4. Naturally we would be concerned to discover the extent to which Scots <strong>and</strong> Scotch-<br />

Irish contributed to the growth of the new l<strong>and</strong>s from Ohio west from 1850 onwards.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Census data show foreign born in States <strong>and</strong> territories. Another study indicates<br />

the total immigration from Scotl<strong>and</strong> from 1850 to 1910 (Table XXIV). <strong>The</strong> following<br />

Table will give some indication of the Scottish foreign-born of selected states.<br />

<strong>The</strong> rapidity with which Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oregon, Utah <strong>and</strong><br />

California grew from 1850 to 1870 was indicative that many hundreds of thous<strong>and</strong>s wanted<br />

to settle west of the Mississippi where l<strong>and</strong>s were available at a lower cost.<br />

Both Scots <strong>and</strong> Canadians were involved in the search for l<strong>and</strong> In the 70's when Americans<br />

built their railroad lines. Canada had to wait for another decade before she could develop a<br />

line to the Pacific. In that period 1870-79 Scotl<strong>and</strong> sent 67,445 <strong>and</strong> Irel<strong>and</strong> over 400,000<br />

persons to the United States.<br />

Arizona, Montana <strong>and</strong> Nevada drew miners from both l<strong>and</strong>s. Utah had other reasons for<br />

their growth.<br />
