Students at CTC Kingshurst Academy Celebrate
Success as IB Results are Released
Students at the CTC Kingshurst
Academy have been celebrating
their successes, as results for
the IB Diploma Programme
were published across the
world on Friday 6th July 2012.
Students will be heading to top
UK institutions in September
to study a variety of subject
disciplines as diverse as medicine
and music.
The CTC Kingshurst Academy has
been offering the International
Baccalaureate Diploma
Programme as an alternative to
traditional A levels since 1990.
The programme is designed
to give students a broad,
well-rounded international
education and the skills needed
by universities, employers and
society at large.
Ann Jones, expressed her
thoughts on the recent IB
Diploma results at the CTC
Kingshurst Academy;
“I am delighted to be able
to offer my congratulations
to this year’s cohort of year
13 IB students. Their very
impressive results reflect the
considerable hard work and
effort that so many of them
have put into their studies over
the past two years. In the case
of many individual students,
their excellent results mark the
beginning of those “dream”
careers in medicine, teaching,
law and music (to name but
a few of the professions our
students will, eventually, be
joining). Results like this would
not be possible without the
hard work and dedication of
staff who have supported,
cajoled and encouraged in equal
measure throughout the two
years and I am very grateful to
them all. I am very proud of this
year’s cohort of IB students and
they can feel confident that their
results compare with some of
the best the world has to offer.
I know we will be seeing some
‘Liam Barrett achieves the
to study Medicine’
very bright stars in the future –
good luck to you all”.
The IB Diploma Programme
ensures students do not narrow
their course of study too early
and prepares them well for
higher education and the world
of work. Evidence suggests that
as a result, IB students perform
better at university: figures from
the Higher Educations Statistics
Agency (HESA) show that a
higher percentage of IB students
achieve a first class honours
award compared to students
holding A levels or equivalent
qualifications (19% versus 14.5%),
and that drop-out rates are lower
amongst IB students.
Former CTC Kingshurst Academy
IB student Joe Barry graduated
from Warwick University in 2011
with a first class honours degree
in Accounting and Finance. Joe
is currently employed by Deloitte
LLP. Reflecting on his time at the
CTC Kingshurst Academy as an IB
student Joe stated;
“The IB vastly improved my
time management skills. My
experiences as Student Union
President at the CTC Kingshurst
Academy and the opportunities
to attend international political
student events gave me the
confidence and composure
to present to large groups of
people and helped me deal with
stressful situations such as job
interviews and presentations”.
This year 16 students achieved
the IB Diploma with 30 or more
IB points at the Academy. In
order to achieve the IB Diploma
students must secure a
minimum of 24 IB points as well
as completing a programme
of TOK, CAS and writing an
Extended Essay. Our highest
attaining student Alexandra
Brant achieved a staggering
39 IB points which included a
7 in Higher Level Chemistry. IB
students are awarded individual
grades for their six subjects that
range from a Level 1 to 7. The
highest grade for an individual
subject is a Level 7. As well as a
Level 7 in Chemistry our students
also achieved the highest
grade in a range of subjects
which included Biology, Dance,
Geography, Maths Studies and
Psychology.
Students from the CTC
Kingshurst Academy join nearly
5,000 others in the UK who took
the IB Diploma Programme
this year, and nearly 1 million
others educated by the IB since
it was founded over 40 years
ago. Statistics show that the UK
compares well internationally,
with UK students consistently
scoring higher than the world
average for the IB Diploma
Programme. And as an
international programme, IB
has not suffered from the grade
inflation which affects some
national qualifications.
Adrian Kearney, Regional
Director, Europe, Middle
East and Africa, International
Baccalaureate, welcomed their
results, saying;
“We want to congratulate
students at the CTC Kingshurst
Academy on their achievements.
By providing critical thinking
skills and a breadth of
experience and knowledge,
the IB Diploma Programme
ideally prepares students for
both higher education and
the world of work. Those who
have achieved their IB Diploma
should feel confident that they
are already a step ahead and
uniquely placed to excel at
university and beyond. I would
like to wish them the very best
and I look forward to hearing
of their accomplishments
through our global network of
IB alumni”.
