General Notes: Legacy file notes concerning Myrtle Mae Henson: 

Mother's mother died giving birth as well as Grandma Singletary's first child "Mildred" in Achille, OK. Grandpa 

Singletary went down on the Red River in OK and talked to her Indian parent who was living in a TP and he let 

Grandpa have her. They christened her Myrtle Mae Singletary. Mother didn't know she wasn't a Singletary until 

she and dad eloped to get married in Denison, TX, and they had to have permission. Mother mentioned once that 

the night they were supposed to leave, dad, who had to cross a sugar cane field to Grandpa's house, reached 

through the bedroom window and shook a stalk of sugar cane in her face to wake her up. 

Though Mom took Lucille (my sister who was then about five years old) to visit her "Tate" kinfolk, Lucille was 

later told by mother that she didn't care for them much and that was the end of the story. 

From a story Luther SINGLETARY (Mom's foster brother) told me, Grandma stated that Grandpa had gone to 

the grocery store, heard some gossip that an Indian man had a baby he didn't want since his wife had died. Grandpa 

went home talked to Grandma and they loaded up the wagon and went down on Red River in Oklahoma to get the 

child since their baby Mildred was stillborn. Grandma also stated that the diaper had to be soaked off this baby

since it appeared that it had never been changed since the day it was put on. 

Another story recently acquired while doing family research which appears to have some credence: 

The story is that John Abraham Henson (b. 1861) died after eating a poisoned pie at home in Colbert Oklahoma 

and is buried there somewhere. His grandson, Connie Henson (1933), from Bokchito, Oklahoma, said that he had 

tried locating the cemetery where buried but could not find it. He also states emphatically that John Abraham 

Henson was 1/4 Cherokee Indian. 

It is thought perhaps that John married or lived with the widow, Josephine "Joscie" (Hunt) Tate, near Colbert, 

OK, and that they may have had a child. It is believed that John died about 1906/7 and if there was a daughter, 

this child could be the child adopted by Hollan and Luetta Singletary who christened her Myrtle Mae Henson, my 

mother, born 31 Oct 1906. How or why this situation occurred, if it did, is anybody's guess. However, Joscie Tate 

did have five or more other children to raise as a single parent, since her previous husband, Tom Tate, died about 

1900 in Tyler, Smith, Texas. 

Old letters uncovered in my parent's estate reflect that Carl W. Henson (1920), the son of Robert Henson (1899) 

the son of John Abraham Henson, corresponded with mother as early as 16 Oct 1972 and addresses her as "Aunt 

Mae". Discussing the lineage with Charlie Henson (1938), also Robert's son and grandson of John Abraham, he 

relates that it had been suggested he visit his half sister in Arkansas, but said that he never did. 

Connie Henson relates that when he got out of the service in 1955 that Robert, his father, suggested he visit Aunt 

Mae in Arkansas but that he never did also. He did state that he had been shown early school pictures of me which 

my mother had sent his, Mary Lodemi Henson (1899), wife of Robert. 

A school picture, 1949-1950, of Wadel Coleman Henson (1935), a brother of those already mentioned, was found 

in the family picture box so it appears that correspondence with Mary Henson, his mother, occurred. Coleman 

indicated he had visited mother once and tried again in 1989 while traveling with his oldest daughter, Martha Sue, 

but that he could not find her. There may be other Henson pictures without names which I and other family 

members do not recognize.

parent since her previous husband, Tom Tate, died about 1900 in Tyler, Smith, Texas. 

Old letters uncovered in my parent's estate reflect that Carl W. Henson corresponded with Mae (my mother) as early as 

16 Oct 1972 and addresses her as "Aunt Mae". Discussing the lineage with Charlie Henson, grandson of John, he 

relates that he was also informed by Robert (RD) Henson, his father, that he should visit his half -sister in Arkansas, but 

said that he never did. 

Connie Henson relates that when he got out of the service in 1955 that his father, Robert, suggested he visit Aunt Mae in 

Arkansas but that he never did also. He did state that he had been shown early school pictures of me which my mother 

had sent him. He also states emphatically that his grand father, John Abraham, was 1/4 Cherokee Indian. 

School pictures, 1949-1950, of Wadel Coleman Henson, born in 1935 and grandson of John, were found in the family 

picture box, so it appears that correspondence with Mary Henson, his mother, occurred. Coleman indicated he had 

visited mother once and tried again in 1989 while traveling with his older daughter, Martha Sue, but that he could not find 

the address. There may be other pictures without names which I and other family members do not recognize.

The story about John is that he died after eating a poisoned pie at home and is buried somewhere near Colbert, 

Oklahoma. His grandson, Connie Henson, said that he had tried locating the cemetery where buried, but could not find 

it. 

It is thought perhaps that John married or lived with the widow, Joscie (Hunt) Tate, near Colbert, OK, and that they may 

have had a child. It is believed that John died about 1906/7 and if there was a daughter, this child could be the child 

adopted by Hollan and Luetta Singletary who christened her Myrtle Mae, my mother, born 31 Oct 1906. How or why this 

situation occurred, if it did, is anybody's guess. However, Joscie did have five or more other children to raise as a single

Is it possible this is the correct child, John, born about 1887? The parent's birth states of AL for John Abraham, and TX 

for Mary fit. Based on the date of birth of John Abraham's children, Victoria and John, there is a five year gap. The border 

on this census, William R. Henson, is about two years younger than John, and if a relative, he could fit as another brother 

and child of John Abraham and Mary. However, I would point out that his parent's birth places of TX doesn't fit like John's, 

but could be incorrectly stated.
