Marcella Louis Brenner W’32, H’01 has been a<br />
public school teacher and principal, a scholar,<br />
and an educator. She founded and directed the<br />
Museum Education Program at The George<br />
Washington University, establishing the field <strong>of</strong><br />
museum education and bringing to the forefront<br />
the importance <strong>of</strong> making art accessible and<br />
meaningful to a wider circle <strong>of</strong> the public. For<br />
her pioneering work in art education, she received<br />
an honorary doctorate from MICA in 2001.<br />

As an administrator and consultant, she has<br />
introduced many programs in the U.S. and<br />
Israel which focus on helping pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
teachers to excel. She is the widow <strong>of</strong> world<br />
renowned painter Morris Louis ’32, in whose<br />
honor she provides an annual scholarship at<br />
MICA.Additionally, she has endowed the<br />
Marcella Brenner Distinguished MAT Scholar<br />
Award and donated a major painting by<br />
Morris Louis, which is prominently exhibited<br />
in the Brown Center’s Leidy Atrium.
