Two Track Members Become
Kaleb Thompson ’12 (Jr., Frankfort, Ind./Frankfort) and
Alexis DeJean ’11 (Sr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) of
the Saint Joseph’s College outdoor track and field team
became All-Americans in May at the NCAA National
Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina. Thompson
and DeJean are the 17th and 18th members of the SJC
track program to achieve All-American status under head
coach Bill Massoels ’89.
Thompson, competing in his first NCAA Championships,
was seeded 12 in the shot put, but on his fourth attempt of
the day improved his mark and SJC record to 56 feet, 10.75
inches to finish eighth. The top eight finishers in each
event earn All-American accolades.
DeJean competed in two events over the course of the
championships and finished sixth in the shot put with a
mark of 47 feet, 2.5 inches. Through her first five attempts
DeJean was ranked ninth, but she unleashed the best
mark of her career on the final attempt to become an All-
American. The mark also improved DeJean’s SJC record in
the process.
Alexis Dejean ’11 placed 11th in the shot put last season at
the Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
“It is always a great experience going to the NCAA
finals,” said head coach Bill Massoels, who coached in his
36th NCAA Championships. “Alexis got a taste of things
during the indoor season, and she utilized that experience
to become an All-American this spring. To be able to
produce the best marks of the season on the biggest stage
is something Alexis and Kaleb can both take pride in.”
During the indoor season, DeJean and Melissa Buche
(Sr., Lowell, Ind./Lowell) traveled to Albuquerque, New
Mexico to compete in the Indoor Championships. DeJean,
a 2010 All-GLVC First Team selection, finished 11th in
the shot put with a mark of 45 feet, 7.5 inches. She also
finished 12th in the weight throw with a mark of 51 feet,
5.5 inches.
Buche finished fifth in the high jump to become a twotime
All-American in the event. Her mark of 5 feet, 7.25
inches was just shy of the eventual championship mark of
5 feet, 8.5 inches.
Kaleb Thompson ’12 was named an All-American last season
after placing eight in the shot put at the NCAA National Championships.
