MESSAGE
Stepping up together
The airline industry has continually had to adapt to change, and
indeed more so, to the pace of change, over the past decade.
The goal post has consistently moved each and every time airlines
thought they had overcome the last set of challenges. Faced with the
uncertainties of a subdued global economy, high fuel prices, volatile
exchange rates, an endless series of exogenous shocks, political
unrest and other imponderables, airlines have had to make reinvention
an inbuilt feature of their strategies.
At Air Mauritius, the way forward is described in a ‘7-Step Plan’
carefully prepared after assessing our operating environment, our
competitive position, our core competencies as well as our role as a
key partner of the Mauritian economy and that of a listed commercial
company. The plan was rolled out around the beginning of the
year. Initial measures designed to bring shorter term recovery are well
under way and our improved results for the quarter ending the 30th of
June 2012 indicate that we are heading in the right direction.
Our network has also been reviewed to make it better adapted to
new operating realities. Although we had to suspend certain routes,
we reinforced the network, increased frequencies on destinations we
retained, consolidated hubs in strategic locations in Asia, Africa and
Europe, while rebalancing growth towards emerging markets and
countries of the Indian Ocean rim. We have also reinforced collaboration
with partner airlines. As a result, our valued customers are being
offered more flexibility and a wider choice in terms of destinations
and schedule.
We are indeed privileged to be serving over 1.3 million passengers,
many of whom have been travelling with us for a very long time.
This is why our customers are at the centre of everything we do and
one of the steps of our ‘7-Step Plan’ is dedicated to Customer Service.
We have initially set an objective of raising the airline to a four-star
level on Skytrax, the airline excellence tracking system. In this context,
we have initiated a comprehensive programme to step up our service
offering. The whole Air Mauritius Team is presently going through an
education programme designed to uplift our service as we will all be
Stepping UP Together. We have rightly called the programme “Stepping
UP Together” as we take a view that all of us have an input in the
final customer service delivery and that we should all act as partners
in service delivered to YOU.
We hope you will see some visible change in the next months as
we all keep “Stepping UP Together” to provide YOU with a better experience
each time YOU fly with us.

Le secteur aérien a dû s’adapter au changement et, surtout, au
rythme du changement, au fil de la dernière décennie. A chaque fois
que les lignes aériennes croyaient avoir surmonté une vague de défis,
elles ont dû systématiquement réviser leurs objectifs. Confrontées aux
incertitudes de la crise économique mondiale, aux prix élevés du carburant,
aux taux de change instables, à une suite interminable de
chocs exogènes, aux troubles politiques et autres impondérables, les
compagnies aériennes ont dû faire de la réinvention un élément essentiel
de leurs stratégies.
A Air Mauritius, la voie à suivre s’inscrit dans un « 7-Step Plan » (Plan
de 7 étapes) qui a été soigneusement élaboré après avoir évalué
notre cadre de fonctionnement, notre position concurrentielle, nos
compétences fondamentales ainsi que notre rôle de partenaire clé
de l’économie mauricienne et d’entreprise cotée en Bourse. Ce plan
a démarré depuis le début de l’année. Les mesures initiales conçues
pour un redressement à court terme sont déjà bien enclenchées et
les résultats du trimestre se terminant au 30 juin 2012 démontrent que
nous sommes sur la bonne voie.
De plus, nous avons revu notre réseau pour qu’il soit mieux adapté
aux nouvelles réalités d’opération. Bien que nous ayons dû supprimer
certaines liaisons, nous avons renforcé le réseau, augmenté les vols
sur les destinations que nous avons maintenues, consolidé les plaques
tournantes stratégiques en Asie, en Afrique et en Europe, tout en
rééquilibrant la croissance vers les marchés émergents et les pays de
l’océan Indien. Nous avons également consolidé notre collaboration
avec nos partenaires aériens. Par conséquent, nous pouvons offrir à
nos fidèles clients une plus grande flexibilité et un meilleur choix en
termes de destinations et d’horaires.
Nous sommes conscients du privilège de servir plus de 1,3 million
de passagers, dont beaucoup sont des clients de longue date. C’est
pour cela que notre clientèle se trouve au centre de nos préoccupations
et qu’une des étapes de notre “7-Step Plan” est spécialement
dédiée à son service. Notre objectif principal est de rehausser notre
service au niveau quatre-étoiles du classement Skytrax, l’organisme
de notation des compagnies aériennes. Dans cette optique, nous
avons lancé un programme global pour améliorer nos prestations.
Toute l’équipe d’Air Mauritius s’est engagée dans un programme de
formation conçu à cet effet car c’est Ensemble que nous Volerons
plus Haut. Nous avons ainsi surnommé ce programme « Voler plus
Haut Ensemble » car nous estimons que chaque membre de l’équipe
apporte sa contribution au service final offert aux clients et que nous
devrions tous agir comme des partenaires à VOTRE service.
Nous espérons que vous constaterez des changements visibles
sur nos prochains vols à mesure que nous « VOLONS plus Haut Ensemble
» pour qu’à chaque fois que VOUS choisirez un vol d’Air Mauritius,

Time to refresh the soul
Temps du baume pour l’âme
As the seasons change, so does our spiritual well-being. And
the arrival of spring in the southern hemisphere heralds a period of
rebirth and renewal. It refreshes the soul, gives new life to plants,
which burst into colour displaying their blooms, and revitalises us
with enthusiasm for life and the coming summer season.
It is during this period that the island lifestyle in Mauritius becomes
more pronounced. People slowly start to prepare and
plan for the summer celebrations, and the sega beach parties.
In Moka, the central district of the island, the land is fertile and
covered with tall sugar cane plantations, vegetable and flower
fields. On a stroll through the various markets, the abundance
of fresh produce available will astound you. The Moka area is
steeped in history, reflecting the island’s recent past.
The shops and malls also use this period to restock with the
latest spring and summer collections. Over the years Mauritius
has slowly developed into a shopping paradise offering the latest
clothes and designer wear from the top fashion houses. And with
the opening of Bagatelle Malls of Mauritius a year ago, shopping
has become a lot more entertaining.
Besides their parents’ buying special souvenirs and holiday
mementos, younger children will enjoy the play areas or the skate
parks. The mall also houses modern cinemas where the latest
Bollywood or western box office hits can be viewed.
So let the season invigorate you, kick off your shoes and stroll
on the white sands of the island’s beaches and let the stresses of
winter wash away as you dip into the warm, refreshing waters
of this Indian Ocean paradise.

Quand le changement de saison arrive, notre bien-être spirituel
est sur la même longueur d’onde. L’arrivée du printemps dans l’hémisphère
sud annonce une période de renaissance et de renouveau.
Il régénère l’âme, donne une nouvelle vie aux plantes qui regorgent
de fleurs aux couleurs vives, et ravive notre joie de vivre et notre impatience
de voir arriver l’été.
Pendant ce temps, le rythme de vie à l’île Maurice s’accélère. Les
habitants se préparent et planifient les réjouissances estivales, les parties
de séga sur la plage.
Dans la région de Moka, au cœur de l’île, les terres fertiles sont couvertes
de champs de canne à sucre, de légumes et de fleurs. En flânant
sur les marchés, vous serez surpris de l’abondance des produits frais. De
plus, cette région est ancrée dans l'histoire, étant le reflet d'un passé
récent.
Les magasins et complexes commerciaux s’activent également
pour afficher les dernières collections de la mode printemps-été. Au fil
des années, Maurice s’est taillé une réputation de paradis du shopping ;
on y trouve vêtements et accessoires dernier cri provenant de maisons
de couture haut de gamme. Et le shopping est encore plus divertissant
depuis l’ouverture de « Bagatelle Malls of Mauritius », il y a un an.
Pendant que les parents recherchent des souvenirs de vacances
typiques, les jeunes enfants peuvent s’amuser sur le terrain de jeux, ou
faire du patin en toute sécurité. Bagatelle est aussi fière de ses salles
de cinéma sophistiquées qui projettent les dernières têtes d’affiches
occidentaux ou de Bollywood.
Laissez-vous porter par l’air revigorant de la saison ; enlevez vos
chaussures pour flâner sur les plages de sable blanc ; oubliez le stress

A seasoned tandem
for challenging times
Un tandem chevronné pour des temps difficiles
Last 30 August, the Board of directors of Air Mauritius
elected Mr Appalsamy Thomas, GOSK, as Chairman and confirmed
Mr Andre Viljoen as Chief Executive Officer.
Mr Thomas holds an MBA from the University of Surrey, UK, and
is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management of UK, the
Mauritian Institute of Management and the Mauritius Institute of
Directors. The current Group Head of Human Resources, Marketing
and Communications of Harel Mallac and Chairman of Mauritius
Telecom, started his career with Air Mauritius, where he spent 13
years in various positions, including that of Executive Adviser to
the Chairman and Managing Director. He then worked as Human
Resources Manager for British American Tobacco in Mauritius
and abroad. In 2001, he joined DCDM (Mauritius) as free-lance
consultant before becoming its CEO for the Central, Eastern and
Southern Africa Region in 2004.
Mr Viljoen, a Chartered Accountant (South Africa) with over
30 years experience in aviation, joined Air Mauritius as Chief
Financial Officer and Chief Information Officer in April 2009 after
being Group Managing Director of the Cullinan Travel Group
for two years. He was Chief Operating Officer of South African
Express Airways from 1995 to 1998 before being promoted in 1998
as Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of South
African Airways (SAA). From 2001 to 2004, he occupied the position
of President and Chief Executive Officer of SAA.
Considering their prestigious careers and wide experience of
aviation, this seasoned tandem should be able to meet the challenges
facing the national airline and the global airline industry.

confirmé M. Andre Viljoen au poste de directeur général.
M. Thomas est titulaire d’un MBA de l’Université de Surrey,
au Royaume Uni, et Fellow du Chartered Institute of Management
of UK, du Mauritian Institute of Management et du
Mauritius Institute of Directors. L’actuel directeur des ressources
humaines, du marketing et des communications du
groupe Harel Mallac et président de Mauritius Telecom débute
sa carrière à Air Mauritius, où il reste 13 ans à divers postes,
y compris celui de conseiller exécutif du président-directeur
général. Il est ensuite directeur des ressources humaines à la
British American Tobacco à Maurice et à l'étranger. Il rejoint
DCDM à Maurice comme consultant freelance en 2001 et
devient son PDG pour la région de l’Afrique australe, centrale
et orientale en 2004.
M. Viljoen, expert comptable (Afrique du Sud) compte
plus de 30 ans d’expérience dans l’aviation. Il débute à Air
Mauritius en tant que directeur financier et directeur informatique
en avril 2009 après avoir été le directeur du groupe
Cullinan Travel pendant deux ans. Chef des opérations de
South African Express Airways de 1995 à 1998 et promu directeur
financier et vice-président exécutif de South African
Airways (SAA) en 1998. Il occupe le poste de président-directeur
général de la SAA de 2001 à 2004.
De par leur carrière prestigieuse et leur vaste expérience
du secteur, ce tandem chevronné devrait pouvoir relever les
défis auxquels font face la compagnie nationale et l’industrie
aérienne internationale.

Air Mauritius has now moved from Terminal 2F to the more
modern and spacious Terminal 2E in Roissy Charles de Gaulle.
It is virtually an airport in itself with three zones for boarding
and disembarking at Gates K, L and M, as well as reorganised
Check-in and passport control zones.
Air Mauritius passengers now have easier access to PARAFE
(fast automatic passport control), as well as the new facilities of
Satellite 4, namely a vast commercial area offering all the famous
brands and a state-of-the-art boarding hall designed for
tranquillity and relaxation. Business class passengers can also
benefit from the largest lounge of the airport, whose architectural
concept is inspired from nature.
"This move to Terminal 2E is good news indeed. With more
parking bays linked to the terminal building and more fluid security
controls, our passengers will save time and we can offer
them a better level of comfort. Transit and boarding passengers
will enjoy improved facilities and a more pleasant environment"

Last August, thousands of tourists and race goers gathered
on the hippodrome of Deauville La Touques (Normandy,
North of France) to attend the “Journées de l’île Maurice”,
one of the major horseracing events in France since 2004.
France Galop once again sponsored this annual wellknown
summer meeting of Deauville Lucien Barrière. During
these two-day celebrations, Air Mauritius, as a founding partner,
joined with Marcel Chaouat, the initiator of the “Journées
de l’île Maurice”.
The Mauritius national carrier can pride itself for sponsoring
the first race Tiercé, Quarté, Quinté + “Prix de Pont Leveque
– Air Mauritius” won by Sargasses and its jockey Thomas Huet.
Dominique Guindon and Marc Hovelacque, co-owners of
Sargasses, were delighted.
The title of Miss England is one of the most coveted titles
across England and is a passport to the Miss World Finals. This
year’s event, sponsored by the Mauritius Tourism Promotion
Authority (MTPA), was indeed a massive opportunity for
Mauritius to be featured as ‘heaven on earth’ and dream holi-

« Les Journées de l’île Maurice » sont devenues depuis leur
première édition, le 15 août 2004, sous l’égide de France Galop,
une tradition incontournable du calendrier hippique en France.
Pour cet événement annuel du prestigieux Meeting d’été de
Deauville Lucien Barrière, l’hippodrome de Deauville La Touques
en Normandie avait revêtu les couleurs de Maurice, les jeudi 2 et
vendredi 3 août 2012. Des milliers de touristes et turfistes sont ainsi
venus assister dans ce cadre idyllique aux courses programmées
et dédiées à l’île Maurice.
Air Mauritius, en tant que partenaire fondateur, s’était une
fois de plus associé, à l’occasion de ces deux jours de festivités,
à Marcel Chaouat, l’initiateur des « Journées de l’île Maurice » et
président de l’Association Galopathlon. La compagnie aérienne
nationale a eu l’honneur de parrainer le Tiercé, Quarté et Quinté
+ de la première course – « Prix de Pont L’eveque – Air Mauritius »
– qui a vu la victoire de Sargasses monté par le jockey Thomas

Le titre de Miss Angleterre est l’un des plus convoités
d’Angleterre car il est un tremplin pour la finale de Miss Monde.
Cette année, le concours, parrainé par l’Office de Promotion
du Tourisme à Maurice (MTPA) en juin, a été une opportunité
extraordinaire de présenter l’ile Maurice comme un « paradis
sur terre » et une destination de rêve pour des vacances. Air
Mauritius, ligne aérienne nationale, a été fière de faire partie

When finalist Charlotte Holmes,
who eventually went on to win Miss
England 2012, was asked how she
would promote Mauritius if ever she
won the title, she revealed that her
grandmother was Mauritian and that
Mauritius was very close to her heart.
As such, she would work with the
MTPA and Air Mauritius to publicize
this destination to the best of her capabilities.
Two days later in early July, newly crowned Miss England,
Charlotte Holmes flew Air Mauritius on her first official duty to
open the MTPA Shopping Fiesta and Carnival, in Mauritius.
Fauja Singh, world famous 101-year old marathon runner of
Punjab origin, now settled in England, ran the Mauritius Marathon
from Tamarin to Saint Félix in support of SOS Children’s village. He
paid during his stay in the island, a courtesy call to Air Mauritius,
one of the main sponsors of the event.
Affectionately called "Babajee", Fauja Singh who started his
career at 89, is a huge inspiration to runners around the world.
Very fit, lucid and fluent, he expressed his deepest appreciation
for the warmest welcome received at Air Mauritius. "I have
been very looked after since I reached the Air Mauritius counter
at Heathrow airport until my arrival in Mauritius. The food was
excellent and the crew was so caring that I did not even need
the help of the people who accompanied me."
In April 2012, Fauja Singh completed the London Marathon
in 7 hours 49 minutes. He has raised thousands of pounds for various
charities globally. At 101, he has proved that he is still fit to run
to support a worthy cause. Holder of world records, he was an
Olympic torch bearer in London both in 2004 and this year.

Fauja Singh, célèbre marathonien âgé de 101 ans
originaire du Pendjab et résident en Angleterre, a couru le
marathon de Maurice de Tamarin à Saint-Félix pour soutenir
le SOS Children’s village. Il a lors de son séjour, rendu une visite
de courtoisie à Air Mauritius, un des principaux parrains de
l’événement.
Affectueusement surnommé Babajee, Fauja Singh qui a
commencé à courir à 89 ans, est une figure populaire parmi les
coureurs du monde entier. Très en forme, lucide et loquace, il a
exprimé sa grande satisfaction de l’accueil et du service d’Air
Mauritius. « J’ai reçu un accueil des plus chaleureux dès mon
arrivée au comptoir d’Air Mauritius à Heathrow jusqu’à ma sortie
de l’aéroport à l’île Maurice. La nourriture était excellente et
l’équipage s’est si bien occupé de moi que je n’ai pas eu besoin
de l’aide de mes accompagnateurs. »
En avril 2012, Fauja Singh a terminé le marathon de Londres
en 7 heures et 49 minutes. Il a recueilli des dizaines de
milliers de livres sterling pour des oeuvres de bienfaisance dans

Iconic cities around the world have developed
their own character and identity. New York is
known as “The City that Never Sleeps”. Vienna is
known as “The City of Music”, and “when a man
is tired of London he is tired of life”. South African
iconic city Johannesburg is no different.
However Johannesburg, Joburg, Jozi, Egoli is
unique in the varied characters it has developed
since it was founded in the early 19th century.

Historically called the “City of Gold” following the discovery
of that metal on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the
inevitable gold rush brought an influx of persons of every
kind to the area – all in search of the proverbial “pot
of gold”.
The tent town grew to become a sprawling mining
town, as the area also proved to be rich in minerals other
than gold – diamonds, iron, tin and copper. In fact the
Khoi and San, who were the original indigenous inhabitants
of this vast area many thousands of years ago,
were the first to mine iron and tin.
Archaeological evidence suggests that they used
iron and tin for their arrow tips and other useful implements.
The Sotho continued these “mining” activities,
as did the Tswana people who came from the north
of southern Africa and settled in the area. Evidence of
copper, tin and iron smelting activities can be seen at
the Melville Koppies. The City of Gold is the city’s favourite
characterisation to foreign visitors.
For a journey into the ancient past of Johannesburg,
and possibly the planet, a short trip to the Cradle of
Cradle of Humankind.

Humankind at the Sterkfontein Caves, about 40 km outside
the city centre, will show you why Africa is regarded

various colours, flavours, tastes and sizes
are exported to exclusive delicatessens
and top European restaurants. Their
unmistakable flavour and the international
label of “unrefined sugars” that guarantees
their authenticity are a treat for pastry
chefs and master chocolate makers of the
most exclusive gourmet restaurants.
The adventure cannot end without
sampling the “arranged rums”, displayed
alongside tropical sweets and jams.
The highlight of the visit is of course
the gourmet break at “Le Fangourin”
restaurant, which offers exquisite cuisine
made of fresh, local products.

Chaque épisode, chaque anecdote lève

fascination qu’il a exercée sur les hommes
et l’impact incroyable sur le destin de l’île
Maurice. Tous ces récits passionnants se
déroulent dans un circuit animé qui permet
même de poser le pied sur une barge,
flottant à quai à l’intérieur du musée et qui
transportait le sucre ou encore de mettre
en marche une locomotive d’époque.
La visite se prolonge au Village Boutik,
où l’on peut goûter aux 11 précieuses
variétés de sucres bruns d’exception dont
les cristaux aux couleurs, goûts et tailles
variés sont exportés vers les épiceries
fines et les grands restaurants européens.

Although there are no longer any coffee plantations
in Moka, the region had strong links with this commodity
in the 18th century with French settlers who came mostly
from the district of Moka in Brittany or who imported coffee
from the port bearing this name in Yemen.
Today Moka bears a double identity. It’s a village at
the foot of the mountain range that separates it from the
capital, Port-Louis, and the northern plains, and is also
one of the nine administrative districts of the island. Although
Quartier-Militaire in fact lays claim to be the main
village at the centre of Mauritius, the district of Moka covers
a vast portion of the island’s central plateau.
However, both the village and the region of Moka
deserve the label “heart of the island”. Their fertile lands
are well suited to the growth of sugar cane, witnessed
by the old chimneys of past factories; to the varieties
of colourful flowers grown in the countless nurseries; to
the vegetables that will be sold on the national markets;
and to the tea plantations which thrive on the cool high
grounds. Moka’s climate is indeed favourable to agriculture,
even if industrial expansion has gradually reduced
the lands under cultivation.
If there is a place where history and modernity coexist,
it is in and around Moka. The Château of Réduit,
state residence since its construction in 1748, is a good
example of both the quality of colonial architecture and
the know-how of the local craftsmen. Through the successive
stages of its history, it has never lost this standing;
the Château of Réduit was the residence of French and
British governors as well as Mauritian Governors-General
from 1972 to 1992 before becoming the President of the
Republic’s official residence.
If the successive governors were never unanimous
about its merits, this magnificent mansion, surrounded
by a vast garden overlooking impressive ravines known
as “The Edge of the World”, has hosted sumptuous receptions,
fancy dress balls, concerts and operas, as well
as prestigious guests such as British Princess Margaret in
1956, Queen Elizabeth in 1972, Indian Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi twice, the President of Senegal Léopold Sedar
Senghor in 1973, Pope John Paul II, South African President
Nelson Mandela in 1998.
Other famous visitors have left their imprint on Moka.
Mahatma Gandhi, during his stay in Mauritius in 1901,

Du café en provenance de la ville portuaire de Moka
au Yémen était planté le long d’une rivière du district
au début du 18ème siècle. Le lien avec le café est donc
fondé, surtout qu’un village dans l’île voisine de La Réunion
et un autre près de Saint-Malo en France portent
le même nom.
Moka aujourd’hui a une double identité. Le nom
désigne, d’une part, un village se déployant au pied
d’une chaîne de montagnes qui la sépare de la capitale,
Port-Louis, et des plaines du Nord. Il désigne, d’autre
part, un des neuf districts administratifs de l’île. Si le village
de Moka ne se situe pas exactement au centre de
Maurice, le district du même nom qui coiffe une large
partie du plateau central de l’île et qui a pour capitale
le village de Quartier-Militaire, qui lui revendique
ce privilège.

Moka le village et Moka le district méritent bien le
label de « cœur de l’île » … Les terres y sont fertiles tant
pour la canne à sucre en général, comme en témoignent
les vieilles cheminées d’usines d’antan, que pour
les fleurs variées et colorées des innombrables pépinières,
que pour les champs de légumes variés vendus
sur les divers marchés, que pour le thé qui tire profit de
la fraîcheur des zones surélevées … Le climat « mokassien
» est particulièrement propice au développement
agricole même si l’expansion industrielle a réduit les surfaces
sous culture.
S’il est un lieu où histoire et modernité se côtoient,
Moka est celui-là. Le Château du Réduit, résidence
d’état dès sa construction en 1748, est un bel exemple
de la qualité de l’architecture coloniale et du savoir-faire
des artisans locaux. Il est toujours resté le centre de la
vie politique de l’île Maurice et les étapes successives

stayed at Camp Samy; Val Ory, hosted two statesmen
exiled because of their sympathies for Hitler in the
1940s. History has also retained the name of Adolphe
de Plevitz, a planter of Prussian origin who lived in Nouvelle
Découverte in the district of Moka. Appalled at
the treatment of Indian indentured labourers, he succeeded
in having a petition to the English monarchy
signed by more than 9,000 workers. Through his efforts,
in 1872, a Royal Commission was established to examine
the workers’ living conditions.
The region of Moka is the heart of tertiary education.
The University of Mauritius, the Mauritius Institute of Education,
the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate and the
former Mauritius College of the Air, recently converted
into the Open University of Mauritius, are all found in
Réduit. In the vicinity of Moka, the Charles Telfair Institute
is a private institution delivering courses from an
Australian university.
Secondary education is also well serviced by three
prestigious schools: the Bocage, where English is the
medium of teaching and the Lycée des Mascareignes
where teaching is aligned on the French system. Moreover,
the Mahatma Gandhi Institute has a three-fold
mission: in addition to its formal secondary school, it has
since 1984 set up its Gandhian Basic School that caters
for primary drop-outs by offering basic and vocational
skills; its tertiary unit houses Faculties of Art, Music as
well as study and research facilities in Eastern and
African cultures.
Moka is also well-known for its health services. The
Moka Eye Hospital is a unique specialised eye hospital

français et britanniques, celle des gouverneurs mauriciens
de 1972 à 1992, et finalement celle du président
de la République.
Même si ses hôtes successifs n’ont pas toujours apprécié
cette résidence somptueuse au milieu d’un vaste
jardin surplombant d’impressionnants ravins baptisés ‘Le
Bout du Monde’, il n’en reste pas moins que le Château
a accueilli des réceptions somptueuses, bals costumés,
concerts et opéras, ainsi que des invités prestigieux tels
la Princesse Margaret en 1956, la Reine Elizabeth en
1972, la Première ministre Indira Gandhi à deux reprises,
le président sénégalais Léopold Sedar Senghor en 1973,
le pape Jean-Paul II en 1989, le président sud-africain
Nelson Mandela en 1998.
D’autres visiteurs illustres ont laissé leur empreinte
à Moka : le Mahatma Gandhi qui, lors de son séjour
mauricien en 1901, séjourna au Camp Samy ; Val Ory
a accueilli dans les années 40, deux chefs d’état en
exil pour leurs sympathies hitlériennes. L’histoire retient
également le nom d’Adolphe de Plevitz, ce planteur
d’origine prussienne de Nouvelle-Découverte dans le
district de Moka. Exaspéré par le traitement infligé aux
travailleurs indiens engagés, il réussit le tour de force de
faire signer une pétition à l’adresse de la monarchie anglaise

tenue en 1872 d’une Commission Royale sur les conditions
de vie de ces derniers.
Moka est également un hub de l’éducation tertiaire
avec, situés à Réduit, le campus de l’Université de
Maurice, le Mauritius Institute of Education, le Mauritius
Examinations Syndicate et l’ex-Mauritius College of the
Air devenu depuis peu l’Open University of Mauritius.

in the country, and its reputation for quality care has
spread beyond our shores. The private Apollo Bramwell
Hospital, equipped with 200 beds, operates with the
latest treatment technologies and the expertise of its
Indian partner Apollo from Chennai. One of the oldest
private clinics in the island – Clinique Mauricienne – is
also located in Réduit.
If modernity means reliable and accessible commercial
centres, the Moka area does not lag behind.
Its new shopping centre in Bagatelle houses stores, hypermarkets,
restaurants, cinemas and a business hotel.
There is also the housing and shopping complex of “Les
Allées d’Helvétia”, and a shopping centre in Saint-Pierre
is nearing completion.
The district of Moka indeed has a green heart! As
you wander from Bois Chéri to La Laura-Malenga or
from Providence to Verdun via Nouvelle Découverte,
the quality of the air prompts you to plunge into surrounding
nature and follow the environment’s rural and
leisurely pace to recharge your batteries.

australienne. L’éducation secondaire n’est
pas en reste avec trois établissements prestigieux : le
Bocage International School dont l’anglais est le medium
d’enseignement et le Lycée des Mascareignes

Moka’s beautiful mansions …
For many reasons, Moka is particularly attractive,
one of them being its fresh and temperate climate. But,
the most important reason was the fact that the governor
lived nearby and it could always be useful to have
such a neighbour. This accounts for the numerous
splendid mansions built in or around Moka.
The only château that could compete with Le Réduit
is the Château Eurêka, one of the island’s widest mansions
with 109 doors and windows. It was built in 1830 by
an Englishman, Mr Carr, whose ambition was to have
the best relations with the Governor in Réduit. Whether
he was successful or not is kept secret.
The property was bought in 1856 by the powerful
and rich Le Clézio family and the governor used to come
from Réduit to Eurêka for friendly visits. King George V,
who was then Duke of York, and his wife were the guests
of a fabulous reception held there on 7 August 1901
after a deer hunting party. Today, the Château Eurêka
houses a museum-restaurant open to the public.
Two splendid houses built on the Régnard property
have entered local history for having hosted two famous
characters against their will: the Shah of Iran Reza Khan
Pahlavi who was exiled by the English in Château Val
Ory between 1941 and 1942 because of his political sympathies
for Hitler and the Prime Minister of Yugoslavia
Milan Stojadinovic who was exiled for the same reasons
from 1941 to 1948.
Some other houses are also still impressive: Château
Trompette, which bears the same name as a famous
château in Bordeaux, Les Quatre Vents, La Carrière,
Surprise.

Moka est particulièrement attrayant pour plusieurs
raisons dont le climat frais et tempéré. Mais une raison
majeure était que le Gouverneur y résidait et en être le
voisin pouvait toujours rendre service … Nombreuses furent,
par conséquent, les splendides demeures cossues
construites à Moka ou dans ses environs.
Le seul château pouvant rivaliser avec celui du
Réduit est bien le Château Eurêka doté de 14 chambres
et de 109 portes et fenêtres, qui en font l’une des
plus vastes résidences de l’île. Il fut construit vers 1830
par un richissime notable anglais du nom de Carr qui
souhaitait s’attirer les bonnes grâces du Gouverneur.
L’histoire ne dit pas s’il arriva à ses fins et, en 1856, la propriété
fut acquise par la famille Le Clézio qui lui donna
le nom d’Eurêka : là, par contre, le Gouverneur britannique
se rendait souvent à pied pour de longs entretiens
amicaux. Le futur roi George V, alors duc d’York, et son
épouse y furent aussi reçus pour une réception grandiose
le 7 août 1901 à l’issue d’une partie de chasse
aux cerfs … Eurêka est aujourd’hui un musée-restaurant
ouvert au public.
Le terrain Régnard à Val Ory comprend deux résidences
somptueuses qui entrèrent toutes deux dans
l’histoire en raison des illustres personnages qui y vécurent
contre leur gré en raison de leurs sympathies
hitlériennes. D’une part, un déporté de grande classe :
l’ancien premier ministre yougoslave de 1935 à 1939,
Milan Stojadinovic, arrivé à Maurice en 1941 jusqu’en
1948. Le deuxième est l’ancien Shah d’Iran, Reza Khan
Pahlavi, qui, avec sa famille, vécut dans une seconde
résidence sur le même site entre 1941 et 1942.
Quelques autres demeures ont conservé leur splendeur
d’antan : le Château Trompette qui reprend le
nom d’un célèbre château bordelais, Les Quatre Vents,
La Carrière, Surprise …

TTireless painter and photographer Pierre Argo
returned to his native land for an exhibition last June at
Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Moka. The Institute’s
School of Fine Arts opened its gallery to the artist as part
of its mission to open to the public and allow its own students
an encounter with famous visual artists.
Forty-eight paintings were on exhibition for the
pleasure of art lovers amid a bustling atmosphere at
the MGI. Experts were eager to rediscover Pierre Argo’s
L’infatigable peintre et photographe, Pierre Argo,
est revenu en terre natale pour une exposition en juin
dernier au Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI), à Moka. Le
département des Beaux-Arts de cette institution a ainsi
ouvert sa galerie d’exposition à l’artiste dans sa double
mission d’offrir au grand public et à ses propres étudiants
une rencontre, voire une confrontation avec des
plasticiens reconnus.
Quarante-huit toiles ont été accrochées pour le plus
grand plaisir des amateurs d’œuvres d’art et ont fait
connaître une certaine effervescence au MGI. Il faut
dire que les connaisseurs avaient hâte de retrouver le
travail de Pierre Argo qui avait exposé pour la dernière

works, which had not been exhibited in Mauritius since
1999. The artist had been preparing this exhibition for
two years in his Parisian studio as he wanted something
special for Mauritius.
Pierre Argo agrees that he “paints to make people
happy”. “My paintings live through them. Buyers sometimes
come back and tell me that time and again they
rediscover new elements in a painting they bought
years ago. This is what seals the bond between a work
of art and its owner.”
However, when he’s in front of a blank canvas, Pierre
assures that he has no preconceptions. “I have neither
topic, nor specific orientation. I start from frames.
My first concern is to affix my claws that will guide my
work. These footprints consist of objects that I find in
my everyday environment: fabrics, bark, tissue paper,
newsprint, shoe soles, etc. Anything is useful to give a
graphic its starting point. And then the dance begins!”

fois à Maurice en 1999. Le plasticien a préparé cette exposition
pendant deux ans dans son atelier parisien. « Je
voulais un projet spécifique pour Maurice. » Il est venu et
il l’a fait ! Pierre Argo dit « peindre pour donner du bonheur
aux gens ». « Mes tableaux vivent avec eux. Les
acheteurs reviennent parfois et m’affirment que régulièrement
ils redécouvrent de nouveaux éléments dans un
tableau qu’ils ont acheté il y a des années. C’est cela
qui crée le lien entre une œuvre et son propriétaire. »
Mais, quand il est face à sa toile blanche, il n’a rien
de tout cela en tête, Pierre. « Je n’ai ni thème, ni direction
précise. Je pars à partir de trames. C’est le souci
pour moi d’apposer mes griffes qui dirigent mon travail.
Ces empreintes sont constituées d’objets du quotidien
que je trouve autour de moi : tissu, écorce, papier de
soie, papier journal, semelles de chaussures, etc. Tout
est bon pour donner un graphisme, son point de départ
… Et puis commence la danse ! » dit-il. Cette danse
où s’installe les mouvements de son pinceau avec les
lignes, les couleurs chaudes, celles plus profondes, les
arabesques mais aussi les signes écrits pour faire entrer
le spectateur dans l’œuvre sans jamais l’emprisonner.
Qu’en est-t-il alors des titres donnés à chaque
tableau de cette exposition ; sont-elles des lignes

also written signs that introduce the viewer to a work of
art without ever imprisoning him.
Does he then give titles to his paintings as guidelines?
“Quite frankly, I would have preferred not to give
titles to my paintings as they may act as blinkers for the
person who looks at the work of art. But, ironically, it is important
to give a hint to people who prefer to have this
stepping stone to get into the painting.“
Pierre asserts his freedom and “non-membership
of any specific artistic trend”. “I belong to myself, with
my own inner system.” His paintings exude this freedom
that gives his exhibition freshness, spontaneity and
force, which are undoubtedly the fruits of his many trips
around the world and the resulting encounters.

directrices ? « A vrai dire, j’aurais préféré ne pas proposer
de titre pour mes tableaux car il y a le risque de
poser des œillères à celui qui est en face de l’œuvre.
Mais paradoxalement, il est important de donner un indice
pour les non-initiés. Les gens aiment mieux avoir ce
tremplin pour se projeter dans le tableau. »
Sa peinture transpire de cette liberté qu’il revendique
en restituant dans cette collection présentée
beaucoup de fraîcheur, de spontanéité et de force qui
est sans doute le fruit de ses mille et un voyages au carrefour
du monde et des rencontres qu’ils ont provoqués.

Jazz Festival
A great jazz event and first of its kind in Mauritius,
the Ernest Wiehe Jazz Festival from 11 to 13 October 2012
will bring together international and Mauritian artists
in a tribute to Ernest Wiehe, one of the great Mauritian
musicians.
Public concerts, projections, meetings and training
sessions will take place in various locations around the
island. One of the best moments for the Mauritian public
will surely be an evening with the duo formed by French
pianist Manuel Rocheman and Linley Marthe, the jazz
bass player with an instinctive and powerful musical

Maurice, le Ernest Wiehe Jazz Festival se tiendra du 11
au 13 octobre 2012, réunissant des artistes mauriciens et
internationaux. Ce festival est dédié à Ernest Wiehe, un
des plus grands musiciens que le pays ait connu.
Les concerts publics, projections, rencontres et formations
se tiendront dans plusieurs lieux à travers l’île.
Une des plus belles surprises sera pour le public mauricien
de découvrir le duo formé par le pianiste français,
Manuel Rocheman, et Linley Marthe, bassiste au jeu instinctif
et puissant. Ce fils du sol évolue depuis plusieurs
années au niveau du jazz européen, dont de nombreux
festivals et trois ans avec le géant et regretté Joe
Zawinul. Linley fait figure de vraie star auprès des jeunes
musiciens mauriciens.

Saxophoniste génial, compositeur, arrangeur, Ernest
Wiehe a enseigné la musique au Berklee College of
Music de Boston jusqu’en 1978 tout en dirigeant un orchestre
de 17 musiciens. De retour à Maurice, il a communiqué
sa passion du jazz aux musiciens de l’île et a

him to exceptional development of the jazz platform
in Mauritius”.
A brilliant saxophonist, composer and arranger,
Ernest Wiehe taught music at Berklee College of Music
in Boston until 1978, while also leading a band of 17
musicians. When he came back to Mauritius, he communicated
his passion for jazz to local fellow musicians
and was great at detecting young talent. From the Port
Louis suburbs and from his home in Mapou, Ernest acted
as a true mentor, guiding young fans wholeheartedly
and sincerely. Even if he left us too soon in 2010, his spirit
continues to inspire musicians and permeate the jazz
world in Mauritius.
Among other artists at this festival, organised by
Hotel Tamarin and “Stubborn in Dreams”, the public
will hear Benoît Sauvé’s virtuosity and musicality as one
of the few jazz recorder players, the magic harmonica
of Olivier Ker Ourio, whose music combines beautiful
themes and subtle arrangements, and French jazzman
and saxophonist Francois Jeanneau who has been
invited by the festival to lead the historical Ernest
Wiehe Quartet, with Linley Marthe, Bellingo Faro and
Christophe Bertin.

TTraditions do not always stand the test of time, but
this is not the case with the new St Regis resort in Le
Morne, where nothing has been left to chance. Luxury
and refinement have always been the master words of
the brand since John Jacob Astor IV built the legendary

du temps. Mais au St Régis au Morne, rien n’a été laissé
au hasard. Le luxe et le raffinement ont toujours été les
maîtres mots de la marque depuis le légendaire New
York St Regis fondé il y a plus d’un siècle par John Jacob
Astor IV.
Ses rituels sont devenus des traditions incontournables
: le sabrage du champagne, le ‘Midnight Supper’
sans oublier ‘La Belle Créole Mary’, version mauricienne

foreign produce and local delicacies in a refined
presentation is served in the intimate but luxurious setting
of an authentic dining room,” remarks Olivier Belliard.
As the main dining venue, overlooking the swimming
pool, the beach and the Tea Garden, Le Manoir Dining
Room reveals meaningful gastronomic traditions of the
island. Meat-lovers will have difficulty choosing between
the “Pan-seared Angus prime fillet, celeriac and local
brede, red wine sauce salmis style” and the “Braised
heart of palm, Paimpol beans moussseline, Chorizo
and Rougail sauce” or the “Roasted grain–fed chicken

The most discerning guests will choose the chef’s
table at the restaurant Inspiration, the smallest and

OOne of the features of Mauritius that best embodies
its diversity is its cuisine. A heritage of its complex past,
local fare includes some essential delicacies, of which
rougaille is one. This spicy sauce is made from pommes
d’amour, a local variety of tomato chopped finely and
simmered with minced onions, parsley, thyme, garlic,
ginger and chilli to taste. It enhances the flavour of all
meat, fish and vegetables; it accompanies boiled rice,
vegetables or pulses as well as rotis and dholpuris (Indian
pancakes), so it is a must in Mauritian daily meals.
Its origin is quite difficult to trace. It could be derived
from the Tamil dish ourougaille, a mix of finely chopped
vegetables and fruits, prepared in Réunion Island. Others
say it’s an offshoot of outokaye, a hot chilli Malagasy
sauce.
Head chef Noël Chelvan, now consultant at La Clef
des Champs restaurant, believes that the word rougaille
comes from the French roux d’ail (garlic roux).
“It’s a component of bouillabaisse, an authentic French
dish.” But how did it make its way to India and the Indian
Ocean? Could it be from Pondicherry, the former French
colony? How has it become so ingrained in Creole and
Asian cuisine?
He sadly notes that the cooking method has greatly
changed with time. “When I was a boy, my mother cooked
her rougaille in an iron pot on a wood fire; it simmered
slowly so that the pomme d’amour released its flavour,”
explains Noel Chelvan with a touch of nostalgia.
He deplores today’s cooking in aluminium pots
over high heat, which alters the delicate flavour of the
pomme d’amour. With the traditional rougaille gradually
fading from our kitchens, the head chef fears that his
grandchildren may never taste the “loved” flavour of an
authentic rougaille.

pluralité est bien sa cuisine. Héritage d’un passé complexe,
la gastronomie locale a son petit lot de « protégés »,
dont la rougaille. Cette sauce épicée est à base de
« pommes d’amour », une variété de tomate, mijotée
avec des oignons, des herbes, de l’ail, du gingembre
et une pointe de piment. Elle agrémente toutes les
viandes, poissons, et légumes ; accompagne le riz
blanc, les légumes ou grains secs, sans compter les
rotis et dholl puris indiens car elle est indissociable de
la cuisine mauricienne.
Ses origines restent toutefois difficiles à cerner. Elle
serait apparentée au plat tamoul « ourougaille », mélange
de légumes et fruits coupés menu tel que préparé
à la Réunion. D’autres soutiennent que son origine est
l’ « outokaye », sauce pimentée d’origine malgache.
Noël Chelvan, chef cuisinier, aujourd’hui consultant
au restaurant la Clef des Champs, soutient lui que
le mot « rougaille » viendrait du français, « roux d’ail ».
« C’est un composant de la bouillabaisse, plat typiquement
français. » La question qu’il se pose tourne autour
de l’odyssée du plat vers l’Inde et l’océan Indien. Seraitce
par Pondichéry, ancienne colonie française ?
Comment ce plat s’est-il intégré aux cuisines créole et
asiatique?
Il note avec regret que la méthode de cuisson a été
altérée au fil du temps. « Quand j’étais gosse, ma mère
cuisinait la rougaille dans un récipient en fer, sur un feu
de bois et la cuisson était lente, pour que la pomme
d’amour dégage sa saveur sans perdre son goût, »
raconte Noël Chelvan avec un brin de nostalgie.
Il déplore l’utilisation aujourd’hui de marmites en
aluminium et la cuisson à feu vif. Celle-ci dénature la
pomme d’amour qui est un légume fragile. La traditionnelle
rougaille s’efface peu à peu de notre cuisine ; le
chef cuisinier craint que ses petits-enfants ne connaissent
jamais la saveur d’une vraie rougaille …

NNature’s beauty is often hidden. Cradled between
the Savanne mountain range and the forests of the
South of Mauritius, the Valley of Colours at Chamouny
is no different. Exuding tranquility and serenity, it hides
more secrets than one could ever guess. A feast for the
eyes and the other senses, this natural haven will arouse
the curiosity of both tropical flora lovers and those looking
for excitement and adventure.
La beauté de la nature aime à se cacher. Blottie entre
la chaîne de montagnes de Savanne et les forêts du Sud,
le parc naturel de la Vallée des couleurs à Chamouny
respire le calme et la sérénité. Exploitée depuis quelques
années, elle a plus d’un secret à révéler. A la fois merveille
pour les yeux et éveil pour les sens, cette œuvre de
la nature saura satisfaire tant les amateurs de flore endémique
que ceux à la recherche de sensations fortes.

After an hour’s drive from the centre of the island,
you approach the sanctuary through intricate paths.
The change of scenery is breathtaking: as far as the eye
can see, the greenery plunges towards the turquoise
ocean on the horizon. A smooth breeze subtly fills your
lungs, giving you a blissful sense of well-being.
At the reception desk, marketing manager Ayesha
Polin greets us and explains the different ways of exploring
the valley: “Either in a four-wheel drive vehicle
driven by a guide, or a crazy spin on a quad bike, or just
on foot.” The more adventurous can fly over the park
along one-kilometre zip lines, the longest in the Indian
Ocean islands.
However, the most impressive feature of the trip remains
the 23 coloured earths. This unique phenomenon
results from climatic and atmospheric conditions over
volcanic ashes millions of years ago.

Dès lors, le dépaysement est total : de la verdure
à perte de vue, se mêlant au loin au bleu turquoise de
l’océan. Un air doux et frais envahit lentement vos narines
laissant naître une quiétude sans pareil.
Une fois au parc, la responsable du marketing,
Ayesha Polin, nous accueille et nous propose différentes
options : visite de la vallée en tout-terrain, randonnée à
pied ou folle escapade en Quad Bike. Les plus braves
peuvent survoler le parc en tyrolienne d’environ un kilomètre,
la plus longue de l’océan Indien.
Le clou de l’excursion reste toutefois l’unique terre
de 23 couleurs. Un impressionnant phénomène naturel
résultant des conditions atmosphériques et climatiques
sur les cendres volcaniques vieilles de milliers d’années.
J’opte pour la traditionnelle marche à pied, sans
guide, afin de me perdre totalement dans l’immensité
de cette vallée. A peine sorti du centre d’accueil,
j’aperçois, d’un pont suspendu, une des nombreuses

bridge, one of the many waterfalls in
the region catches my eye. The scenery
seems straight out of a novel by JRR
Tolkien: majestic centuries-old endemic
trees covered with moss emerge from
various ferns.
After following a marked trail, I find
myself facing the famous Vacoas Waterfall.
The soft humming of this endless flow
of water adds to the moment’s hypnotic
fantasy. Emerging from my trance, I find
my way towards the coloured earths.

Sortant de ce moment de transe, je
me dirige vers le monticule de terre de
23 couleurs. De loin, ce site ressemble à
une œuvre abstraite : un tableau sur lequel
un pastelliste aurait superposé des
couches de couleurs chaudes … Un véritable
régal pour les yeux.
Ma dernière escale est la ‘colline
d’Isaac’, le point culminant de la vallée.
Ce lieu offre une vue imprenable sur le
sud de l’île. En regardant vers le bas, je

My last stop is on Mount Isaac: the highest point in
the valley unveils the coast from a unique perspective.
Looking down, I easily retrace my steps through the valley
while enjoying a panoramic view over the south of
the island. Other visitors, coming down from the zip line,
join me to share this exhilarating view.
As the sun plunges towards the horizon, it’s time to
leave. I walk back towards the reception hall, passing
animal sheds and their various inmates. The last one
houses peacocks. The turquoise plumage of the only
male bird reminds me of my last view from the top of the
hill. It is like a poem that this valley will whisper in my ear,
when I return.

peux retracer la totalité de la randonnée parcourue
tout en admirant l’étendue du parc d’une différente
perspective. D’autres visiteurs me rejoignent, arrivant,
eux, en tyrolienne.
La descente du soleil vers l’horizon nous annonce
que la visite tire à sa fin. Je passe devant une série d’enclos
abritant divers animaux avant de terminer devant
des paons. Le mâle, dans son habit bleu turquoise, me
rappelle par son plumage ma dernière vision du haut
de la colline. Une poésie que seule cette vallée saura
me chuchoter lors d’une prochaine visite.

MMusic is one of the cultural facets that reflect the
soul of a nation. In Rodrigues, music lives on through its
duality: traditional music reflects the people’s commitment
to their roots, while contemporary songs express
their deep attachment to their small island.
The sounds of an accordion, a drum (here called
tambour) and a triangle escape from a small house in
Citron Donis. It’s time for the dancing lesson taught by
Lucrèce Prosper, whom everyone affectionately calls
Tante Zelle (Auntie Zelle), one the most experienced artists
in traditional Rodriguan music. With the group “Camaron”,
which she formed with her late husband, she
has taken Rodriguan music to several festivals in Europe.
Her fellow artist, Tino Samoisy, still runs a group that plays
traditional “accordion sega”, which blends two different
musical legacies.

La musique est une des facettes culturelles reflétant
l’âme d’un peuple. A Rodrigues, elle s’exprime en dualité
: la musique traditionnelle traduit le lien du peuple
avec ses racines et celle plus actuelle raconte l’attachement
profond des Rodriguais à leur petite île.
A Citron Donis, sur le seuil d’une maisonnette, retentissent
les accents d’un accordéon, d’une ravanne
(ici appelé tambour) et d’un triangle. C’est l’heure
du cours donné aux jeunes par Lucrèce Prosper, que
tous connaissent affectueusement comme Tante Zelle,
doyenne de la tradition musicale rodriguaise. Avec
son groupe « Les Camarons » formé du temps de son
époux, elle a porté la musique rodriguaise jusque dans
les festivals en Europe. Tout comme son contemporain
Tino Samoisy qui dirige toujours une troupe traditionnelle
de séga accordéon, symbiose de deux héritages
musicaux.
La musique traditionnelle rodriguaise repose en
effet sur deux composantes. La première, d’origine
européenne, se désigne comme la danse accordéon,

Rodriguan traditional music is indeed based on several
components. The first, of European origin, is known
as the accordion dance, the main instrument, obviously,
the diatonic accordion. This instrument was apparently
brought by French settlers and quickly adopted by African
and Malagasy slaves. Over time, the music has adopted
typical Rodriguan tonalities, but is always associated with
choreography inspired by old European dances. Thus at
village balls one can still see gentlemen handing their
handkerchiefs in the old-fashioned way to invite a lady
for a polka bébé (baby polka), a Mazok (derived from the
Mazurka), a Cotis (Scottish) or a Val (Waltz).

par les colons français, a été vite adopté par les esclaves
malgaches et africains. Au fil du temps, cette musique
a pris des sonorités rodriguaises propres. Mais elle
reste toutefois indissociable de chorégraphies inspirées
d’anciennes danses européennes. Ainsi, il arrive encore
dans certains bals que les messieurs, mouchoirs en
main selon la manière à l’ancienne, invitent une cavalière
pour danser une Polka bébé, une Mazok (dérivée
de la mazurka), une Cotis (Scottish) ou encore une
Val (valse).
Autre facette de la musique rodriguaise, le séga
tambour, hérité de la tradition africaine, se décline sur
un rythme très rapide. Ici, le battement mène le pas sur
le texte constitué de phrases chantées par un soliste et

Another facet of Rodriguan music is the sega tambour
(drum sega), inherited from an African tradition,
danced at quite a fast beat with words sung by a soloist
and then chanted by the audience. The drum, warmed
on the fire before each song, provides the beat for the
singing and dancing.
In the Rodriguan tradition, sega tambour is also
a way for people to settle their scores and differences.
“When I disagree with another person, I express my
thoughts by singing. That person in turn replies with his or
her own song,” explains Tante Zelle before immediately
improvising a few brilliant and witty lines about our visit.

The younger generation also uses modern
instruments to write their own songs, but these all
reflect an endearing Rodriguan theme, whether
romantic or a focus on social issues.

Dans la tradition rodriguaise, le séga tambour est
aussi le moyen trouvé par la population pour régler les
comptes et divergences. « Quand je ne suis pas d’accord
avec une autre personne, je dis ce que je pense
par la chanson. Cette personne à son tour me répond
par d’autres phrases chantées. Mo compose li, li compose
moi (je la compose, elle me compose) », explique
Tante Zelle qui improvise immédiatement quelques
lignes à propos de notre visite, sur un ton fort taquin.
Tante Zelle évoque aussi la tradition du Bal ran zariko
qui raconte les différents épisodes de la culture du haricot
dans l’île, des semailles jusqu’à la récolte. Cette expérience
se vivait en communauté et, selon la tradition

used to be a community one and, following the
tradition of singing dialogues, the show often became a
friendly contest between male and female performers.
Today, Tante Zelle does her best to teach this tradition to
the younger generation.
Accordion sega is a blend of sega tambour and accordion,
which is still played at traditional parties. The younger
generation also uses modern instruments to write their
own songs, but these all reflect an endearing Rodriguan
theme, whether romantic or a focus on social issues.

concours amical entre les hommes et les femmes interprètes.
Aujourd’hui, Tante Zelle fait de son mieux pour
l’enseigner aux plus jeunes.
Le mariage du séga tambour et de l’accordéon a
donné le séga accordéon que l’on peut encore entendre
dans certaines soirées. Mais la jeune génération
compose également avec les moyens actuels. Et les
textes traduisent une thématique rodriguaise attachante,
tant dans la chanson romantique que celle à message
social.
« Tous les Rodriguais sont un peu artistes. Dans chaque
famille, il y a au moins un musicien, un chanteur
ou un adepte de danse traditionnelle », souligne Doyal
Edouard, chanteur local qui a signé plusieurs albums.
« Notre défi, c’est de préserver la tradition tout en donnant
plus de moyens à la génération actuelle pour se

“All Rodriguans have some artistic talent. In every
family, there is a musician, a singer or a traditional
dancer,” says Doyal Edouard, a local singer who has
produced several music albums. “Our challenge is to
preserve tradition while giving more opportunities to the
present generation. We must always include traditional
music in cultural events. It is equally important to provide
younger musicians with more opportunities,” he adds.
His views are shared by Tino Samoisy, who uses all
avenues to promote Rodriguan music abroad. As one
of the first local artists to produce singles and then cassettes,
Tino considers music as a family heritage and upholds
tradition with his chanting in a typical Rodriguan
accent. At present he leads a band that performs at
the island’s hotels, with a repertoire that combines traditional
instruments – sega tambour and accordion – with
modern sounds. Tino has even added an instrument of
his own invention: a sharpened bamboo stem that produces
three different sounds.

produire. Il est important que, dans chaque manifestation
culturelle, on garde une place pour une troupe
traditionnelle et il est tout aussi essentiel de fournir aux
musiciens actuels plus d’opportunités », ajoute-t-il.
Cet avis est partagé par Tino Samoisy qui cherche
tous les moyens de promouvoir la musique Rodriguaise
sous d’autres cieux. Un des premiers artistes locaux à
sortir des 45 tours, puis des cassettes, Tino vit la musique
comme un héritage familial et garde la tradition vivace
rien que par son accent chantant, si typique du parler
rodriguais. Aujourd’hui, il dirige une troupe qui se produit
dans les hôtels de l’île, avec un répertoire qui marie
les instruments traditionnels – séga tambour et accordéon
– aux sonorités modernes. Tino y a même ajouté
un instrument de son invention : un bambou taillé qui
produit trois sons différents.
Tino est d’avis que, pour assurer la relève par les jeunes
artistes, il faudrait trouver une plateforme élargie,
dans les îles voisines par exemple, dans les festivals locaux
ou régionaux, ou encore dans les compilations
proposées sur les vols des compagnies aériennes. Toutes
les plateformes sont bonnes à prendre quand il s’agit
de promouvoir une musique qui vient du cœur.

by young artists, a broader platform should be
found; for example, in the neighbouring islands, at local
and regional festivals, or in music compilations offered
by airlines in their in-flight entertainment programme. All
available platforms should be used to promote music
that comes right from the heart.
“Our group always gets a warm welcome because
we reproduce the art of our grandparents, to which we
have added our own contribution. The best music is spontaneous
and improvised according to the circumstances
and set-up. It’s lively and appeals to everyone,” he says.

For around five Euros per session, movies still remain
accessible to most people, and Cinema Star
participates in several initiatives with the help of nongovernment
organisations to make cinema accessible
to the underprivileged. It also promotes films and documentaries
from local filmmakers and offers gala
evenings dedicated to widescreen shows of musicals,
operas or concerts featuring famous artists. The management
is currently working out special packages for
young people and senior viewers.
It should be noted that Cinema Star will soon open
five new theatres with even higher standards in the

AAgreenculture started its operation in Mauritius in
2008 with a herd of 600 cows, and within four years, it
has become the leader in milk production across Indian
Ocean countries. So what is this farm’s secret, which
arouses the envy of its competitors?
Located at Salazie in the centre of the island,
Agreenculture lies in lush vegetation and is swept by a
cool breeze. Following an invitation from the manager,
Michael Sauzier, we arrive there at dawn, in time for the
first milking at 6 am.

Quel est donc son secret ?
Située à Salazie au centre de l’ile, Agreenculture a
tous les atouts pour plaire, et pas seulement aux vaches
laitières : une végétation omniprésente, aucun signe de
civilisation aux alentours, le tout accompagné d’une
brise légère, porteuse de pureté et de fraicheur. A l’invitation
du responsable de la ferme, Michel Sauzier, nous
y sommes dès l’aube, car la première traite est effectuée
à six heures.

“We produce 6,000 litres of milk daily and we must
begin operations early so that each of our 1,034 cows
plays its part,” says Michel Sauzier. The cows are milked
twice daily, with nine hours between each milking. The
milk is processed and pasteurised in three cylindrical
machines placed in a large isolation chamber.
Michel Sauzier’s love for his ruminants is tangible. It
is with great enthusiasm and pride that he introduces
us to the latest newborn on the farm, Erici. Although
already a sturdy fellow, the calf is still bottle-fed – the
farm’s other residents are fed daily with some 17 tons of
sugar cane, which are processed on site in a mechanical
grinder. With its 48 employees, Agreenculture can
be proud of its success. It is the main supplier to Maurilait
Production Ltée, as well as local cheese producers.

« Nous produisons 6,000 litres de lait par jour et nous
commençons nos opérations très tôt afin que chacune
des 1,034 vaches y apporte sa contribution », dit en
souriant Michel Sauzier. Il précise que la traite se fait
deux fois par jour à neuf heures d’intervalle. Le reste du
temps, les vaches profitent des verts pâturages et de
la paix de leur enclos. Le lait est traité et pasteurisé sur
place par trois machines cylindriques placées dans une
grande pièce isolée et abritée.
L’amour de Michel Sauzier pour ses ruminants est
palpable. C’est plein d’enthousiasme et de fierté qu’il
nous présente Erici, le dernier-né de la ferme. Déjà un
robuste gaillard, le veau est toutefois toujours nourri au
biberon. Les résidents de la ferme sont nourris chaque
jour avec environ 17 tonnes de canne à sucre préparées
grâce à un broyeur installé sur la ferme. Avec ses 48
employés, Agreenculture peut être fier de son parcours.
Il est le principal fournisseur de la société Maurilait et
des producteurs locaux de fromage.

BBefore even setting foot on Mauritian soil, well before
beach, sand and sun come to mind, the question of
what to wear troubles any newcomer to the island. How
to dress without looking out of place remains a major
issue. If there’s one big surprise that the visitor does not
expect, it is the availability of major designer labels.

the Mauritian sun with a smile and often a discount that

DDelicately nestled in Moka, “La Vallée des Fleurs” is
as colourful as a postcard. Multicoloured seasonal flowers,
of bright or pastel tones, adorn this green patch.
Each flower has its story, and floral art holds no secrets
for Brinda Seenauth, who for 22 years has managed the
family business at “La Vallée des Fleurs” with due respect
for the environment and the seasons.
“Moka has an ideal temperature, as fresh air gives
quality flowers,” affirms the florist. The flowers are at the
heart of her concerns in both summer and winter. “The
best flowers are gathered in summer, but we get flowers
from Malaysia in winter to enhance our bouquets,”
explains Brinda.
Green fingers are a recipe for success, but looking
after a flower plantation is an art that must be learned.
“A plant needs the same care as a child. You must be
attentive to its needs. Too much water can kill it, too little

Depuis quatre générations, les fleurs ont toujours
été au cœur des affaires à La Vallée des Fleurs dans le
respect de l’environnement et des saisons. « A Moka, la
température est idéale et l’air frais donne des fleurs de
qualité », affirme la maîtresse des lieux. En été comme
en hiver, les fleurs font son bonheur. « Les meilleures
fleurs sont cueillies en été ; en hiver, nous achetons des
fleurs de la Malaisie pour agrémenter nos bouquets »,
explique Brinda Seenauth.
Avoir la main verte est un atout qui assure le succès
mais l’art de s’occuper d’une plantation de fleurs s’apprend.
« Il faut s’occuper d’une plante comme d’un
enfant. Etre attentif à ses besoins. Trop d’eau peut la
tuer, trop peu également. Idem pour les pesticides »,

also. It’s the same with pesticides,” states the florist. This
care has been behind her success over so many years.
The Vallée des Fleurs has a florist shop a few hundred
metres from the plantation on Bois Chéri Road, where
Brinda warmly welcomes customers who choose or
order bouquets for all major events – weddings, funerals,
or the birth of babies.
With her magic touch, the florist brings an original
tone to each bouquet. “A bunch of flowers touches the
heart and presentation is most important, as is every single
detail.” With her knowledge of plants and passion for
the trade, she is considering new avenues for her flourishing
business. But she wants above all to transmit her
passion to her two sons so as to perpetuate the family tradition
and keep a flowering garden for a long time yet.

souligne la directrice. Voilà les recettes du succès
depuis tant d’années.
La Vallée des Fleurs a ouvert sa boutique de fleuriste
à quelques centaines de mètres de la plantation à Bois
Chéri Road. Brinda Seenauth y reçoit chaleureusement
les clients depuis deux ans. Les bouquets qui peuvent
être choisis et commandés sur place, sont adaptés
aux différents événements – mariage, enterrement ou
naissance …
Brinda Seenauth apporte une touche inédite à chacune
des œuvres réalisées avec des doigts de fée. « Un
bouquet de fleurs attendrit le cœur et la présentation
en assure l’effet. D’où l’importance de chaque détail.
» Sensible à l’origine des végétaux et passionnée
par son métier, la directrice envisage d’autres innovations
à son entreprise florissante. Mais elle veut surtout
transmettre à ses deux fils son amour des plantes pour
perpétuer la tradition familiale et fleurir le jardin pour
encore longtemps.

Fabienne. Voyage de celle-ci
vers Maurice pour ne pas perdre
Sunil. Voyage enfin sans quitter le village, de Lalita, la
mère, à travers le récit d’Anand. « J’ai voulu décrire certains
effets pervers de l’intégration », écrit l’auteur dans
son avant-propos. « Qu’on se convertisse à une religion,
qu’on adhère à un autre mode de vie ou société, il y a
toujours le danger d’en faire trop... » Son analyse pertinente
et son écriture fluide et simple, fait de ce livre une
lecture agréable et riche émotionnellement.
Monique Koenig’s novel reveals how difficult it can be
to become culturally integrated into a different social
environment. As she says in her preface: “Whether in
converting to another religion or in adopting another
way of life or another society, there is always the danger
of doing too much, of wanting to be cut from the
same cloth and ending in the loss of one’s native culture”.
This book is easy to read and directly addresses
one’s emotions.

Mauritian singer composer, Alain Ramasinum, will give
a live concert ‘Sega in Mahebourg’ with the Ravanna
group and guest singers Laura Beg, Ino Nakeed, Didier
Clarel and Bruno Mooken. Besides, he will share the
stage with Negro pou la vi, Désiré Francois, Nitin Chinien
and Indian Ocean artists at the proverbial Zenith in Paris
on 3 November from 11.30 p.m. till dawn.

INDIAN OCEAN TRIATHLON

The Indian Ocean Triathlon, organized by VO2maxvoyages
and Lux Island Resorts Events, with the support
of the Mauritian Triathlon Federation, includes
1,800 m swimming in Le Morne, 55 km biking and 12
km running between Chemin Grenier and Le Morne.
Le « Indian Ocean Triathlon », organisé par VO-
2maxvoyages et Lux Island Resorts Events en collaboration
avec la Fédération mauricienne de Triathlon,
inclut 1,8km de natation au Morne, 55 km de vélo et
12 km de course à pied entre Chemin-Grenier et Le
Morne.
Corrigendum – Confluences 2012
in Issue 68 of Islander
“The International Book Show – Confluences – will
be held in March 2013 as part of the festivities to
commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Independence
of Mauritius instead of September 2012.
This book show will be the keynote event of the
National Day celebrations. During the whole month
of March, the Mauritian population will be invited
to celebrate the various cultures, which constitute
its identity. The International Book Show, around the
chosen theme – Confluences – will be the focus of
this month of cultural encounters and discoveries.”
The first International Book Show was organised by
Immedia media agency from 1 to 4 September
2000, and Confluences is thus not the first such
event in Mauritius.

Hand luggage
Hand luggage must be stowed either in the overhead bins or under
the seat in front of you. Please be careful of falling objects while
opening the overhead bins.
Safety
You are kindly requested to direct your attention to the safety
demonstrations prior to each take-off. The seat belt must be
fastened for take-off, landing and when “Fasten Seat Belts” sign
is switched on during the fl ight. When using a blanket during the
night, kindly ensure your seat belt is visible for cabin crew checks. As
a safety precaution, in case of turbulence, we would recommend
that you keep your seat belt loosely fastened throughout the fl ight.
It is strictly prohibited to lie down or sleep on the fl oor. For each
take-off and landing, kindly ensure that the back of your seat is
in the upright position, the armrests are down, the tray table, your
handset (A340/330), your footrest and your individual screen (A340/
A330) in front of you are properly stowed.
Non-smoking
You are reminded that smoking is strictly forbidden anywhere on
the aircraft, including the toilets and throughout the fl ight. Failure
to comply with the “No Smoking” ban will be reported to the
authorities on arrival and is liable to fi nes or prosecution.
Pillows and blankets
These are available on all long haul and night flights.
In-flight entertainment
We provide an international selection of movies and music. Headsets
will be distributed by the cabin crew and will be collected prior
to landing.

taxiing, initial climb, approach and landing,
all PEDs (except those with unrestricted

available. Baby food and children menus are also available. Kindly

On-board telephone (A340/A330)
The handset located in the armrest of your seat features an “inseat”
telephone facility which allows you to make “Air-to Ground”
calls. Additionally, a cordless telephone may also be requested.
Special meals
As a general rule, beef / veal / pork, and all products derived from
these, will not be supplied on our fl ights. Alcohol will not be used
in the cooking methods / products. Special meals, to conform to
medical or religious requirements, can be ordered by passengers
who are not able to partake of the standard featured menu.
Only special meals listed on our Website www.airmauritius.com
can be ordered. These are in accordance with IATA Standards and
Codes. Any complement of information may be obtained from
Air Mauritius Offi ces, our ticketing counters or your Travel Agency.
It is recommended that your special meal request is made at
time of booking for your fl ight. Forty eight hours is the minimum
advanced notice required by the caterers to ensure that your
meal order is catered accordingly. Air Mauritius cannot guarantee
a food allergy free environment on board its fl ights, including
peanut allergy. Air Mauritius shall use its best endeavour to
provide special meals ordered as per laid down procedures.
Air Mauritius shall not be liable towards any travel agent in any
way whatsoever, in case any special meal duly ordered is
unavailable on any of its fl ights.

for Air Mauritius. Consequently, we wish to draw
your attention to some medical issues related to
long flights.
Passengers already suffering from circulatory
conditions are particularly of concern to us.
Air Mauritius and Eruption Studio have partnered
to produce an informative film to explain precautions
to be taken as well as some simple exercises which
can be performed on board.
However, please bear in mind that the advice
contained in the film is not intended to be medical
treatment. It cannot in any way replace your medical
treatment as prescribed by your doctor.
Practical recommendations
1. Avoid sitting still in your seat for long periods.
Perform the physical movements recommended.
2. Breathe deeply and slowly.
3. Rehydrate yourself, preferably, by drinking plain
water.
4. Excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks is
proscribed, particularly for persons already suffering
from a blood circulation condition.
5. Wearing specialised flight socks can help to
alleviate circulatory problems.
