With the cost of doing business at an
all-time high, many businesses are having
a difficult time surviving during the
current economic slowdown. Coupled
with an ailing economy and cutbacks in
consumer spending, businesses will
have their work cut out for them in
2009.
How can a business with escalating
costs move their numbers from being in
the red to black? It’s easy… Go Green.
Businesses facing a limited budget and
increasing economic stresses can significantly
reduce operating expenses by
taking some simple environmentallyfriendly
steps.
POWER DOWN
Before leaving for the day, be sure to
shut down all computers and turn off
all the lights. Maximizing computer efficiency
can cut energy consumption by
up to 70 percent. Additionally, use
compact fluorescent light blubs. The
bulbs require less energy and last longer
than traditional light blubs, increasing
energy efficiency and reducing operating
expenses.
PRINT SMARTER
Use environmentally-friendly paper
mills that encourage the renewal of forest
resources. Printing on the lightest
post-consumer content paper available
will help significantly reduce environmental
impact. There are new agri- and
soy-based ink and toner options that
have much less of an environmental impact
than traditional ones. Additionally,
print on both sides of your material
to maximize your space available.
GO PAPERLESS
Think before you print. The average
U.S. office worker goes through 10,000
sheets of paper a year. Posting employee
manuals, invoicing and work-related
content online, rather than
distributing copies, will help to reduce
excess waste. Additionally, when you
Going Green At Work
Simone and Bernie Wilker, owners of AlphaGraphics print shop in Paramus, celebrate their decision
to go green.
receive unwanted catalogs, newsletters
or magazines, request to be removed
from the mailing list.
RECYCLE
Place recycling bins in areas around the
office to encourage environmentallyfriendly
practices. Be sure that employees
are aware of the bins and inform
them that any kind of paper, including
fax paper, envelopes and junk mail can
be recycled.
DESIGN WITH
GREEN IN MIND
When designing a mailer, be sure to
keep size in mind. Be sure to make your
mailer a standard size or shape so as not
to incur higher postage and make
efficient use of the paper so that the
highest number of pieces can be printed
on a single press sheet.
ENCOURAGE CO-WORKERS
Share “green” tips with your colleagues
and encourage them to adopt environmentally-friendly
practices throughout
the workplace and at home. Arranging
an office carpool and eliminating paper
cups are quick and easy ways to reduce
waste and help the environment.
Financial Outlook: 2009
The New Year marks the end of what
has been a tumultuous year, fraught
with economic uncertainty and a
volatile market. It is important to not
look back, but rather focus on the year
ahead. The U.S. economy has the ability
to recover quickly after hard
plunges, especially when aggressive fiscal
and monetary policies are pursued.
There are various sectors in the upcoming
market that present solid opportunities
for growth.
OIL
The recent decline in oil prices has been
met with open arms by the public, however
the absence of high inflation and
loose monetary policy could push prices
higher and research suggests unexpected
rises in oil prices have contributed
to a slowdown in economic
activity. A slow rise in oil prices over
the coming months may be a signal that
U.S. economic activity is shifting into
positive territory. When the United
States begins to secure its economic
foundation, its demand for oil as a vehicle
for growth will raise prices. Additionally,
countries throughout the
world will begin to regain economic
strength, leading to increased demand
for oil.
DIVIDEND INVESTMENT
Dividend investing is a lost art, now
considered to be favored by only academics
and theorists. Many years ago,
investors subscribed to the idea that a
company with solid and consistent dividend
growth was strong and worth the
investment. The saying was, “strong
dividend growth means a strong firm.”
In the last 10 to 15 years some companies
have moved away from offering
dividends at all, thus the strategy lost
effectiveness and favor. There is some
evidence now that shows that valuing
companies’ solely on earnings growth
has proven unstable and unreliable, and
that a return to such fundamental investing
could prove lucrative. Research
has shown that, statistically and mathematically,
consistently increasing dividends
will ultimately drive share prices
higher.
FINANCIALS
In 2008, financial firms endured the
worst losses seen in a long time
throughout the stock market. Many
continue to speculate that the downturn
could have been an overdue market
correction that readjusted inflated
prices. Historically, financial sectors
that perform the worst in the preceding
year have a greater chance of sustaining
gains in the coming year. Firms should
be able to see moderate growth in the
next year to 18 months, as they will
have been cleansed of leverage and distressed
assets. Additionally, with a government
bailout and economic stimulus
likely on the way, the remaining financial
firms are being given several opportunities
to shore up their balance
sheets, create transparency and liquidity,
and secure potential growth opportunities.
GOLD
Gold is usually seen as both a hedge
against inflation and economic downturn,
and has consistently been a more
stable commodity. Gold performs well
in times of a weak dollar and is seen as
bellwether for the economy. As deflationary
fears give way to the rising
growth and comeuppance of inflation,
gold can give us insight into the health
of the economy. In the short-term, gold
can provide moderate returns and a significant
measure of risk management.
Shouldn’t You Deserve That
From Your Financial Institution?
By: Joseph L. Pedone
For the longest time, Commercial Banks
have dominated the Consumer and
Commercial markets. However, after
the recent economic events, consumers
are demanding more from their financial
institution. Today, the security of
consumer investments and savings is
paramount in every depositor’s mind.
And trust plays a key role.
THE BEGINNING OF
CREDIT UNIONS
The idea of a credit union dates back to
the mid 1800s. Widespread crop failures
and the fact that commercial banks
wouldn’t always lend at preferred rates
to the average person, led to the birth of
the people’s bank. Groups of people
pooled their monies together and borrowed
from each other at interest rates
well below those charged by commercial
banks. This union of people was
how credit unions got started. Today
there are over 8,500 credit unions serving
over 85 million Americans.
While existing for hundreds of years all
across the country, the concept of a
credit union is not as well known to
folks in the Northeast. States like
California, Texas and Florida have
embraced the credit union concept.
In these areas, credit union memberships
are often larger than their
commercial counterparts, with one
California credit union boasting close
to 300,000 members.
THE CREDIT UNION
ADVANTAGE
Unlike the commercial banking industry,
credit unions don’t look to Wall
Street for support or report to shareholders.
Additionally, credit unions
aren’t obligated to meet corporate
profit targets. Rather, credit unions
focus on providing each of their members
with superb value.
That value can include a combination of
higher yields on interest bearing CDs
and IRAs as well as the ability for each
of its members to borrow money at very
competitive rates.
SERVICE IS KEY
Credit unions members are provided
with several options in which to handle
The Sweetest Place
in Paramus
Ingrid Krause (1931-2009), with long-time employees and her husband Karl, work as a team to create their famous goodies, including Ingrid's signature candy designs.
Years before the famed Children’s book
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was
published and the 1971 movie Willy
Wonka & the Chocolate Factory premiered,
a budding family-owned business
was beginning to make its mark in
Paramus.
Nestled on a hillside and outlined by
the winding pavement of Route 17,
stands a gingerbread-style house which
serves as the confectionery factory and
store of Mrs. Hanna Krause’s Candy.
But, unlike Willy Wonka’s factory,
golden tickets are not necessary for entrance
into this candy-coated shop. In
between tasting morsels from the sample
tray, you’ll marvel at the quality and
quantity of the products produced in
this small mom and pop shop.
Upon entering the store, visitors are
greeted by the warm aroma of chocolate.
Varieties of assorted chocolates
under glass accent years of history displayed
on walls covered with prized antique
molds, novelties, decorative
containers and a seemingly endless assortment
of mouth-watering goodies.
Established in 1929 by Alfred and
Hanna Krause, Mrs. Hanna Krause’s
Candy has been churning out chocolate
and confectionery treats to long-time
and new patrons from Paramus, surrounding
areas and across the United
States via individual and commercial
orders for eighty years.
Specializing in unique designs and
custom orders, Krause’s has created
more than 200 designs over the years,
including: chocolate pianos, artist
palettes, motorcycles, cartoon characters
and American flags. “Use your
imagination and you can do almost anything,”
says Linda Manzo of Rochelle
Park, waving a hand toward the vast
array of specialty lollipops and favors
that grace an entire wall.
Making candy the “old-fashioned” way,
generations of Krause’s, beginning with
second-generation Ingrid, have learned
the fine art of decorative painting. This
family tradition has given birth to a host
of requests from marzipan shaped cats
to adorn a wedding cake to a recurring
Easter request for a 3-foot chocolate
Easter bunny to a two-foot high, twenty
pound chocolate sleigh.
Holidays, of course, are Krause’s busy
seasons. Valentine’s Day, Easter,
Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas
promise to be a constant whirlwind
year after year. “We’ve filled seasonal
requests from the NY Jets, NY Knicks,
the offices of former New York City
Mayor Koch and former Governor Kean
of New Jersey. The NY Giants also purchased
chocolate pops that they deliv-
ered to children’s hospitals throughout
the area,” commented Linda Manzo.
“During Valentine’s, we go through at
least 90 flats of fresh strawberries to be
chocolate dipped. As for our chocolate
bunnies, we make at least 10,000 during
the Easter season.”
“We get calls from all over the country
for chocolate shipments, especially our
peanut brittle, buttercrunch, Figaroes,
truffles and cordial cherries,” said Karl
Krause. “We have a very loyal customer
base, some of whom have shopped here
since 1959, that have become part of
our family. It’s wonderful to see longtime
customers bring their children and
grandchildren.”
Still a family affair, Linda Manzo and
her younger sister, Karen Ryan of Paramus
with their father, Karl Krause,
carry on the legacy that began with
their grandparents, the late Alfred and
Hanna Krause and in memory of their
mother, Ingrid Krause. In 1982, thirdgeneration
Wayne Sturr opened a second
store with his wife, Gail in Toms
River. At the location next to the Garden
State Plaza, the family’s younger
members; 30 year old Michael and his
wife, Karie, Matthew and Shannon
Ryan ages 19 and 15, and 13 year-olds
Ashley and Alyssa Manzo – along with
an additional staff of eight — take great
pride in the history held within the
walls of the gingerbread-like store and
that they’ve yet to be stumped by an offbeat
design or customer’s special request.
“Chocolate is in our blood,” said
Karl Krause. “Hopefully, we’ll continue
to provide original creations for many
generations to come.”
history, visit Mrs. Hanna Krause’s
In March, 25-year old Dan Glickberg will
play a major role in opening Fairway
Market’s first New Jersey location: a
50,000 square-foot superstore in the
Fashion Center on Rt. 17 North. Known
for incorporating the services of the corner
butcher and baker, the freshness of a
farmer’s and seafood market, and the
convenience of conventional groceries all
in one place, Fairway Market is rich in
75+ years of family history and tradition.
As a fourth generation member of the
Fairway Market founding family, Dan
Glickberg has spent his life around food,
but a career in the family business wasn’t
necessarily the path this young man
thought he would find himself traveling.
“I remember going on family vacations
when I was very young,” said Dan, 25.
“We would stop at every supermarket we
passed and my father would scrutinize
Fairway Market
A Family Affair
Steve Jenkins, specialty food buyer and cheesemonger, has been with Fairway for over 20 years.
everything in the store, especially the
produce. He would pick an apple, twirl it
around in his hand and put it back on the
stand, disapprovingly shaking his head. I
let him take a few steps away and then I
would mimic his every move.””
In high school, Dan had first foray at
work in the family business. A customer
service internship at Fairway’s
Plainview, Long Island location kept his
interest, but he remained focused on a
career as a sports writer. After graduating
high school, Dan attended Trinity
College to major in Creative Writing.
His dad, Howard Glickberg, never pressured
Dan to follow in the family business.
But Dan sensed that his father
had a twinge of disappointment.
“I thought I would give it another
chance,” said Dan. “When I was a sophomore
in college, I became a waiter at
the Broadway store’s Cafe. It was a
great experience, working with people,
and getting to know more about the
day-to-day operations of the business.
That may have been the turning point
for me.”
FAIRWAY’S BEGINNINGS…
It was Dan’s grandfather, Nathan, who
opened a fruit and vegetable store at
the present location on 74th Street and
Broadway more than 75 years ago. Leo
Glickberg, Nathan’s son, worked in the
store until he joined the U.S. Army Air
Corps during World War II. While Leo
was away, Nathan and his wife Mary
opened additional fruit and vegetable
stores in Manhattan.
Following his discharge from the Air
Corps, Leo opened a fruit and vegetable
store on 82nd Street and Broadway. In
COURTESY OF FAIRWAY MARKETS
1954, Nathan and Leo consolidated their
operations to the 74th Street store, adding
groceries, meat, cheese, dairy products
and frozen foods to their already famous
produce displays. They named the store
“Fairway” after a family-run toy and
stuffed animal manufacturing business.
In 1974, Howard Glickberg joined the
family business and transformed the
store from a mundane supermarket operation
into the formal beginnings of the
high-end, low-price specialty store that it
is today.
… AND ITS FUTURE
“My dad is a great teacher,” said Dan.
“He has really taught me the business.
When we opened our Brooklyn store, I
was there every day - unloading trucks,
stocking shelves, training employees,
and watching the floor managers work.
I knew this was my opportunity to become
completely entrenched in operations.
When my dad took some time to
handle other aspects of the business, I
assumed more of his day-to-day responsibilities.
It has been three years since I
became part of the business and I couldn’t
be happier. I’m very lucky to be involved
at such an exciting time in
Fairway Market’s history.”
Dan will be involved in every aspect of
the Paramus store opening. The location
will be the fifth in the Fairway Market
family. Two stores are located in Manhattan,
one in Plainview, Long Island
and another in Red Hook, Brooklyn. In
his relatively young career with Fairway,
Dan has brought various new ideas that
celebrate the company’s past and define
its future. One such initiative is the creation
of www.discoverfairway.com - a
web site featuring weekly tips and facts
written by one of Fairway’s experts.
“People like Ray Venezia, our Meat Director
and a third generation butcher, and
Steve Jenkins our specialty food buyer and
cheesemonger who has been with Fairway
for over 20 years and who literally ‘wrote
the book’ on cheese, are a sample of the
incredible food knowledge that is being
shared on the site,” said Dan. “We also fea-
ture recipe contests and a place for viewers
to ask questions or share comments.”
The site’s number one comment, according
to Dan: ‘Shoppers always want to
know why we don’t open a store closer to
their home.’
“In the spirit of satisfying that comment,
we’re excited to cross the bridge and
bring New Jersey families the finest se-
lection of foods for every appetite and
budget,” said Glickberg, who has been
asked even more times by transplanted
New Yorkers, now living in North Jersey,
to build a store near them. “Our hope is
to make Fairway as iconic a supermarket
here in Paramus as it is in New York.”
Markets and locations, please visit
meats, fish, baked goods, fruit, vegetables, cheeses, coffees, gourmet and organic foods.
Fairway Market’s featured produce section boasts high-quality produce at low prices thanks to a policy of
buying directly from farmers and producers.
A New Year,ANew Plan
As I consider “what to do” for the
New Year, I soberly think, isn’t it just
another day? The celebration factor, I
believe, is because we have a moment
in time to reflect on our lives, our careers
and our goals. Once that reflection
is complete, we then have a unique
opportunity to move forward in a new
and improved direction.
In my business: real estate, the rewards
come in the form of helping individuals
and families achieve their dream. Home
ownership has long been and is still the
American dream, especially in 2009.
As we begin this new year, mortgage
rates have fallen to historic lows! Mortgage
money is available to qualified
buyers through many local lenders. The
new legislature promises more opportu-
nities for qualified buyers. Banks are restructuring
loans to help keep people in
their homes. Local home prices are correcting
and properly priced homes are
selling. If homeownership is one of your
resolutions this year, I hope you won’t
be deterred by those doom and
gloomers. After all, there may never be
a better time than in 2009!
I had to laugh when I read about someone
cleaning their desk for the New
Year. If I did that, I probably wouldn’t
be able to find a thing! I guess this new
years’ ritual, for some, is because in the
flurry of our daily activities, we are always
striving to do things a little better,
a little faster, maybe a little more economically
or even “greener.”
But the best thing to do in 2009 is be a
little kinder, to enjoy the journey and
realize that we are writing a legacy for
our family and neighbors. We should
all live our days to the fullest, more generously,
more sensitively, more thoughtful
of the consequences of apathy and
just “do the right thing” in 2009. As
each new dawn brings hope and promise
for leaving the past in the past and
making a fresh start with the gift of
today; we forge ahead to make the best
of the blessing of a new day and a new
year!
So let’s all make a plan, write it down
and face whatever tomorrow will bring.
Happy New Year!
Step by Step to a healthier you
By: Kimberly Pinnix
At the beginning of 2009, many people
made New Year’s resolutions to eat
healthier, lose weight and exercise
more. These pledges are helping to alleviate
a growing problem throughout
the United States. The figures are staggering.
Obesity costs American businesses
$12.7 billion annually in medical
expenses and $225.8 billion in healthrelated
productivity losses. Heart disease
and stroke continue to be the
nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, and
each year Americans suffer 1.2 million
heart attacks. Furthermore, 140 million
people – 66 percent of Americans –
are overweight.
Americans are also working longer
hours. In fact, Americans are working
an astonishing 164 more hours per year
than 20 years ago. More of the nation’s
workforce is in sedentary occupations,
which leads to physical inactivity and in
turn increases an individual’s risk for
heart disease and stroke. Sixty percent
of surveyed CEOs cite healthcare as
their top cost pressure.
Simple daily exercise can help combat
this growing epidemic. The American
Heart Association provides simple recommendations
to help get you on the
right track toward living a heart healthy
life.
• Go for a short walk each day.
• Park farther away from entrances at
the shopping mall to walk the extra distance.
• Work in the garden or mow the grass.
• Do housework yourself instead of hiring
someone else to do it.
• Stand up while talking on the telephone.
• At work, take the stairs instead of the
elevator.
• Take along a jump rope in your suitcase
when you travel to exercise in the
hotel room.
• Join a recreational club that emphasizes
physical activity.
Studies show that more than 20 percent
of New Year’s resolutions are broken
within the first week of January. So
what can you do to stick to a heart
healthy life?
Exercise with a friend – Finding an exercise
buddy can help make time go by
quicker and will help you to look forward
to daily exercise.
Don’t overdo it – Try not to push yourself
too hard in the beginning. Soreness
is a normal part of exercise but if you are
in serious pain you have done too much.
Stick to a schedule – Plan your exercise
time and stick to the schedule. A calendar
can help motivate you to cross off days
after you finished heart healthy activities.
Keep it up – Remember the saying,
“something is better than nothing.” Even
if you only have time for 15 minutes of
exercise, every little bit can help put you
on the path toward a healthier lifestyle.
Start! is a great way for busy Americans
to find the time to make a real change for
to a Harvard Alumni Health Study,
adults gain two hours of life expectancy
for each hour of regular exercise, even if
they don’t begin exercising until middle
age. In other words, walking translates
into a longer, healthier life.
The American Heart Association has
built Start! around four key elements:
MyStart! Online, a Web-based fitness
and nutrition tracker, is the hub for a
Many people suffer from the blues during the dark and cold
Winter months. Our appreciation of the Spring is displayed
on the first warm weekend of the season when the parks and
streets are filled with people walking, children riding bicycles,
scooters and skateboards and playing outdoor games.
Dogs experience similar joy in relishing the outdoors. They crave
activity, exercise and attention. Inviting our dogs to join us outside
fosters the bond between owner and canine companion. Dogs
enjoy simply walking with us or playing fetch. The more adventurous
The Five Components of a
Successful Fitness Program
By: Mike Epstein
I am often asked a very simple question:
“what makes a good exercise program?”
My answer is always simpler:
“anything that makes you MOVE!”
While that is an oversimplified answer
of an even more complicated question,
it does hit the nail on the head.
Moving more and making healthy
food choices is the best way to assure
your body is in shape and working well.
Utilizing these components together
can help you achieve your fitness goals.
Let’s examine the five components of
healthy living a little further and take a
look at what makes up an effective
fitness program.
One: Resistance Training. A vital part of
any program, resistance training can
take on many forms (weight training,
exercise machines, exercise bands, etc.).
Also referred to as strength training,
this type of exercise has many benefits
including: building lean muscle tissue,
increasing strength, increasing bone
density and helping the body burn
more fat.
Two: Cardiovascular Conditioning.
Also referred to as aerobic activity, this
type of exercise is vital for helping to
maintain a healthy weight, improve cardiovascular
function, increase energy
and stamina and improve circulation.
Doing cardio/aerobic activity for 30
minutes a day should be a part of everyone’s
exercise program.
Three: Proper Nutrition. For most people
this is one of the hardest things to
do and understand, but just knowing
how many calories you are taking in
each day – using your recommended
daily intake from your physician – will
help you make better food choices.
Four: Proper Supplementation. In
many cases, we just do not get enough
nutrients through processed and prepared
foods. To ensure proper nutrients,
taking a multi-vitamin, an
anti-oxidant, or other nutrients that
may be helpful in completing your personal
nutritional needs.
Five: Professional Assistance. It is very
hard to design, develop and implement
the right exercise program. Seeking the
assistance of a fitness professional, is
the best way for you to make sure you
are using proper technique, preventing
injury, and seeing results.
WHAT IS LASIK?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)
is the most advanced procedure
in correcting nearsightedness,
farsightedness and astigmatism and is
one of the most frequently utilized elective
procedures in America.
AM I A CANDIDATE?
If you’re over the age of 18 and have
nearsightedness, farsightedness or
astigmatism you may be a good candidate.
In General, Good Candidates Must:
•Be at Least 18 Years Old
•Be in Good General Health
•Have No Health Issues
Affecting the Eyes
•Have No Active Eye Conditions
Which May Affect Healing
•Have a Stable Vision Prescription
for at Least One Year
A comprehensive Pre-operative exam is
necessary to determine candidacy.
HOW SAFE IS THE
PROCEDURE?
In 1995, after 10 full years of clinical trials,
the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) approved the use of the excimer
laser in the U.S. Since its introduction,
laser vision correction has passed the
rigid safety standards and intensive
scrutiny of public health agencies and
medical professionals.
WHAT LASER TECHNOLOGIES
ARE AVAILABLE?
There are multiple laser technologies
available on the market today. Based
on your individual vision characteris-
Considering laser
vision correction?
What to consider and how to save with your FSA
tics, your doctor will recommend which
is the best match for you.
Broad Beam Technology - This technology
is good for patients with low
nearsighted prescriptions, small astigmatism
and small pupils.
Flying Spot Technology - This technology
provides a larger, smoother treatment
area that reduces the likelihood of
glare and halos. It is especially recommended
for patients with any significant
degree of nearsightedness,
farsightedness, some astigmatism and
medium to large pupils.
Custom Wavefront Technology - Custom
LASIK is the most recently approved
laser technology. Custom
Wavefront technology corrects not only
nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism, but also treats defects that
affect contrast sensitivity and night vision.
Wavefront measurement creates a
custom “fingerprint” of your complete
visual system, which guides the laser
for a precise treatment.
SEE SIGNIFICANT SAVING
BY UTILIZING PRE-TAX
FSA DOLLARS
Don’t think you can afford LASIK? A
Flexible Spending Account (FSA), an
employer-sponsored benefit that allows
you to pay for eligible medical expenses,
is a great way to save money by
utilizing your pre-tax dollars. Laser vision
correction is currently an eligible
expense under the IRS guidelines
(www.irs.gov), but keep in mind that
the IRS and/or your employer may
modify its list of eligible expenses.
Refer to your employer if you have
questions.
Teach Your Child the
Value of Organization
By: Dr. Raymond J. Huntington
In today’s world children are often involved
in numerous extracurricular activities that
have many parents working as a part-time
chauffeur, driving their kids from one activity
to the next. With so many activities
crammed into a 24-hour day, organizational
skills can be a helpful way to manage
time more effectively, minimize chaos and
achieve academic success. Here are a few
ways you can help your child improve this
important skill:
GET READY THE NIGHT BEFORE
Prepare for the day ahead by laying out an
outfit, packing a lunch and putting all necessary
items in your child’s backpack each
night to avoid a hectic morning rush. Consider
creating an out-the-door checklist and
posting it on the door so that your child will
have a daily reminder of the things he or
she should remember to bring to school.
WRITE DOWN
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS
If your child relies on his or her memory to
remember what was assigned for homework
or when something is due, he or she is
likely to forget something. Provide your
child with a blank notebook or simple day
planner in which he or she can record
homework assignments, upcoming tests
and other important dates. Teach your
child to mark off assignments when he or
she finishes them and use a new page for
each day.
USE A FAMILY CALENDAR
Busy families may find themselves scheduled
from dawn until dusk with school,
work, after-school activities, sports, dinner,
homework and more. A white-board calendar
may help every member of the family
stay on top of upcoming events. Hang the
calendar in a place where everyone can add
to and view it, and encourage your child to
remind you of responsibilities that he or she
would like to add.
ASSIGN CHORES
Age-appropriate house chores can teach
children cleanliness and responsibility. Activities
like loading the dishwasher after
dinner, picking up toys, games, and books,
and keeping a tidy room are simple, yet important
ways to show your child the value
of organization at home.
USE FOLDERS
Loose paper often gets crumpled or torn in
your child’s backpack. Provide your child
with two-sided folders for each school subject
(or a three ring binder with several
folders in it). Your child can store unfinished
homework on one side and to-behanded-in
assignments on the other.
DEVELOP A HOME
ORGANIZATION SYSTEM
A messy desk can lead to procrastination at
homework time. Provide your child with
trays or folders that can be stored on a
bookshelf or on his or her desk for blank
paper, graded homework assignments and
other important items. Encourage your
child to keep and file important documents
and throw away unnecessary clutter on a
regular basis.
In addition to the benefits of streamlining
your day, organization offers many more
advantages including:
Letting your child know that daily tasks
don’t have to be overwhelming and time
consuming when a plan is already in place.
Fewer forgotten tasks.
Easing your child’s efforts to prioritize
school assignments.
Helping your child develop the ability to
multitask.
Helping Children Learn the
Value of Money
Submitted By: Richard Rosen
Most of what children learn about managing
money comes from their parents,
and we all hope that our offspring will
grow up to be financially responsible
adults. Here are some ways you can
teach your kids to save and instill a
healthy dose of financial responsibility
that they can carry with them to adulthood.
Start early. Even very young children
can learn to tell different coins apart.
Give them each a bank and teach them
to deposit their coins and watch their
banks fill up.
Make savings a habit. Encourage
children to save a portion of their income,
even if it’s only a small amount
from a monthly allowance, earnings
from a lemonade stand or a part-time
job later on.
Give regular allowances. Allowances
give kids the chance to manage cash
“hands on,” a chance to practice how to
save regularly and plan their spending.
Of course, the amount should fit the
child and be determined by you.
Open an account in your child’s
name. Savings can show youngsters
how their money can earn more money
through compound interest. They will
also see that their funds are in a safe
place, recorded and available when
they need it. Regular deposits, however
small, will help them feel comfortable
handling their own accounts. Referring
to their statements reminds them that
their savings are there and growing.
Help plan a budget. Have your kids
practice writing down what they’ll buy
during the week and how much each
item costs. Then, suggest that they compare
the list to their weekly income. If it
doesn’t add up, they’ll have to prioritize
their immediate needs and wants.
Encourage goal setting. Help your
kids acquire the savings habit by helping
them make a “wish list” and a
schedule for saving with a target date
for acquiring the wished-for items.
Encourage money-earning ventures.
Suggest that older children find creative
ways to earn money beyond their
weekly allowances—doing special
chores or seeking jobs around the
neighborhood such as raking leaves,
running errands or pet sitting.
Issue an IOU if you extend credit
to your children and set a repayment
schedule. You may want to
charge interest at a nominal rate to
demonstrate the cost of borrowing.
Show the effects of inflation. To
demonstrate how prices have gone
up over the years, sometime when
you’re at the library with your children
look up past ads in the newspaper
archives for movie tickets, bikes, sneakers
and other favorite spending goals.
Then discuss what things cost when you
were a child and even when your children
were younger.
Acquaint them with stocks. Make a
game of teaching kids about stocks and
how they work. Have everyone in the
family pick a favorite company and “invest”
$100. Show them how to keep
track of the stock’s daily progress
through the newspaper’s financial section.
Explain that stocks represent ownership
in a company. Then describe how
the price of a stock generally follows the
company’s progress and how—as the
company’s fortunes may rise—so potentially
does its stock.
Encourage financial reading. As your
children grow older, provide financial
magazines and discuss investment
choices. Invite them to meet your financial
advisor and to attend investment
seminars with you.
Fiscal responsibility won’t happen
overnight. If you begin early, however,
by the time your children are ready to
start investing on their own, the ground
work will be in place for them to potentially
become savvy investors.
How you can stress less
in the workplace!
Ahh, the New Year. Time for a
clean start. But what to resolve
and how to go about achieving it
can create stress in many – the very
stress that some resolve to avoid!
Deadlines, pressures and major
projects are some of the most frequent
stressors at the office. Some
would argue that these are largely
out of our control, so how could
one ever hope to reduce stress
when facing these challenges?
Think Positively. Research from
the Journal of Integrative Psychological
and Behavioral Science, indicates
that techniques designed
to eliminate negative thought
loops can have important positive
effects on stress, emotions and key
physiological systems. Thus, individuals
may have greater control
over their minds, bodies and
health than previously suspected.
Rest, Relaxation and Sleep:
When many people are pressed by
bigger responsibilities at work, their
typical response is more intense work in
order to resolve them. This may lead to
longer hours, canceled vacations and
reduced sleep time. If this practice persists
for a long time, health deterioration
and burnout is a very real risk. It is
important to provide ample relaxation
time, enabling your body to decompress
and stress levels to normalize.
Physical Exercise: It’s not the first time
you’ve heard this, but frequent exercise
still remains as one of the best physical
stress-reduction techniques available.
Exercise not only improves health and
reduces stress, it also relaxes tense muscles
and helps you to sleep. Exercise
also increases circulation and helps provide
more nutrition and oxygen to the
body’s cells, enabling the brain to tackle
more difficult tasks.
KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES
STRESS FREE
Know Your Employees: Understanding
each employees’ personality, family,
hobbies, and education can help
you in alleviating their stress.
Communicate a Shared Vision:
Employees need to understand the
organizational and group’s mission,
vision, objectives and goals. They
must also feel that their work is directly
contributing to those pursuits.
Focus on Productivity: It is wise to
focus on productivity and be somewhat
lenient on strict rules. People
appreciate when management acknowledges
and takes care of their
personal needs. Sometimes their
gratitude drives them to be more
hard working.
Acknowledge Achievement: People
are rewarded by acknowledgement,
more than any other reward. Acknowledgement
of small and every
contribution makes people feel important
and want to give more.
Thank Them: Dale Carnegie’s legendary
statement “Be hearty in your
approbation and lavish in your
praise.” It works like a magic.
Additional benefits of exercise:
Improves blood flow to the brain,
bringing additional sugars and
oxygen that may be needed when
you are thinking intensely.
When tackling a tough issue, the
neurons of your brain function
more intensely. As they do this,
they can build up toxic waste
products that can cause foggy
thinking. By exercising, you speed
the flow of blood through your
brain, moving these waste products
faster.
Exercise can cause release of
chemicals called endorphins into
your blood stream. These give you
a feeling of happiness and positively
affect your overall sense of
well-being.
There is also evidence that physically
fit people have less extreme
physiological responses when
under pressure than those who
are not. This means that fit people
are more able to handle the longterm
effects of stress.
Planning and Assessment: Researches
show that each minute in planning reduces
execution time by 8 to 10 minutes.
Planning provides clarity of
direction and assessment provides a
sense of control.
Delegation: If someone else can do the
task, it should be delegated.
Sense of Humor: Humor changes attitude
and therefore makes our brain and
body function more efficiently to handle
causes of stress.
With today’s recessionary downturn of
financial markets, record numbers of
small businesses are not only struggling
to increase sales, but working tirelessly
to keep afloat by turning to traditional
However, in earnest attempts to turn a
small business owners is putting all
three ways to grow your business —
putting your effort, money and resources
almost always forgetting two additional
methods for growth.
Method two. Increase the average sale
ticket sold to every customer. McDonalds
is a classic example of how this is
done. Every counter representative is
trained to ask you “would you like fries
with your order?” or “would you like to
super size?”
The goal here is to have you buy something
extra and to increase the average
sale ticket price. They have already paid
GoDaddy.com is another great example
of increasing your sales. Having spoken
I’ve experienced GoDaddy.com’s marketing
problem is fixed, you’re ecstatic you’re
one step closer to a relaxing night with
American Idol and they sweep in with
an offer of a “non-advertised special.”
GoDaddy.com is taking what is normally
thought of as a liability and capitalizing
on the opportunity to speak
with customers to turn your problem
into their sale.
Method Three. Extend the lifetime
value of your customer. Never look at a
customer transaction as a one-time
event. Your goal should be to increase
the number of visits of your customer.
This is where your Customer/Client list
is critical. Studies show that it is up to
seven times more expensive to market
to a new customer versus marketing to
your own in-house customer list. When
I was in the women’s clothing business,
the first thing done once we had a new
shipment scheduled to arrive was to divide
up our client book and make calls
to past customers informing them of
our new collection. Remind your client
the day before a new shipment or the
month of a contract anniversary, the
more connected you are the more appreciated
your client will feel. And isn’t
a happy customer a return customer?
It’s just that simple. So while most
business owners are focusing on the
most expensive aspect of finding and
acquiring new customers, I encourage
you to focus and work with your current
customers for maximum gain and
minimal cost.
Craftsman Turns Cabinet-Making Into a Successful Business
Some businesses are built out of necessity. Some are built out
of innovation. And others are built out of passion. Fred
Salerno was raised in a family where craftsmanship was an
art, a passion and a way of living. Today it is the successful
Manor House Cabinetry on Route 17 North in Paramus.
Salerno’s father was a furniture-maker from Sicily. When he
brought the family to America in 1956, he made ends meet by
making cabinets in the family home. “When I was old enough
to hold a screwdriver, my father would drill a hole into a cabinet
and I would manually insert the screw,” said Salerno.
“I guess that was my first introduction to the industry!”
As a teen, Salerno recalls helping his father grow the business,
working countless hours after school and on weekends.
In 1984, Fred Salerno took his homegrown skills and went
into the cabinet manufacturing business, where he learned all
phases of the operation from purchasing raw materials to installation.
“I developed a passion not only for cabinetry, but also for
home remodeling,” said Salerno. “Whether designing cabinets
or an entire home remodel, I really enjoyed taking projects
from blueprint to reality. It was in 2006 that I decided to
take that love and go out on my own.”
Salerno left the cabinet manufacturing business in 2006. He
convinced his wife to join him in starting Manor House Cabinetry
Inc., which similar to his father’s business, operated out
of the couple’s home at startup. However, the couple quickly
moved operations to the business’ current location at 586
Route 17 North, Paramus.
Today, Manor House Cabinetry offers clients a complete
range of services and products, from flooring to countertops,
bathroom fixtures and yes, cabinetry! The firm is also a NJ
Licensed Home Improvement contractor, so they can also
install the products they sell. And, customers not sure about
color choices, locations of cabinetry and appliances or
Combining function, creativity and aesthetics, Manor House Cabinetry creates kitchen-space designs that offer efficient cooking and pleasant dining experiences.
“We’re different,” said Salerno. “We
have something for everyone and all
budgets. I was taught early in life not to
turn away business - big or small. I love
what I do and truly enjoy helping all
clients make their space a home.”
