<strong>Report</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Keeper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Clan</strong> Records<br />

to <strong>the</strong> 10<br />

th<br />

<strong>Clan</strong> <strong>Macfie</strong> Parliament.<br />

Little work has been done in collating all <strong>the</strong> information that is out <strong>the</strong>re. Despite<br />

appeals at previous Parliaments to have all relevant <strong>Macfie</strong> information copied to <strong>the</strong><br />

Keeper.<br />

There have been a number <strong>of</strong> requests for information relating to specific<br />

individuals, but because <strong>the</strong>re is so little research carried out in Scotl<strong>and</strong>, on <strong>Clan</strong><br />

names, it is difficult to come to someone’s aid. There is also <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>of</strong> linking<br />

from, in particular, America <strong>and</strong> Canada back to Scotl<strong>and</strong> as many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parish<br />

records were destroyed at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reformation. So we need to encourage this<br />

aspect <strong>of</strong> research. Perhaps that is a project that we need to consider.<br />

Three books have been purchased, two on heraldry <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>Clan</strong>s. The first is<br />

‘Boutell’s Heraldry’ by J.P. Brooke-Little who at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> writing was <strong>the</strong> Norroy<br />

<strong>and</strong> Ulster King <strong>of</strong> Arms. The second is ‘Scots Heraldry’ by Sir Thomas Innes <strong>of</strong><br />

Learney Lord Lyon King <strong>of</strong> Arms, which was written in 1934 <strong>and</strong> enlarged in 1956,<br />

<strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> copy in <strong>the</strong> library. The o<strong>the</strong>r book is a first edition copy <strong>of</strong> Ian<br />

Grimble’s ‘<strong>Clan</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Chiefs.’ It explores <strong>the</strong> origins <strong>of</strong> tribalism among <strong>the</strong> Celtic<br />

peoples <strong>of</strong> Europe <strong>and</strong> how it was brought to Scotl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

In <strong>the</strong>se days we have ways <strong>of</strong> storing <strong>and</strong> disseminating incredible amounts <strong>of</strong><br />

information. So may I appeal to each Society to ga<strong>the</strong>r all <strong>the</strong> info <strong>the</strong>y or <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

members may have put on a flash/pen drive <strong>and</strong> pass it on to <strong>the</strong> KotR. The greater<br />

<strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> information we have on families <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir origins will allow <strong>the</strong> KotR<br />

to help o<strong>the</strong>rs who are researching <strong>the</strong>ir family <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y have completed<br />

perhaps <strong>the</strong>y could be persuaded to add <strong>the</strong>ir findings to our knowledge base.<br />
