be conducted by an ABPN-certified
psychiatrist, and at least two of the
evaluations must be conducted by
different ABPN-certified psychiatrists.
38

In-Residency Evaluation Process
Evaluations must be completed on ABPNapproved
forms.
In lieu of using the clinical skills evaluation
forms posted on the ABPN website,
psychiatry (and CAP) residency programs
may submit forms to the ABPN for
approval.
 Programs may add additional competency
components/items to the form.
39

Verification of In-Residency
Evaluations
For credentialing purposes, the ABPN will
Training must be completed at no less than
½ time.
Two of three years of residency training,
excluding PGY-1, MUST be spent in a single
program except when approved by ABPN*.
42

Other ABPN Requirements
Credit is not granted for less than one-year
blocks of training except when approved by
ABPN*.
Residency training must be completed in no
more than two blocks. If completed in two
blocks, the blocks must not be more than 5
years apart and the shorter block must not
be less than six months long.
43

Other ABPN Requirements
One year of subspecialty residency training
must be completed in a continuous block at
not less than ½ time.
Leave or vacation time may not be utilized
to reduce total amount of required training
or to make up deficiencies in training.
44

*Exceptions
Exceptions are considered on an individual
basis.
Program director of first program sends
letter to program director of second
program detailing the training completed
and areas of training that are deficient
(see sample letter A).
 Program director of second program
informs resident whether he/she will be
able to provide resident with experience
necessary to remove deficits.
45

*Exceptions
 Program director of second program
submits proposal to ABPN office detailing
training to be completed in their program
and includes letter from first program
director.
In the future, we hope to see this worked
out through PreCert.
46

Sample Letter A
(Should be used when a resident
transfers between training programs or
may be used to verify completion of
training.)
Sample Letter B
(Should be used to verify successful
completion of training.)
47

PreCert
Letters to ABPN are being replaced.
PreCert system – Programs enter resident
information into the system.
Both the program director and the
resident may view the information.
Residents can change demographic
information. However, only the program
director can make changes to the training
data.
48

PreCert
PD will be able to send info regarding
transferring resident to other PDs and to
ABPN.
System will keep track of rotations
completed and clinical skills completed.
Only those residents who have been
entered into this system will be able to
apply for the 2012 Certification
Examination online.
49

Canadian Training
Graduates of programs accredited by the
RCPSC may apply and sit for ABPN
examinations ONLY if they:
Have completed all training in a RCPSCaccredited
program.
 Are certified by the RCPSC.
 Possess an unrestricted license to
practice medicine in a Canadian
province.
 ABPN does not recognize partial
Canadian training.
50

Combined Training
 While the ABPN currently approves
programs to offer combined training, we
are not approving new combined programs
at this time.
ABPN is concerned with these programs as
there are some states that seem reluctant
to grant licenses to graduates from these
training programs as they are not ACGMEaccredited.
 Peds-Portal programs are accredited by
ACGME.
51
