Since the use of computer technology and realtime writing has become an integral part of the court reporting field,<br />
many judicial reporters and freelance reporters use scopists to edit and translate their work using computer-aided<br />
transcription software.<br />
Scopists work at home, in court reporting offices, and in courts translating court reporters’ machine shorthand<br />
notes into text and official court documents using a computer with court reporting computer-aided transcription<br />
software.<br />
Scoping Certificate Competencies<br />
Upon completion of the Certificate program, you will be able to:<br />
� Demonstrate knowledge of machine shorthand theory, common brief forms and phrases used in the<br />
judicial reporting profession, including reading and transcription of notes.<br />
� Produce a verbatim transcript to include title page, direct and cross-examination, parentheticals, colloquy,<br />
and certification page with the use of a computer-aided transcription system.<br />
� Edit, proofread, and correct transcripts.<br />
� Use reference manuals to determine spelling of medical, legal, or other specialized terminology, and rules<br />
of English grammar.<br />
� Use appropriate medical references to prepare transcripts.<br />
� Describe the various court systems, their functions, and various stages of litigation in court.<br />
� Use a computer to enter and edit text and to create documents and transcripts.<br />
