling me to
leave business and train for the ordained ministry in the Church
of England. I served my first curacy in Morden in South London,
and then moved to Jesmond Parish Church in Newcastle to
be an assistant minister. Within a year, I met and married my
wife, Janet, who was a junior doctor specialising in ophthalmology.
Our three children, Katherine, Anna and Edward, were all
born in Newcastle. After eleven years there, I was invited to
become vicar of St John’s, Wimborne, in Dorset. I have enjoyed
17 very fulfilling years as vicar. Janet worked as an eye doctor at
Bournemouth Hospital, and then five years ago, she retrained as
a GP. Katherine is working in London in publishing. Anna is
soon to qualify as a doctor at Birmingham. Edward hopes to read
medicine at university starting in September.
We are delighted to bring you some of the very best roots music from around the world. Cumbria is a famous destination not only
for scenery, good food and hospitality but also music; we have no end of established and emerging talent populating our remarkable
landscape. There is much to be proud of. MOM this year, reflects some of it.
Friday Night. Greg Wilson & The Big Caffeine Fix. Penrith based new band fronted by singer/songwriter Greg. Nicola Reed.
The pride of Carlisle. Nicola has an angelic voice and is a very creative, earthy musician. Ethan Thomas: Young Musicians’
Showcase highlight last year, local lad and rising star, he is a regular at Solfest and national festivals, much in demand for fine
guitar work, self penned songs and his dry humor. Rory Connor: Alston resident and part of Tarras. ‘One of the most promising
young contemporary song writers in England.’ Archie Fisher BBC Radio Scotland. Room Full of Owls: What’s going on in
Alston ? They have more than their fair share of talent with this innovative, young, folky alternative rock outfit. The Baghdaddies:
Legendary Folk rockers from the other end of the wall with strong Balkan tendencies, Caribbean grooves, Middle Eastern
rhythms and some Geordie touches, all awash with influences such as Klezmer, Ska, Jazz, Punk and Metal, delivered with theatre
and exuberance. Uplifting and infectiously danceable, full of blistering brass, rousing five part vocal harmonies and a rhythm section
that you can’t keep still to. This is not the time to sleep.
Saturday Afternoon. Segretta Hot Three: Traditional New Orleans Jazz from these accomplished Cumbrian gents. Phil Pipe:
Troubadour, songwriter, humorist and teller of tales from a more poetic age. Stooshie: Fine folk foursome from Keswick. Traditional
tunes given the scintillating Stooshie makeover. No SoapNo Radio: New local band fronted by Mark Wilson. Well loved at
Lanercost Cricket Club; you know how fussy they are. Keith Donnelley: Famous international baldie, sensitive singer and comedian.
Bob Fox: Many sing from the mining, shipbuilding, and fishing tradition of the North East, few of them a well as Bob. He
appears in the lineup of just about every folk festival in the country. Don’t miss his afternoon opening set. Sadie Jemmett: London
resident and Judy Collins protégé, Sadie gives a few established songs new appeal and adds some of her own well observed
and beautifully crafted work. Engaging and charming stage presence with polished delivery. Chris While and Julie Mathews:
Eight times nominated for BBC R2 Folk awards and Best Duo winners in 2009. They are world renowned for their affinity on
stage and for the energy and enthusiasm of their live performances. Look out for ‘Stone of Gelt’ from the All Along the Wall collaboration.
Young Musicians’ Showcase: Details to follow.
Saturday Night. Jon Brindley: Resident of Wigan with a fondness for Formby. A lifetime musician, Jon will change your perception
of how things can be done. He is a good and engaging singer but look and listen to the guitar skill, style and technique.
Chris James: Undoubtedly Carlisle’s best kept secret .With his dazzling guitar style Chris is a Blues musician like no other ; perhaps
the best this side of The USA. He is able to draw out an authentic Mississippi Delta sound and has the voice to match. Hadrian's
Union: Local lads, fast making a name for themselves on the national scene with their engaging, self penned, blend of
Folk, Bluegrass & Jazz. Katharine Pickering: Since being showcased at MOM last year, this Brampton lass has decided she
wants to be a professional performer. Here she is, performing professionally. Sarah Gillespie featuring Gilad Atzmon: Described
by Rock’n’Reel as a ‘bracingly eclectic mix of beat poetry with Jazz, Folk and Middle eastern elements’. Sarah’s music is
a sonic reflection of the contemporary London street; a melting pot mix of urban-folk stamped with her trademark lyricism that
knits everyday banter with raw poetry. Here with world renowned Gilad Atzmon. Daimh (pronounced Dive): Combined height 36
ft and weighing more than half a ton, men of Cape Breton, Ireland & Scotland come together for pure Celtica. “Their music is
powerhouse stuff and their gigs are an overwhelming and exuberant experience.” Songlines. “One of the most exhilarating acoustic
bands on the Celtic map.” Irish Music Magazine. “Daimh have a reputation for producing traditional music that is as skillful as
it is high octane.”The Hearld. “Awesomely tight yet thrillingly wild.” The Scotsman. Nuff said. RWJ 250311
