Dear Colleagues, 

Aloha and welcome to the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Society for Leukocyte Biology. 

Our venue, the Hilton Grand Wailea Resort here in Maui promises beautiful views and 

exciting activities to supplement a highly stimulating scientific program. The theme for this 

year’s meeting is “Inflammation in innate and adaptive immunity”. Our Keynote Speaker 

and the recipient of the Bonazinga award is Charles Dinarello, a most appropriate selection 

especially in light of the importance of the IL-1 family in regulating a diverse array of 

inflammatory activities that impact on the character, magnitude and duration of associated 

immune responses. The program also contains 5 plenary sessions covering innate recognition 

mechanisms in host defense, inflammasomes, myeloid cell populations linking inflammation 

with cancer, the epithelium as a link between innate and Th2 immunity, and metabolism in 

immune regulation. Furthermore, the 10 concurrent sessions have been designed to reflect 

the broader interests of our community and will be composed of invited speakers, featured 

presentations and short presentations chosen from among the submitted abstracts. 

In addition to the Alcohol and Immunology satellite symposium there are also a number 

of special sessions that deal with science career issues and include Street Smarts of Science: A 

Survival Guide for Graduate Students (Liz Kovacs), How to Write Your First Grant Application 

(Julian Cambronero), and a session sponsored by the Women and Diversity Committee. 

Finally, there are numerous activities and sites in Maui that will provide lots of pre- or 

post meeting potential. A dawn bicycle ride down from the top of the volcano or a trip to 

the waterfalls and the lush rain forest on the eastern side of the island are great options. In 

addition to an opening reception that will be held the first night of the meeting immediately 

after the Bonazinga award presentation; we will also be hosting a mixer on Monday evening 

that should provide a great chance to socialize.

participants as well as their á la carte menu.

Bistro Molokini 

• Offers a menu of mouth-watering California 

and Island specialties, plus all your favorites. 

Breathtaking views of the Pacific and nearby 

islands served with every meal. 

• A “Wiki Wiki” menu for SLB participants will be 

offered with options for you to choose that will 

enable guests to get back to the meetings in a 

timely fashion.

Volcano Bar 

• Offers salads, sandwiches, wraps and burgers 

poolside amidst the pools and cascading 

waterfalls. Refresh with a tropical drink or

Other nearby options for lunch can be found at The 

Shops at Wailea which is less than a 5 minute walk from 

the hotel. Various restaurants offer table service as well 

as options for quick, inexpensive grab-n-go meals.

Printed Abstract books were made available online 

during pre-registration. Those purchased will be 

available for pick-up at the registration desk. A very 

limited number of copies will be available for onsite 

purchase ($30) at the registration desk. 

Abstracts are also available for viewing in the eLB 

version www.cenveomobile.com/i/81986 or as a PDF 

on the SLB website. 

Internet Access 

Internet access is complimentary in the guest rooms 

for those staying onsite at the Grand Wailea (use your 

room number and last name). Complimentary access 

is also provided in the foyers, meeting spaces and 

common areas of the hotel including the Cyber Café 

(Haleakala Gardens). Bring your own device and enjoy 

the tranquility of this setting. This access will also 

work in the poster board area for mobile viewing of 

abstracts and posters simultaneously. 

Cyber Café 

Again this year at SLB, we have a Cyber Café for 

our attendees which will be located in the Haleakala 

Gardens. Use this space to view abstracts online, 

check your email, meet with small groups to discuss 

areas of interest, have a mini-job fair and meet with 

prospective employers (see message and job board 

near the registration desk), or just sit and meet other 

SLB members! 

Accommodations 

Accommodations are provided by the Grand Wailea, 

Maui, Hawai’i. Surrounded by the rising slopes of 

Haleakala and the expansive azure blue of the Pacific 

Ocean, the design of this unique resort captivates 

and delights the senses. Visit the concierge for travel 

assistance and touring options. 


Airport and Transportation 

Kahului Airport is easily accessible to the Grand Wailea. 

The Grand Wailea Resort offers transportation to and 

from the airport for a service charge. Taxi cabs are 

readily available at the airport as well. 

Parking 

Valet parking is $30 per car, per day, plus tax. This 

daily fee includes unlimited in-and-out privileges and 

24-hour valet service. 

Speakers 

Presenters are asked to load their talks at least 2 

hours prior to their sessions by visiting the speaker 

ready room (Maile 3). For loading or if you would like 

to practice your presentation, please visit the speaker 

ready room in the Maile 3 (hours listed below.) SLB 

will provide laptops, LCD projectors/screens and 

microphones. If you require any assistance, please 

contact one of the AV Technicians. Equipment is 

compatible with both Mac and Microsoft products. 

Please arrive in the session room at least 15 minutes 

prior to your start time.

There will be four (4) poster sessions during the 

meeting where posters, which are all displayed

in Haleakala I. Please post and remove your posters as 

described in your acceptance letters. Poster boards 

are available beginning noon on Sunday, October 

28th and must be removed by 3:00 PM on Tuesday, 

October 30th. The organizers are not responsible for 

any materials posted. Pushpins are provided. Posters



will be presented in four sessions (A,B,C, and D). All 

poster sessions are held at extended coffee breaks 

and refreshments will be provided.

forum” meeting. If you are not currently a member,

Awards 

Those who have been notified that they are Student 

Travel Award recipients may pick-up their checks at 

the registration desk (signature required). Thorbecke, 

Adams and Bonazinga Awards will be presented 

during the named program session. Presidential 

Nominees will present on Sunday afternoon, 

October 28th and winners will be announced and 

awarded at the Member Business Meeting on 

Monday, October 29th from 3:30 pm - 4:00 pm 

in Haleakala 4/5.
