Accomplishment…Across The Board
by Brother Richard Kestler, FSC ‘60
In March, the Alumni Association inducted three new members – George Hines ’46, Bill Whiteside ’46,
and Joe Slabinski ’67 – into the Hall of Fame. They join an elite group of sixty men and one woman who
have impacted our community and brought honor to our school. By doing so, their images will forever
grace our hallway and be an example to future generations of Explorers.
Loyalty is just one of the
many words that can be
used to describe these
men and their relationship
with La Salle College High
School. Although, they have
given greatly to La Salle,
there is no question as to
the profound effect that La
Salle has had on their lives.
You should know that La
Salle continues to have this
same effect on its students.
Boys will be boys, but La
Salle boys are gentlemen.
Some things will never
change.
I am proud to report that La Salle College High
School continues to be a thriving community. Despite
current economic conditions, La Salle will have a
strong enrollment for the upcoming academic year.
Over 290 boys have registered for the Class of 2013
and all signs point to our current classes remaining
intact. The admissions numbers are further evidence
that La Salle is a desirable education for young men
of the Delaware Valley. Our parents are willing to
sacrifice so their sons can benefit from the many
opportunities that we offer. La Salle has responded to
this commitment by making every effort to minimize
any increases in tuition, but in doing so, we must rely
more than ever on annual giving and the generosity
of our parents, alumni, and friends.
Our boys continue to be Men of Accomplishment.
The Swimming Team captured our fifth Philadelphia
Catholic League Championship and fourth District 12
City Championship of the year. No other school has
won more than one. Our Hockey Team won both a
second straight Flyers Cup and Keystone Cup (State
Championship), while our Speech and Debate Team,
Academic Decathlon Team, and Mathletes all finished
first in the area by winning their respective tournaments.
We were recently notified by the Siemens Foundation
and the College Board on our selection to receive
the 2009 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.
We were one of only fifty high schools nationally to
receive such a distinction and the only high school in
Pennsylvania. The award is a tribute to our curriculum,
teachers, and test scores. In February, we were
informed by the National Merit Scholarship Program
that ten of our seniors were chosen as Finalists in
the 2009 competition for Merit Scholarship Awards.
The ten boys represent the most among Catholic and
private high schools in the Delaware Valley.
Our Music Program is flourishing with over one third
of our students actively participating in instrumental,
choral, and/or theatre groups. While our eighteen
voluntary service programs continue to serve the
needs of Greater Philadelphia Area on a daily basis
and affect a countless number of lives.
All this takes place within the confines of a growing
campus and a facility that is second to none. A look
around our new addition and recently renovated
classrooms and one will see our commitment to
providing the very best for our students. If you have
not already done so, I encourage you to take a look
around the school and, if you have the opportunity,
take in a baseball game at Ward Field, which is the
“show piece” of the recently developed 34-acres.
The Campaign Newsletter for
La Salle College High School
Spring 2009
Our Board of Trustees has worked diligently to follow
a strategic plan set forth years ago. The current construction
and ongoing capital campaign – Fulfilling
the Promise – are evidence of that vision. The
campaign has reached $19 million and will soon go
public. Many of you have generously responded. The
concept of the promise is at the core of our being
and our current efforts will allow the school to fulfill
its promise and provide an education that consists of
academic challenge, intellectual openness, emotional
security, and environmental safety.
Mr. Al Gabriele, our Chairman of the Board of
Trustees, will step down in June after five wonderful
years during which the school has thrived. He will
continue on as Chairman of the capital campaign
and see the campaign to its ultimate goal of $25 million.
Al will be replaced as Chairman of the Board of
Trustees by Mr. Ben Ventresca, a member of the Class
of 1970 and a man who brings a wealth of talent to
the task. The school is in “great hands” and looks to
build upon past successes.
These are amazing times here at La Salle. Despite
the economy, La Salle has every reason to be hopeful
as we have been blessed with incredible students,
parents, and alums. It is only fitting that we use
the Easter season to reflect on this hope. Saint Paul
reminds us, it is only because Jesus rose from the
dead that we have reason for hope. We are truly an
Alleluia People!
May I take this occasion to wish you and yours all the
joy associated with the Easter Season.

Campaign Update
by A. J. Gabriele
Fulfilling the Promise, the Capital Campaign of La Salle College High
School, has continued to do well during the last few months of tumultuous
economic times. A true testament to the work of the Christian Brothers
and the value placed on a Lasallian education is the fact that only 175
donors have committed almost $19,000,000 to this campaign. While the
majority of donors have made pledges of $25,000, the average gift is
over $100,000. These numbers are evidence of the commitment and
generosity of our donors not only to the school, but to the education of
future generations of Lasallian Gentlemen. These donors have not only
supported the ‘bricks and mortar’ of the new addition, but also the
endowment and financial aid.
The next step in our fundraising strategy and final goal of $25 million will be to
go public with the campaign to the entire La Salle Community. Once the campaign
reaches the $20 million mark, steps will be taken to engage all of our alumni, parents,
and friends. The Campaign Committee has already been approached by a number of
alumni classes expressing the desire to obtain naming rights to a new classroom, a
renovated room in McLean Hall, or an endowed scholarship. Our next big push will be
to enable their wishes through a series of class campaigns. The final phase will incorporate
all of our alumni and the greater La Salle Community who wish to be a part of
this historic and groundbreaking initiative at La Salle College High School.
If you haven’t been back to La Salle lately, I encourage you to stop by and see the
new Ward Baseball Field, the Whalen Courtyard, the McCarthy Trail, the Hughes
College Counseling Center, the Donahue-Fitzpatrick Counseling Center, the Mothers
Club Marian Chapel and our state-of-the art laboratories and classrooms. As Brother
Richard Kestler always points out, La Salle keeps building on strength after strength.
Thank you all for being a part of it.
