Description:<br />

Recent geographical scholarship has adopted intersectional analysis as a dominant paradigm. But the journey<br />

to intersectionality has been politically fraught and methodologically challenging. This presentations recounts<br />

some <strong>of</strong> the conversations that took place along this road.<br />

Biography: Dr. Audrey Kobayashi<br />

A native <strong>of</strong> British Columbia, Dr. Kobayashi completed a B.A. (1976) and M.A. (1978) at the University <strong>of</strong> British<br />

Columbia, and a PhD (1983) at UCLA. She taught in Geography and East Asian Studies at McGill University from<br />

1983 to 1994, when she went to Queen's University, initially as Director <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Women's Studies (1994<br />

to 1999) and thereafter as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Geography. Dr. Kobayashi has also spent time as a visiting pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> British Columbia, University College London and, most recently, Canterbury University, Christchurch,<br />

New Zealand. In 1994, she was a Fulbright Fellow at the Migration Policy Insitute in Washington, DC. Other<br />

positions include President <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Canadian</strong> <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Geographers</strong> (1999-2001), and Editor, People Place<br />

and Region, Annals <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> American <strong>Geographers</strong>. Dr. Kobayashi is currently the president <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> American <strong>Geographers</strong>.
