These Hercules lip-type buffer seals
are similar to our DYR style seals
and are designed for replacement in
Caterpillar cylinders. Finite Element
Analysis (FEA) and performance
testing on the seals have resulted in
enhanced performance. The hingedlip
design reduces friction, heat, and
wear under low-pressure conditions
and acts as a check valve allowing
back-pressure relief. This pump-back
ability reduces high trapped-pressure
along with the resulting stresses on
the rod u-seal.

TECH TIP - Analyzing Seal Extrusion
SYMPTOMS:
- Extruded tail opposite pressure
- Rough/irregular edge opposite pressure
CAUSES:
- Extrusion gap too large
- Excessive side loading
- Seal material too soft
- System pressure too high
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
- Replace part/reduce clearance
- Redesign for wear ring
- Use harder seal material
- Use anti-extrusion ring
- Check system pressure
TECH TIP - Fluid Incompatibility
SYMPTOMS:
- Seal swelling/softening
- Seal hardening/loss of elasticity
CAUSES:
- Water in fl uid
- Incompatibility of fl uid and seal material
- Deterioration of fl uid
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
- Replace fl uid
- Use seal material compatible with fl uid
TECH TIP - Pressure Trap
SYMPTOMS:
- Piston seals extruded away from piston center
CAUSES:
- Rapid cycling of cylinder
- Build up of pressure between seals, higher
than system pressure
- Seal on “low pressure” side of piston seals
too effectively
- More likely to occur with use of
“loaded”u-seals
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
- Use unloaded u-seals(at least one)
- Remove energizer from one of loaded u-seals
- Redesign piston for single piston seal
