Family Learning
Archery
Year 7 student Jack Vasey looks
back on the family learning
archery session that took place
on Tuesday 14th June.
I really enjoyed family archery it
was really cool, fun and a great
challenge. There are few sports
in which I can take part with
my family but this was one we
could do together. We learned
how to use a bow and arrow in
a variety of different ways. My
favourite challenge was aiming
at a target in which I gained my
family points which was good
because my mom kept missing.
We learned how to use a long
bow which I found hard to pull
back as the string is really tight
but when I let go the arrow flew
a really long way. We finished
off with all the arrows in the
ground everybody lined up
and continuously firing arrows
until they were all used, it was
like being a medieval archer.
Archery is really good fun for all
of the family I would definitely
recommend it.
According to Mrs Vasey,” This
session was fantastic we all had
an excellent time. I was unsure
as to whether there would be
enough for us to do for the
two hours we were there, but
if anything we ran out of time.
Thank you for this activity much
appreciated. Thank you again for
all the wonderful activities Jack
and I have been able to attend
this year we really do appreciate
it. All the activities have been
good fun and holiday club has
been a huge help to me and
great fun for Jack.”
Keeping up with the Children Courses at the CTC from September.
We will be starting Keeping up
with the Children Courses at the
CTC from September following
the successful programme this
spring. Here Mrs Porter gives
feedback on the programme and
highlights its value.
I’ve really enjoyed the
opportunities at the CTC to
help me work with my child and
help them with their progress. I
would thoroughly recommend
the Keeping up with the children
classes in English and Maths as
they really help bring you up
to speed with what they do in
English and Maths in Key Stage
3 so we can check what they are
doing and help them in these
crucial subjects. It does not
matter what ability you have
in the subjects as the teacher
guides you through everything.
Everybody is in the same boat
whether you have left school
recently or some years ago as the
pace is suitable for all. Even if you
have not pickled everything up it
doesn’t matter because what you
do pick up is invaluable. If you do
not like it, you are not forced to
carry on but we all found it better
than we thought it would be.
You also have the opportunity
to meet other parents and have
more contact with teachers. For
example we met Miss DeSilva
who showed us their progress
on tracking grids and told
us what they were achieving
and what progress they were
making in terms of their ability
and compared to peers. She
was able to spend more time
with us explaining this than we
would be able to have on parents
evening. Through this we could
also voice concerns, for example
my daughter relies heavily on
a calculator whereas we were
told they were being taught
mental arithmetic in addition
to calculators. Miss DeSilva
assured me she would look into
this so my daughter was not at
a disadvantage. Overall a 100%
positive experience and I would
not hesitate to participating in
future programmes be they a one
off introduction to geography,
history etc or a six week
programme. I would say 99%
of parents are unsure what PSE
and Citizenship are for example
so something like this would be
useful too.
