Case Study
Riverside Resource Recovery Facility
Location: South Bank of River Thames, Belvedere
The RRR Facility is an energy recovery plant planned as an alternative to a
landfill site. The facility is a river-served recovery plant with waste delivered
by barges and tugs. The plant generates its own power and exports power to
the National Grid.
Specification: A bespoke feeder pillar, with a footprint of
2800mm x 900mm, consisting of two standard feeder cubicles in a ‘back to
back’ arrangement to service the following:
General Power
Sub Mains Circuit
Low voltage 110V centre tapped earth socket outlets/connection units
General area lighting and floodlighting
Jetty Navigational Lighting and Emergency Lighting
The pillar was to be sited on a jetty. Therefore it was recommended that
it be fabricated in 5mm 316 grade stainless steel to suit the marine
environment. Electrical distribution panels to be in modular polycarbonate,
IP65 enclosures, with the following general specification:
Material: Thermoplastic
Application Areas: Harsh Environments/Outdoor Use
Ambient Conditions: -5o C to +40o C
Insulation: Protection Class II
Impact Strength: IK 08 (5 Joule) to DIN EN 50 102
Ingress Protection: IP65 – Dust Proof & Water Jets
Electrical Parameters: Rated Current 630A Insulation Voltage AC/DC 690
Burning Behaviour: Glow Wire Test 960o C to IEC 60 695-2-1
Temperature Resistance: -40°C up to +120°C
UV Resistance: Direct Sun Radiation
Chemical Resistance: Acid & Lye 10%, Petrol & Mineral Oil
Toxic Behaviour: Silicon & Halogen Free
Design: After much discussion between CEL Designer and Consultant, a
design was agreed, a unique product reference, PQ2909, allocated and
outline drawings prepared and submitted to the client. The job subsequently
went out to tender and prices were submitted by contractors.
Manufacture: Once the formal order was received, detailed circuit
diagrams were prepared and submitted for approval. Several design
changes occurred as the project progressed and once final design was
approved, fabrication of the pillar and assembly of the electrical equipment
began.
Testing: Carried out to BSEN 60439-1. Because of the very special
requirements for this project the customer sent a representative to witness
the test.
Delivery: Due to the nature of the site and the product, a specific delivery
date and time was arranged.
