Year 9 Community Art Project
The CTC Art and Design Faculty
have been instrumental in
supporting the community and
using our specialism to make
a positive contribution to our
community. Here ??? describes
the work they have completed as
part of their students that is now
a key feature of the Pump and
the benefits this has had.
According to Charlotte
Linforth, Project Director at the
The Pump
“The art work produced by
Kingshurst Academy students
has really helped The Pump
develop it’s identify and mission
as a centre for young people.
With a diverse collection of
inspired work, we have been
able to convey our vision of
being a beacon for the personal
development of young people.
The work itself reflects a
multitude of issues young people
face and acts as a catalyst for
discussion and debate whilst
showcasing the many talents of
local young people.”
Junior Football Organiser Award
During the summer holidays,
I enrolled on a ‘Junior Football
Organiser Award’ (JFO) that took
place from 9:30am – 3:30pm
within college. The course
consisted of 1 day that was
full of new achievements and
skills to be learnt, all of which
contributed to an enjoyable day.
To start off the day, we discussed
as a group the good and bad
qualities you should look for in
a referee. This included good
qualities like patience, being
unbiased and not discriminating
against players for any reason.
The bad qualities included
inconsistency in decisions,
poor time-keeping and lack of
health and safety checks. We
produced mind maps displaying
these ideas and then presented
them back to the rest of the
participants on the course.
We then went on to study the
importance of warm up exercises
before playing in a football
match. The reasons for this
being, to avoid muscle injuries
and getting into the mental and
physical state for exercise. We
also looked at the importance of
health and safety on and around
the football pitch. This included
the removal of any litter/objects
within the game area that
could potentially be a hazard.
Also making sure the ground
was even with no pot holes or
ditches.
Then, we put the theory of warm
up exercises and health and
safety into practise out on the
field. As soon as we got out onto
the field, we cleared the area of
any litter that was on the ground.
We then participated in warm
ups to see how effective they
are for ourselves. We did warm
up games like relay races which
increased heart rate as well as
building up the mental state of
competitiveness. This was a fun
experience and revealed to us
the relevance of working as a
team in order to succeed.
After experiencing different
activities, we were then able
to put some of these ideas
forward and use them to create
our own activities to be led by
us later on. We were assigned
to groups where we all came
up with an activity to teach to
younger people. This consisted of
dribbling, passing and shooting
exercises resulting in a football
match. We then taught these
exercises to children who were
taking part in a football camp
during the summer holidays. This
allowed us to evaluate all the
skills we had learnt on the course
and our performance as a ‘junior
football organiser.’
Overall, the day was very
successful with all students
taking part passing the course
and gaining a JFO qualification.
At the end of the day, the
opportunity was presented to us
to take this qualification further
by progressing onto an FA Level
7 in refereeing. The course was
a brilliant experience that helps
greatly when writing a CV to
show leadership and teamwork
skills. Hopefully the course
will be running again and it is
recommended as something to
definitely take part in!
