Brian “Head” The Man who Left Korn for God by Kim Katz In a world where riches and fame seem to be the dream of most, it's almost hard to even comprehend someone walking away from "everything". That's what guitarist Brian Welch did. Welch, or "Head" as he is known by his many fans, shocked the rock scene when he left Korn, one of the most popular metal bands on the planet, trading his worldly success and nonstop partying for a "relationship with God". The decision came easy for the guitar icon when after already becoming disgusted with himself at his drug dependency, he heard his 5 year old daughter singing the lyrics to the Korn song A.D.I.D.A.S. (All Day I Dream About Sex). For Head that was the last straw. He was in need of turning his life around and at that time turned his life over to Jesus Christ. Since then, Head has found the peace and happiness that eluded him for so long - the harmony and serenity that calmed his restless spirit. Although Head has walked out on Korn, he has not stopped making music by any means. Save Me from Myself, Welch's first solo release since Korn, is still filled with the heavy guitars and powerful vocals that weigh heavily in the Nu Metal genre. The album has received critical acclaim and, one week after its release, hit #13 on the music charts despite its Christian message. In other words, the album rocks. Welch has also written a book on his experience with the same title. I met with Brian at his hotel while he was in town for a CD signing. He was extremely upbeat and genuinely excited about his new lifestyle. Kim - Hi, I want to congratulate you on writing a bestseller not just about the sex, drugs, and rock and roll - but about your conversion.. Brian - Spiritual awakening, I like to call it. Kim - Spiritual awakening, yeah I like the sound of that better too! Brian - I woke up. Kim - Right. Congratulations, was that scary? To put it down, you know, in print? Brian - Yeah. Especially some of the darker things that no one knew about: my past, my ex-wife, the abuse and stuff. I was like, "My mom's 10 BUZZ S&E www.buzznews.tv Welch elch
going to read this" - but I felt - something inside me said, pour everything out. And even the worst things that really bothered you that you did, pour it out and you're going to be getting it out of you and also you're going to be helping someone reading it so.. I just had to man up and do it! Kim - That's big of you, I'll tell you someof it was hard to even read... and I was like, "Wow, that's really brave of him" because part of you had to be sitting there going like, "maybe I'll sweeten this up a little or maybe I'll leave this one out." Brian - Yeah, yeah... I mean in some spots even the publisher told me that I know that Christ forgave you, but some people out there might not forgive this - so is there any way we could? And I was just like No man, I'm sorry I did it and I gotta talk about how sorry I am so.. Kim - Good, that's good... because the deeper you went, the more people you cover. Because everybody else's negative experiences are like that and worse... so what you might think of as, ohh... the worst thing you could do in the world... in other countries, they're like "eh".. Brian - Yeah, and even here... let's say a conservative Christian that grew up that way their whole life - they read, like I've had people read my book and go "gosh...I can't..." and then another guy would read my book that's been in that lifestyle their whole life and be like "Oh dude, I would do that.." so it just, it really depends on the person. Kim - Yeah, there are a couple of neat things I want to talk about. And I just think this is so great, I don't know if you originated this, but something about evil shouting at God on its way out when in a time of spiritual dryness you just stop going, "Oh please.. and thank you.." and you're like "Screw you.. this isn't working, I'm done with you.." And I just.. bit the hand that feeds.. what did I do.. I just cussed at God.. but I love that you put down in words that it's something LEAVING you - and it's getting one last thing going out. Brian - Yeah, yeah it is! Like you get this rage.. I was raging, you know, like.. I felt like there was a demon possessing me and just yelling and then al of a sudden it comes out, seems like it comes out and the next time you go through something like that, you're stronger. Kim - Yeah, but it's ok to do that - it's necessary. You also say that "when pain from the past is leaving you, you might need to feel it again, on the way out." And I love it, it's a beautiful image - it's true. When something from the past comes up and you need to reprocess it.. you don't want to but sometimes, like you said, you have to go right through that hologram as it leaves you and just.. Brian - Yeah, those emotions are real and you stuff them down if you don't deal with them. So when a spiritual cleansing happens, and it's real - because God cleanses you if you're really seri- ous about a relationship with him and there's something like.. you got beat real bad on one day by your parents, or something like that. When you're going through the healing, you feel some pain.. Kim - You re-experience it, as if it's happening right then.. Brian - Yeah, or the pain that you felt from that, He lifts it out - He uproots it. It's crazy man, I never would have believed it in a mil- lion years if it hadn't happened to me.. Kim - Do you ever notice too that sometimes when you're peaking spiritually - you're not dry - you're feeling like, wow the signs are coming, things are happening, I really feel it, I'm feeling the presence, and then maybe you'll say a really strong prayer and then the next day or the next week it's like a backlash of negativity from inside yourself.. like, "Oh man, that was a good prayer.. Oh shit, now I'm paying for it." It's like the devil or evil or whatever comes around and gets mad that you prayed so strong and wants to challenge you about it. Brian - Totally. It's like.. that's what this life is about, a roller- coaster. That's where I dig into the bible, and I'm human you know, but on the bad days you have these people getting beat for telling people about Jesus, they're getting beat and they get out of prison and are like "I was beat for the name of Jesus!" and I'm reading that on a bad day going, "Hey how do I get like that?" They look crazy when I read it, but I'm feeling horrible today.. how can I get up and feel like that? Kim - Right, right.. Brian - But there's a principle that when something really bad comes against you, that means something really good will come out of it. This life is all about birthing, and as you know, there's a pain that comes along with birthing. Kim - Yeah.. right - and it is hard to give birth to a painting, or song as well, you know? Brian - Yeah, it's like everything is involved with that stuff, you know? Kim - Yeah, and you know there's another thing that I really enjoyed that you put in the book was the photo of the dove that appeared - that one of your friends captured (continued page 13)
