1,252 Graduates Join the FSU Alumni Association
celebrating the class of 2012
Thousands gathered at Framingham State University
on a beautiful sunny day in spring to celebrate the
Class of 2012. The theme for commencement was:
“Food, Hunger and Nutrition.”
Undergraduate commencement speaker Catherine
D’Amato, president and CEO of the Greater Boston
Food Bank, encouraged the students to lead
charitable lives.
“Do for others in whatever way fits you best,” said
D’Amato, whose organization provides more than 31
million pounds of food each year to local pantries.
“Give your time, give your money, give your talent.
No gift is too small.”

The University conferred an honorary Doctor of
Humane Letters upon D’Amato and Carolyn Mugar,
executive director of Farm Aid, who accepted on
behalf of the organization.
During the graduate ceremony, commencement
speaker Dr. Patricia Luoto, director of FSU’s John C.
Stalker Institute of Food and Nutrition, encouraged
the students to develop their character, give back
to others and never forget where they came from.
The University presented Citizen Laureate awards to
Paul Mina, president and CPO of the United Way
of Tri-County, and Katie Millett, executive director
of the Office of Nutrition, Health and Safety Programs
at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education.
