What are “Amplitude” & “Phase”
Quadratures?
§ EM field is quantized by associating a quantum harmonic
oscillator (QHO) with each mode of the radiation field
§ QHO for a particular mode has a destruction operator “a”
and a creation operator “a † ”
ú “a” and “a † ” not Hermitian and hence not observables
ú But certain operators built from them are observables:
 X + = a † + a = amplitude quadrature operator
 X – = i (a † – a) = phase quadrature operator
X + and X – are conjugate observables obeying the Heisenberg
Uncertainty Principle
ú We imprint information on the phase and amplitude
quadratures via phase and/or amplitude modulation
