teaching areas include direct social<br />
work practice and school social work.<br />
Dr. Kim’s research areas focus on<br />
evaluating school based interventions,<br />
solution-focused brief therapy, and<br />
asset building. He has published<br />
several manuscripts in peer reviewed<br />
journals and book chapters on the<br />
application and effectiveness <strong>of</strong><br />
solution-focused brief therapy model as<br />
well as school related <strong>issue</strong>s. Prior to<br />
his doctoral studies, Dr. Kim worked as<br />
a school counselor and case manager<br />
for community based mental health<br />
agencies in Seattle.<br />
Terry L. Koenig, Ph.D., MSW, joined the<br />
faculty at the KU <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />
<strong>Welfare</strong> in the fall <strong>of</strong> 2005. Dr. Koenig<br />
earned her graduate degrees, including<br />
her doctorate in 2001, from the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Kansas. She has<br />
extensive teaching and social work<br />
practice experience in the areas <strong>of</strong><br />
aging, health care, and ethical decisionmaking.<br />
After receiving her Ph.D., Dr.<br />
Koenig joined the faculty at the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Buffalo, where she focused<br />
her research and scholarship efforts on<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional ethical decision-making<br />
and on older adult and family decisionmaking<br />
as it relates to assisted living<br />
(AL) transitions.<br />
Dr. Koenig is a Hartford Geriatric <strong>Social</strong><br />
Work Faculty Scholar conducting research<br />
in the Buffalo, NY area on the decisions<br />
and transitions faced by older adults as<br />
they make the move into AL. Dr. Koenig<br />
was selected to participate in the Institute<br />
on Aging and <strong>Social</strong> Work sponsored by<br />
the National Institute <strong>of</strong> Health and is<br />
expanding her research interests to<br />
examine how the Long-Term Care<br />
Ombudsman Program defines, screens<br />
and develops decision-making strategies<br />
to address elder mistreatment.<br />
Woochan Shim, Ph.D., MSW, joined the<br />
faculty at the KU <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />
<strong>Welfare</strong> as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the<br />
fall <strong>of</strong> 2005. She earned her MSW<br />
degree from Columbia and her Ph.D.<br />
from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Illinois, Urbana-<br />
Champaign. Previously, as a social<br />
worker, she worked at a domestic<br />
violence shelter in Korea and at a<br />
Korean domestic violence counseling<br />

center in New York. After completing her<br />
doctorate, Dr. Shim joined the faculty at<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin-Oshkosh for<br />
one year before coming to KU. Her<br />
teaching areas include social work with<br />
diverse populations, fundamentals <strong>of</strong><br />
social work practice, and intimate<br />
partner violence. Dr. Shim’s areas <strong>of</strong><br />
special interest are intersections<br />
between intimate partner violence and<br />
other types <strong>of</strong> family violence, such as<br />
child maltreatment and elder abuse.<br />
Currently, she is working on the effects<br />
<strong>of</strong> spirituality and religiosity in coping<br />
with the effects <strong>of</strong> intimate partner<br />
violence, especially among older<br />
populations. She is also interested in<br />
studying healthy marriage formation<br />
and maintenance among couples with<br />
mental disorders and the adjustment<br />
process <strong>of</strong> Korean multinational singleparent<br />
households, so called “girogi”<br />
families.<br />
Ariana E. Wall, PhD., MSW, joined the<br />
faculty at the KU <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />
<strong>Welfare</strong> as an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the<br />
fall <strong>of</strong> 2005. Dr. Wall received her Ph.D.<br />
form the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Carolina at<br />
Chapel Hill in May 2005 and was a<br />
National Institute <strong>of</strong> Justice Graduate<br />
Research Fellow. Her teaching areas<br />
include research methods and<br />
statistics and child/youth problem<br />
behaviors. Her research areas include<br />
adolescent problem behavior, child<br />
maltreatment, risk and protective<br />
factors, and gender differences. Prior to<br />
her doctoral studies, Dr. Wall was the<br />
assistant director <strong>of</strong> the Louisiana State<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Work, Office<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Service Research and<br />
Development. Dr. Wall is a member <strong>of</strong><br />
the National Survey <strong>of</strong> Child and<br />
Adolescent Well-being (NSCAW)<br />
Research Group. She has co-authored<br />
two recent articles on the NSCAW<br />
baseline data, has several articles in<br />
preparation or under review from her<br />
dissertation work with the 18-month<br />
NSCAW data. Dr. Wall has experience<br />
with longitudinal data analysis and<br />
interpretation, complex sampling<br />
designs, weighting, grant writing,<br />
project management, and program<br />
evaluation.<br />
