College. You can only get so far with rankings. We must think about how we make
this value meaningful to people—for prospective students, current students, and
for parents. One of our most acute challenges is describing what happens in Core.
Given the competitive advantage that Core provides our students, it is critical that we
communicate its value. The question of how needs to be posed to everyone involved
with the institution with the understanding that we establish an ongoing dialogue.
We seek a collective response, because the expression of our academic quality lives
most meaningfully within the experiences of those who have been educated through
Core. Each individual provides a different expression of Core, and like a stained glass
window, the mosaic is what we want people to see. This is what will distinguish us
from other small, private, liberal arts colleges.
What can we expect from the Strategic Plan?
The Strategic Plan is the next step in enacting our vision for the institution. It was
reviewed by the Board of Trustees in October. We have goals that include enrollment,
retention, academics, student life, and outreach. One of the most important goals is
to increase enrollment. We also want to improve things for current students so that
they’re satisfied with their educational experience. Students are why we exist. A major
goal in the area of academics is to prepare for and gain Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation for 10 years. In
February 2012, the HLC of the North Central Association will evaluate SJC for reaffirmation of the College’s accreditation.
The HLC review will ask if we are doing what our mission says we exist to do. They will want evidence that there is an
understanding of the mission on campus and that support for the mission pervades the organization. Communication
and transparency have to be pillars of the way we do business. It is critical that we continue to communicate to
everyone associated with Saint Joseph’s College the importance of adherence to our mission and that it drives all of our
work, in and out of the classroom.
