BTEC Music What will I study? The course has many practical aspects and covers many different styles and areas of popular Music. As well as playing in a wide variety of styles and situations, students will learn about the business side of the music industry and the way that popular music has shaped society Areas of study include: • Pop music in practice • Working and developing as a musical ensemble • Music and society • Musical theatre • Music in the community • Music performance session styles • Song writing techniques How will I be assessed? The course is assessed exclusively with coursework over a total of 18 units. What coursework will I need to do? The course is made up of 18 units and each has a coursework requirement. For some units, the work may be mainly written, but for other units the emphasis will be on practical skills. Every unit has a written work element. Some units may only have one large piece of coursework attached to them – others may have up to five smaller elements, each having their own piece of work attached. Case study Chloe Evans – Studied the BTEC Popular Music course at the CTC and achieved a DDD – the highest possible mark. She successfully completed a Music Performance course at Coventry University and she is now a successful independent concert promoter and musician in the Coventry area. Glen Boden – Studied the BTEC Popular Music course at the CTC and after successfully passing went on to Leeds College of Music to study Popular/Music and Technology. He has released a number of albums under his own name and now fronts a successful local band, Capital Sun who have been produced by world famous music producer Chris Tsangerides. Martin Knowles – After successfully completing the BTEC Popular Music course, Martin started work as an independent producer/DJ and has released a number of dance singles, many of which have been played on national radio, including Radio One.
BTEC Sport and Excercise Science What will I study? The BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in future sport and recreation industry, or for entry to a sports related Higher National or undergraduate degree programme. It may also allow progression onto a physiotherapy or sports therapy programme. Practical ability is not a criterion for the course but it is geared for those interested in everything of a sporting nature and motivated towards furthering their own academic knowledge of the topics outlined below. • Anatomy for Sport and Exercise • Sport and Exercise Physiology • Sport and Exercise Psychology • Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Sciences • Research Project in Sport and Exercise Sciences • Sports Biomechanics in Action Specialist Units: • Individual Sports • Training and Fitness for Sport • Sport and Exercise Massage • Sports Nutrition • Sport and Society • Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise • Sports Injuries • Sports Coaching • Practical Team Sports • Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology • Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology • Work-based Experience in Sport Numerous visits will take place each year in order to reinforce learning. In recent academic years, these have included taking students to a range of universities in order to utilise their expertise and resources. Examples include Birmingham University, Wolverhampton University and Coventry University. Further opportunities and visits have also been provided in the form of visits to other institutions such as Lilleshall Centre for Sports Excellence and coaching form a PGA golf instructor over a period of twelve weeks. This years’ students will also visit St George’s Park the new home to the English FA and England teams and explore the opportunities that are available in sport science. How will I be assessed? All assessment is internally assessed by a teacher through a portfolio of work produced by the student for each unit that they study. The method of assessment will be varied according to the nature of the qualification being studied and will range from formal assignments, to delivering a presentation or being observed. There are NO exams. Case study Tom Smith studied Sport Science with the CTC in 2008-2010. He has since moved on to University studying to become a Physical Education teacher through PGCE placements and Extended Services opportunities.
