LIVE NATIVITY HELD IN WHITEWATER
W
HITEWATER — First United Methodist Church in Whitewater,
LaGrange United Methodist Church and Richmond United Methodist
Church hosted a live nativity scene Dec. 2 at Cravath Lakefront Park
in Whitewater. The event featured actors portraying the story of the birth of
Jesus Christ. Visitors enjoyed Christmas carols, a petting zoo, camel rides,
refreshments and warming fires. Attending were angels, shepherds, wise men
(and young ladies) and Joseph with Mary, riding a very accommodating donkey,
supplied by Jo Don Farms, Inc.
Christmas Memories
T
he little country school is gone now, but
I have fond memories of Christmastime
there. It was my first year of teaching;
I attended a rural school for eight years, so I
knew what to expect at Christmas — a program
and party for the pupils and the whole community.
During Thanksgiving break, I found plays,
poems, songs and other things so each pupil had
several things to memorize for the program.
From then until the big night, we really practiced.
At last, the night arrived. Decorations were
up, the tree was lit. Pupils all looking their best.
The audience really liked the program. A success!
Then Santa came and passed out candy
and the gifts that the children had brought for
others in a gift exchange. I exchanged gifts with
all of them. I can truly say that this is a fond
memory.
C
hristmas 1946 is indeed memorable for
me. I was 7 years old and enjoyed the
company of two active, energetic,
inquisitive — and sometimes annoying —
younger brothers. However, our family dynamics
were about to change. Our mother was soon
to deliver a new baby.
The birth occurred Dec. 17 at St. Joseph’s
Hospital in Marshfield, Wis. To my great joy,
our new family member was a bouncing 8pound
baby girl. Finally, I had a sister, and my
parents allowed me to pick her first name —
Beverly.
Mom came home with our new sister on
Christmas Eve day. Mother and Dad put
Beverly Anne in my doll buggy, wheeled her
over to the Christmas tree and said, “Here’s
your Christmas present, a real live doll.”
For many years, our baby sister was called
“Dolly.” This year, she turned 61 years old on
Dec. 17, and we still treasure her as our
Christmas “Dolly.”
