BTEC Sport and Excercise Science<br />
What will I study?<br />
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is designed to equip individuals with the<br />
knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in future sport and recreation industry, or<br />
for entry to a sports related Higher National or undergraduate degree programme. It may also allow<br />
progression onto a physiotherapy or sports therapy programme. Practical ability is not a criterion for the<br />
course but it is geared for those interested in everything of a sporting nature and motivated towards<br />
furthering their own academic knowledge of the topics outlined below.<br />

Numerous visits will take place each year in order to reinforce learning. In recent academic years, these have<br />
included taking students to a range of universities in order to utilise their expertise and resources. Examples<br />
include Birmingham University, Wolverhampton University and Coventry University. Further opportunities<br />
and visits have also been provided in the form of visits to other institutions such as Lilleshall Centre for Sports<br />
Excellence and coaching form a PGA golf instructor over a period of twelve weeks. This years’ students will<br />
also visit St George’s Park the new home to the English FA and England teams and explore the opportunities<br />
that are available in sport science.<br />
How will I be assessed?<br />
All assessment is internally assessed by a teacher through a portfolio of work produced by the student for<br />
each unit that they study. The method of assessment will be varied according to the nature of the<br />
qualification being studied and will range from formal assignments, to delivering a presentation or being<br />
observed. There are NO exams.<br />
Case study<br />
Tom Smith studied Sport Science with the <strong>CTC</strong> in 2008-2010. He has since moved<br />
on to University studying to become a Physical Education teacher through PGCE<br />
placements and Extended Services opportunities. We like to provide support to our<br />
previous students and where possible the opportunity to develop their skills<br />
and knowledge.<br />
