RECONCILIATION SJC NEWS 10 ZACH CONRAD ’14 When I was little, my mom was a Nursing student here and I would sometimes go to classes with her. My favorite part would be going to the pond to “feed the fishies,” as I would say. Thinking back on that, when I arrived on campus my junior year of high school, I felt an excitement about being in the place that my mother had been and succeeded. I then started looking at other schools as well, but didn’t have a good feeling like I did being on this campus. On subsequent visits to campus, my mom started picking up on my excitement about the programs offered here and how I could get involved. So, with that said, yes...my mother influenced my decision in choosing Saint Joseph’s College. I have immersed myself in the Core Program, and I really think I am off to a good start. When things have been tough, as I know will happen often, I have thought of my mom’s motivation and how she made it through and took care of me all at once. If she did it, then, by golly, I can! When we said goodbye on the first day of Freshman Orientation, I took her to the pond where we fed the fish together so many years earlier. I told her that I know I am going to be just fine. Because of my mom, I will succeed here. She set the bar...and I am going to raise it that much more! I am a proud Puma legacy. Spotlight JILL CONRAD ’98 Zach played a huge part in my decision to attend Saint Joseph’s as well! When Zach was a baby of only a few weeks old, I thought, “How am I going to support this precious boy?” Right then and there I knew I was going to be a nurse. I looked at several nursing programs, but was drawn to Saint Joseph’s/St. Elizabeth’s because you start patient care on day one. After my first semester at Saint Joseph’s, I was going to quit. I spent time talking with Anita Reed and she convinced me to hang on. Years later, when Zach had his interview for the Presidential Scholarship competition at Saint Joseph’s, it was Anita Reed who interviewed him. I had told him this story about Anita and his meeting with her made him even more convinced he was where he was supposed to be. During my last year while completing my BSN, Zach enjoyed coming with me to Saint Joseph’s, as we would always stop to feed the fishies. Whenever school got tough, I would remember my reason for being there. I was there because I had a precious little boy to support and care for. You can see that he influenced me in my career path and was essentially the reason for my choosing Saint Joseph’s and the Nursing program. I never knew when I was feeding fishies with my little boy that I would be feeding those fishies 13 years later while visiting him at Saint Joseph’s!
