Sixty years of community service and civic
leadership. This it is not something that is
easily accomplished and for most of us rarely
do we have the opportunity to be a part of
such a milestone.
But in 2011, we are the benefactors of what
has now become a healthy, viable foundation
for all businesses in northern New Jersey
to utilize, as well as being an annual
contributor of educational funding so
needed for the Paramus school system.
To all of the past presidents who helped
shape the Greater Paramus Chamber of
Commerce and nurtured it so that today it
flourishes, we salute you and thank you.
From the Chairman
To all of the board and business members in
the past 60 years, which includes our current members, no
one person could have built such a well-seasoned organization
if not for the unselfish, unsung nature and support provided
by the membership.
The Greater Paramus Chamber of Commerce has such a
nice ring to it. We have become a strong conduit for all
businesses looking for a competitive edge, not only through
our educational and well-rounded seminar programs, but
also through the exposure one experiences by simply tak-
ing advantage of the many networking
events we offer annually.
Because our Chamber has grown into a regional
organization, it is almost imperative
we have a day-to-day team that performs
and manages all that we are and all that we
provide our membership and the community
we serve.
That, ladies and gentlemen, rests with our
president, Fred Rohdieck and his assistant ,
Chris Morgan.
Nothing endures the test of time without
this foundation of leadership. We excel just
because of that; our board members superb,
and our president dedicated and on target.
So in this our 60th year, I am proud to be
the chairman of such a fine organization and know for sure
we will be a strong regional chamber for at least another 60
years and beyond.
From the President
As the current president/executive director of the
Greater Paramus Chamber of Commerce, I would
like to welcome you to our 60th Anniversary
Commemorative Publication.
Henry W. Vander Plaat, Sr., of Vander Plaat
Memorial Home, in 1951 founded and became
the first president of the Chamber of Commerce.
He is credited with organizing the group of
businessmen to more effectively serve the needs
of the community.
In this, our 60th year of operations, our
Chamber remains a voluntary federation of the
business community uniting the efforts of business
and professional individuals to ensure a
Fred Rohdieck, President
Greater Paramus Chamber
of Commerce
healthy economic and socio-economic base to benefit the entire community.
The Chamber continues to harness the tremendous potential of the private
enterprise system and enables its membership to accomplish collectively what
no one could do individually.
How relevant are we now some 60 years since our founding. Here are what
some of our members say...
“Having been a member of the Chamber for only a few months, we started
taking part in some of the networking events and very quickly found that it has
helped us immensely, both professionally and personally. We are honored to
have the opportunity to be a part of such a strong organization of local
businesses and look forward to many more years of success!”
“As a result of attending our first Chamber event, we won a new weekly account.
Needless to say we are planning on attending many more events in the future. “
“I became a member of the Paramus Chamber just after I started my business
in 2001. Now over 50% of my business is done with other businesses I met
through the chamber while volunteering on the board, chairing events and
inter-chamber networking.”
Now, in 2011, we can also celebrate many new successes. The Chamber has
an award-winning website, paramuschamber.com, with more than 10,000
visitors each month. Our monthly CrossRoads newspaper keeps members and
households in Paramus, Oradell and River Edge up to date on our activities.
The Chamber’s very popular Paramus! Magazine is now in its third year of
publication and continues to produce articles of interest and information to
both Chamber and community members.
We are most proud of the contributions made to our schools by our Greater
Paramus Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation, which since 1995 has
awarded grants to deserving projects which actively involve and stimulate
students. Almost $30,000 in grant funds are distributed every year.
Chamber celebrates 60 years
of making a big town smaller
BY MEGAN BURROW
Managing Editor
The Paramus Chamber of Commerce’s
60-year history spans a period of
tremendous growth in the borough,
from a community of residential
homes, farms and shops to a bustling
shopping destination and home to
more than 25,000 residents.
Founded in 1951 by Henry W. Vander
Plaat Sr., of Vander Plaat Memorial
Home, the chamber is now one of the
largest in the state, with more than 400
members.
After founding the chamber, Vander
Plaat became its first president and is
credited with organizing many of the
local businesses of the time to promote
local commerce and serve the needs of
the community.
Sixty years later, that mission remains
the same.
Joseph Pedone, the current chairman of
An archive photo of the Paramus Chamber
of Commerce offices.
the chamber and vice president of the
Greater Alliance Federal Credit Union,
said while the primary function of the
chamber is to help businesses grow, it
also serves other needs.
“We offer educational vehicles to allow
businesses to understand today’s climate
and what you may need to do to
build a business today,” he said. “We
also support the community, by provid-
Chamber of Commerce’s 60 years in business.
ing funding for the Paramus schools in
terms of education, scholarships and
grants. We are trying to become a
well-rounded source of information
for the community.”
Because of Paramus’ central location
in the county, Pedone said that over
the years the chamber has grown into
more of a regional organization. At
one time, the chamber served Paramus
businesses almost exclusively, but
it now counts businesses from across
the area as members.
Regionalizing is one of the chamber’s
goals as it moves further into the 21st
century, Pedone said.
“Our role is much broader now than
when the chamber was started. Sixty
years later we are more of a regional
hub for businesses to connect with each
other,” he said. “Even larger companies
have a vested interest in becoming part
of the chamber’s connection because
we have more of the tools and opportu-
nities to help businesses connect.”
He said that the borough’s unique position
among the major highways which
crisscross the county made it an ideal
location for a chamber that serves the
larger area.
“Because of the way Paramus is situated,
connecting many of the major highways,
it lends itself to bigger opportunities to
connect businesses,” he said. About a
quarter of the chamber’s membership
comes from outside the borough.
An important tool at the chamber’s disposal
is its magazine, which helps connect
it to the community in a way most
other chambers cannot offer businesses,
Pedone said.
“The magazine allows our chamber to
write articles to the community and
connect with residents, because anything
that a person might need to know
about a local business, the magazine
does a great job of opening residents’
eyes to what’s available to them,” he
said. “As a business it gives people in
the community a sense of who you are.”
Mike Epstein, the co-owner of Gold’s
Gym in Paramus, has been a member of
the chamber since the gym opened in
1992. He served as the chairman from
1997 to 1998.
“It’s been great and I don’t regret a minute
of it,” he said of his time with the chamber.
“I think there have been changes on
multiple levels since we joined. It’s gotten
better each and every year as an organization
in serving its members. They really
work to connect people and it’s a great
networking opportunity.”
Epstein said that the chamber works
with the community to ensure it is serving
the town’s needs. He pointed to the
recent discussion of changes to the Blue
Laws as an example of how the chamber
and the borough can work together.
The chamber surveyed its members
about the possibility of remaining open
on Sundays and gave its feedback to the
town to help with its decision.
While Paramus has not been immune to
the recent economic struggles, Epstein
said there is also plenty of recent development
in the borough. “There is al-
ways a lot of activity here,” he said.
Frank Aghassi of Columbia Bank was
the chairman for two years from 2001
to 2002. During the chamber’s 50th anniversary,
which was celebrated with a
gala at the Sheridan Hotel in Mahwah,
Aghassi and his team were able to locate
most of the past presidents of the
chamber as part of the celebration.
During his time as chairman, Aghassi
grew the chamber’s membership from
about 275 to over 400.
“In that two-year span we became very
aggressive with our marketing campaign,”
he said. “It was a concerted effort
within the chamber to set up phone centers
and get creative with our outreach. If
someone was interested, we would send
someone right out to speak with them.”
Aghassi said that Paramus’ location at
the intersection of routes 4 and 17 and
its reputation as a retail epicenter make
the borough a desirable place for companies
looking to open a business. Historically,
he said, the retail vacancy rate in
the borough lies between 2 and 5 percent.
“Everyone wants to be in Paramus.
It is one of the hardest towns to get into,”
he said. “We have more stores than anywhere
in the country by square foot.”
Dimitri Miaoulis, the vice president of
Baroan Technologies in Elmwood Park,
said joining the chamber was “one of
the best things we’ve ever done.” As
chairman from 2006 to 2009, Miaoulis
worked to expand the way the chamber
used technology. Chamber members
systemized software programs to become
more efficient and organized the
website, e-mails, accounting system
and how they keep track of events.
The changes helped the chamber become
more of a public resource, he said.
“The website was made into an information
portal for Paramus; a place
where residents and businesses can go
to look up information about the history
of Paramus, find a directory of
members, and other information about
the town, Miaoulis said.
As the chamber progresses into the future,
it will continue to explore ways to
not only further business, but the success
Above, from left, Nick Schnyder, Chamber President Ivan Sattem, Mrs. W. Victor Best, Mayor Fred Galda and
Councilman Joseph Goggin celebrate Keep Paramus Beautiful Day in April 1964.
of the community, members said.
The chamber’s role in connecting the
area’s business interests and the public is
central to its overall mission, said Epstein.
“As a business person in the community,
the chamber is a great vehicle to give
something back, advertise your fellow
businesses, and connect to other business
leaders in town,” he said. “People often
consider Paramus a large town, but the
chamber can make it feel a little smaller.”
In the second year of her tenure as chairwoman,
which ran from 2006 to 2008,
Teri Duda of Berkeley College was told by
a consultant the chamber had hired that
the best thing for it to do might be to close
up shop. Membership was only at about
125 and the organization was in need of
revitalization, Duda said.
“It was really make-or-break time for us.
We rolled up our sleeves and got to
work to begin recruiting and looking for
someone to take over as president,” she
said. “We had a long and proud history,
but it needed to be moved into the 21st
century."
The chamber hired Fred Rohdieck as
president, who worked to organize the
group’s membership and paperwork;
new members of the board of directors
were also brought in.
“We had a new vision and a new mission,”
said Duda. “We revitalized and
put new energy into the chamber.”
Moving forward, she said the chamber
plans to revamp its logo and create a
new mission statement.
“We have a very motivated board of directors
who are continuing with the
change and are working to pursue our
mission,” she said. “[The chamber is]
still growing all the time, even in this
economy.”
Behnke’s Building Supply
A family foundation built in the borough
Behnke’s Building Supply has been serving the borough as a family business since 1951.
Fred Behnke, owner of Behnke’s Building
Supply, wasn’t even born when the
company first opened its doors in August
1951, then know as Paramus Building
Supply.
Fritz Behnke (Fred’s father), along with
his two brothers, Walter and Donald,
started the family business when they
purchased an existing six-month-old
lumber company called Cooper Lumber.
“Business was not going well with them
and the three brothers were there at the
right time,” Fred Behnke said. Originally
the Behnkes, a family of farmers,
had a farm where they grew corn,
tomatoes and cabbage.
Fritz Behnke and his brothers started
the business early in Paramus’ commercial
history, just as the town’s population
was starting to rise.
“With World War II coming to an end,
the dynamics of Paramus were changing.
Farms were being sold and houses
were being built. The timing was right
as the Behnke farm property was sold
off and after a brief trucking business,
the lumberyard opened its doors,” Fred
Behnke said.
He remembers that the beginning years
of the business were thrilling for his father
Fritz, who witnessed the town’s development
firsthand.
Fritz
Behnke
“My dad would talk about the excitement
of selling to homeowners in Paramus
and nearby towns as houses were
springing up instead of celery and
corn,” he said.
HISTORICAL FIGURE
Fritz Behnke is a notable figure in Paramus.
His most recognizable honor may
be the The Fritz Behnke Historical Museum
located on Paramus Road. The
museum features an array of Paramus
memorabilia, including vintage appliances
and equipment that Fritz Behnke
used to keep in his farm.
“Walking through the doors, you’ll find a
priceless collection of pictures, antiques
and artifacts showing the great history of
Paramus and how we as a town went
from farms to malls,” Fred Behnke said.
Behnke’s Building Supply’s greatest accomplishment
is “to be of service to this
great town.” He said, “It has been rewarding
to be involved with the Paramus
Chamber of Commerce, Rotary,
and Fire departments.”
Behnke’s Building Supply is a visible
presence in the Paramus community.
“We have proudly donated our trucks
for various organizations in the town’s
Fourth of July parade and have sponsored
a little league baseball team for as
long as I can remember,” Fred Behnke
said.
The secret to the business’s 60-year success,
he said, is prioritizing the customer.
“Old customers and new ones
must feel confident to purchase building
material, windows, doors, moldings,
decks, and much more from us.”
Behnke’s Building Supply has undergone
only a couple management adjustments
over all its years. Walter Behnke,
who served as the company president,
has since passed away. When Fritz, 92,
and Donald, 80, decided to retire, they
kept the business in the family, bestowing
the company upon their sons and
nephews: Kevin, Barry, Fred and Donald.
Barry eventually left the business,
leaving present ownership of Behnke’s
Building Supply to the remaining three.
Kevin’s son Craig is now involved as an
outside salesman, meaning the business
has passed through four generations.
Behnke’s Building Supply is located at
131 Route 17 south in Paramus. Store
hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday
through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to
BY BRYAN WASSEL
Staff Writer
As part of its efforts to give
back to the community, the
Greater Paramus Chamber of
Commerce created the Education
Foundation, a charitable
arm of the organization that
supports innovative ideas and
brings new methods of education
to the borough’s schools.
Formed in 1995, the foundation
is a registered 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization that is
“dedicated to encouraging and
funding innovative and challenging
ideas and projects
amongst Paramus students
and teachers.” The foundation
remains non-political and operates
independently of the
Board of Education, according
to its mission statement. Since
its founding, the Education
Foundation has provided more
than $250,000 to support innovative
classroom ideas.
The organization raised
$40,000 for projects in the
2011 school year alone, which provided
funding for 11 projects, according to
Chamber President Frederick Rohdieck.
The foundation’s goal is to provide
schools with resources above and beyond
what the budget allows.
“If you look back historically from when
the foundation was initially founded
and the work that has been done, and
these are all volunteers that put time in,
simply for the benefit of contributing to
the public education here in Paramus, it
really provides our staff with the resources
to be innovative,” said Paramus
Superintendent of Schools James Montesano,
an ex-officio member of the
foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Each year, teachers with innovative
ideas or projects to enhance their stu-
Education Foundation
funds innovative ideas
The Greater Paramus Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation provided a
grant this year to Ridge Ranch School for new programs.
dents’ educations can apply for grants.
The foundation’s board judges each application,
and those that show the most
creativity while also being something
that the standard budget can’t provide
for, receive grants, according to board
trustee Len LoPinto.
“Any teacher in the district may put
forth an application to receive the
grants,” Montesano said. “I think the
foundation does a wonderful job of dividing
the grants so there isn’t one big
large grant in any given year; they try to
slice it into smaller grants. Very often it
brings teachers together, where they
put grants together.”
Funded projects have covered the entire
spectrum of education in the district,
according to Montesano. Elementary,
middle and high schools, as well as spe-
cial education, all regularly receive
grants for projects designed
for their specific grade
levels. Everything from technology
to the environment has
been worked into the projects,
providing a diverse enhancement
for students’ educations.
Previous projects have included
Listen to Read at Stony Lane
School, which used audio
books in conjunction with standard
books to help develop
reading comprehension; Wii
With Me at East Brook Middle
School, which integrated mathematics
and video games to design
experiments and generate
data; and ICast at Paramus
High School, where students
undertook research projects
and used their findings to create
a podcast, a broadcast used
with iPods, simultaneously
practicing research, public
speaking and technology skills.
“It’s across the spectrum,” Montesano
said. “I think it gets the
teachers excited, and when
teachers are excited about projects
obviously kids are going to be excited
about learning.”
Funding for the grants is generated
through donations and fund-raisers.
One of the biggest fund-raisers is Taste
of Paramus, a tasting of local restaurants’
food and drink, often with music
by high school students.
The other major event is the Dream
Awards Gala, a charity dinner that also
recognizes grant recipients and Paramus
residents who have contributed to
the borough.
Foundation, call 201-261-3344.
Vander Plaat Memorial Home:
By Aimee La Fountain
Correspondent
The moral of Henry Vander Plaat Sr.,
founder of Vander Plaat Memorial
Home, was: “Let us not lose the community
spirit in which people are concerned
about their neighbors and
always willing to assist those in need.”
Vander Plaat Sr. first opened Vander
Plaat Memorial Home in 1927. At that
time, Paramus consisted of mostly
farms, Route 17 was being constructed
and Farview Avenue was a dirt road,
but he believed it would prove to be a
convenient location for his business.
Vander Plaat Sr. had the “foresight that
roads connected [in Paramus]” and a
belief in the growing commerce of the
town, said present owner Henry Vander
Plaat Jr. “He had that vision. That’s
why he selected this location.”
The Vander Plaat Memorial Home was
Henry Vander Plaat Sr.’s place of business
as well as his residence until his
passing in 1994.
Originally Vander Plaat Memorial
Home mainly organized funeral affairs,
as funerals were customarily held in
homes, non-licensed partner Jeff Vander
Plaat said. Vander Plaat Memorial
Home began hosting services about 50
years ago when that trend changed.
The style and structure of ceremonies is
perhaps the biggest change in the in-
Keeping the community spirit
Vander Plaat Memorial Home, above left in its current form and above right in the 1960s, first opened in 1927.
dustry over Vander Plaat Memorial
Home’s years in business. As the industry
progressed, habits changed, such as
longer viewing times.
“In the past, [people had] very traditional
services, today [they have] more
liberty,” said Vander Plaat Jr.
“Families today have more ability to select
services to fill their needs,” added
Jeff Vander Plaat.
The facility received an addition in 1963
and underwent renovation in 1997.
Vander Plaat Jr. describes the family
business as “very community-minded,”
and says the greatest aspect of working
in Paramus is “the ability to serve people
as we’d want to be served.” He also
noted that the business was opened
with the philosophy of “serving people
regardless of financial circumstances,
which is still our belief today.”
Vander Plaat Sr. was constantly active
in the community. He was the first president
and a charter member of both the
Chamber of Commerce (which he organized
in 1951) and the Paramus Rotary.
His achievements include helping
Paramus get its own post office and
forming a group of businessmen to better
respond to community needs. Other
notable roles included serving as president
of the Paramus Board of Health
(for 10 years) and chairman of the reorganization
committee for the Paramus
Boys’ Club. The Paramus Ambulance
Corps named him the “Father of the
Corps” because he was instrumental in
the group’s formulation.
Paramus has hosted several events in
recognition of Vander Plaat Sr. The
chamber dedicated its American flag to
him and the Boys’ Club sponsored a testimonial
dinner in his honor.
Vander Plaat Memorial Home continues
to participate in numerous local
events, including Thanksgiving with
the Seniors and the Light of Remembrance
Service.
“The town has been very supportive to
us over the years,” Vander Plaat Jr.
said.
The relationship Vander Plaat Memorial
Home has with residents is a source
of great pride. Jeff Vander Plaat said
their greatest accomplishment is “the
ability to provide every family a dignified
funeral service.”
Vander Plaat Memorial Home is a
member by invitation of Selected Independent
Funeral Homes. It is non-sectarian
and covers ceremonies for all
denominations.
Vander Plaat Memorial Home is located
at 113 S. Farview Ave. in Paramus.
Chamber and Berkeley College
Hit Milestones
After holding a number of key
positions over the past 20 years,
Teri Duda now serves as senior
vice president of Government Affairs
at Berkeley College’s Corporate
Offices in Paramus. For four
of those years, from 2002-2006,
she doubled as the chairperson
of the Paramus Chamber of Commerce.
While these roles may
seem completely different at first
glance, Duda recently pointed
out the ways in which the two organizations
cross paths.
“Berkeley has always been about
preparing students to take on responsibilities
in the real world. In
essence, we prepare them to be
tomorrow’s leaders of the professional
communities in which
their career paths lead them,”
Duda said. “Similarly,” she continued,
“the Chamber of Commerce
brings individuals and organizations together
for the benefit of the entire community,
accomplishing collectively what
could not be done otherwise.”
Instilling the senses of integrity, professionalism,
and community responsibility—which
have become cornerstones
of a Berkeley education—is critical to
these future professionals who will lead
the business communities of tomorrow,
Duda said.
“These days, you simply don’t make it to
a 60th anniversary, such as the Chamber’s,
or an 80th anniversary, like
Berkeley College, by not doing things
the right way,” she said. “That’s why I’m
proud to be associated with both organizations.
We’re working together for the
betterment of the community. And
that’s an idea I’d like to see spread.”
80th anniversary this year
Greenland Landscape Company
By Aimee La Fountain
Correspondent
After 60 years in business, Tom Weiss,
co-owner of Greenland Landscape
Company, says his company has “grown
with Paramus.”
Weiss and his brother, William Weiss III,
are second generation co-owners of
Greenland.
“The Garden Shop” was the original
name of the company when Weiss’s parents
started the family business in 1949.
“The land was cheap and it was on sort
of a main road, so they chose Paramus.
They bought one little farm stand and
over the years they added on. It just
grew and grew,” Weiss said.
Weiss, a lifelong borough resident, describes
the Paramus of years past as an
easygoing town. “It’s a good town [with] a
nice feel to it and it’s convenient to everything,”
he said. Weiss and his brother
grew up living right next door to the business.
“My brother and I worked here all
the time. It was part of our world,” he said.
The holiday season at The Garden Shop
is one of Weiss’s favorite childhood
memories of the family business.
“We had a lot of Christmas [festivities]
here. We used to have a petting zoo
here at Christmastime. [There were]
“Growing with Paramus”
Greenland Landscape Company, located at 396 Forest Ave. in Paramus, has grown over the last 60 years in the borough.
reindeer, sheep and goats in a big pen.
Then we had sleigh rides and a horse
pulled the sled around. It was quite the
Christmas spectacular.”
In 1970, the name of the business
changed to Greenland Landscape Company.
During this time, the company
started getting more involved with
landscape construction and the brothers
started a commercial property
maintenance division; they both hold
degrees in landscape architecture.
“We started to bring in a new level of expertise
to the company [when] we got involved
in landscape design,” Weiss said.
Weiss emphasizes the charm and refreshing
quality of an old-fashioned family
business prevailing in modern society.
“Among all the big to-do about big-box
stores of today, it’s nice to know there’s
a local, mom and pop store where people
still know who you are,” he said.
Greenland’s active involvement in Paramus
traces back decades. In the 1950s,
they handled the original planting for
Garden State Plaza when it was an outdoor
mall. The company has also sponsored
Little League teams for the past
40 years and employed Paramus residents
for the past 60.
As the landscaping business has
changed, so has the nature of customers,
according to Weiss. “I miss the relaxed
customer. It just doesn’t seem that people
are relaxed anymore,” he said.
Greenland now offers a better variety of
items in areas such as plants, soil, information
or chemical treatments. The
staff strives to follow developments in
the landscaping industry.
“We like the fact that we’re always
changing. Sometimes what’s new is old
and sometimes new technology is better,”
he said.
Weiss says Greenland is also happy to
claim “60 years of nurturing the environment.”
One of the company’s current
operations is constructing
eco-friendly water gardens. Greenland
also makes a concentrated effort to obtain
supplies made in New Jersey or
nearby areas. “We try to keep our carbon
footprint to a minimum,” he said.
Passion is the secret to Greenland’s longterm
success, according to Weiss. He
said, “We’re always looking for something
new or creative [and] changing
with the times. We have a passion for the
environment and the outdoors.”
Greenland Landscape Company is located
at 396 Forest Ave. in Paramus.
‘The ambassador’ keeps moving forward
Hal Swartz has been with chamber for 25 years
BY BRYAN WASSEL
Staff Writer
A long-time member of the Paramus
Chamber of Commerce, Hal Swartz,
owner of Ad-Vantage Truck Rental on
Route 17 north, knows how important it
is to give back to the community that has
kept him in business for the past 40 years.
“For me, it’s a pleasure to do this,” Swartz
said. “We work with the community as
well as give back to the community.”
While he was initially a non-active
member when he first joined the chamber
in the 1970s, after leaving for several
years, Swartz came back and
became heavily involved as an active
member, a role he has relished for the
past 25 years.
After moving to Paramus from Massachusetts,
Swartz became a night deliveryman
for a local pharmacy. One day
his car broke down on the job, and a
local car dealer who drove the same
model lent him his car, while Swartz’s
was repaired. The two became friends,
and eventually Swartz left the pharmacy
to work for the dealership and
began a career in the automotive business
that would eventually lead to ownership
of his own shop.
After spending six years in the shop,
Swartz moved to the sales floor, but didn’t
enjoy it as much and eventually returned
to the shop for several more years
while attending school. When he again
moved to the sales floor, he eventually
rose to the position of assistant manager.
“I loved the shop, I loved working there,”
Swartz said. “When I got into sales, I was
kind of shy, but it broke me in.”
After 16 years with the dealership,
Swartz received a job offer from a
rental and lease dealer. Having previously
researched the field, Swartz knew
his interest was with trucks and truck
rentals, and soon he was making four or
five sales a week and having a much
easier time doing rentals than sales.
Hal Swartz (third on the right), owner of Ad-Vantage Truck Rental on Route 17 north, has been a Greater
Paramus Chamber of Commerce member for 25 years.
After a year and some disagreements
with management, Swartz began to
consider setting out on his own, and
found the location on Route 17 north
that Ad-Vantage remains in to this day.
When Swartz contacted the owner of
the property, he soon discovered that
he had previously repaired the owner’s
vehicle, which broke the ice, and within
days Swartz had a contract.
“I was never sorry I left,” Swartz said. “I
loved the dealership, but as I told my wife,
I couldn’t work there for another 16 years.”
Swartz constructed his office in the cavernous
building himself, with help from
his son, and set about building up his
own truck rental service. For the first
six months, he continued working
nights at a dealership, putting in six
days a week, until finally his new business
was busy enough that he had to
concentrate solely on his store.
Most of all, Swartz likes staying involved
with the people of the community,
something the chamber has helped him
achieve. Swartz attends as many meetings
with Paramus residents as possible,
interacting with the community through
the chamber in a role he called “the ambassador.”
“When you belong to the chamber, you
need to make it work for you,” Swartz
said.
The good work the chamber does around
the borough is also a good reason to support
the organization, according to
Swartz. The chamber’s various charities
help out the community, its schools and
the less fortunate through initiatives such
as the Education Foundation.
“I always believe in giving back to people
that teach and those that can’t help
themselves,” he said.
Most importantly, being involved with
the community means you meet and
learn from a large variety of people, according
to Swartz. Citing what a
teacher friend once called his “insatiable
desire to learn,” he noted that his
experiences with people, from the shop
workers that took him under their wing
in his early career to the people he
meets at chamber events, are important
to learning and enjoying oneself.
“It’s very important for us to be involved
with people,” Swartz said. “You learn
from people; it’s a learning experience
every day.”
