Margo Award Recipients, 2005-2006<br />

The MARGO Awards, named in honor <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Emeritus, Margaret Schutz Gordon, who served as Director <strong>of</strong> Field Education<br />

from 1970-1983. The MARGO Awards recognize outstanding achievement in field education by students and field instructors.<br />

Outstanding Field Instructors:<br />

Laura Breitberg immigrated from to the<br />

US from Russia in 1991 and graduated<br />

with her MSW degree from KU in 1998.<br />

She has been working as a<br />

resettlement coordinator and elder case<br />

manager at Jewish Family and Children<br />

Services overseeing the ElderCare<br />

program. She is always enthusiastic<br />

about doing field instruction and works<br />

to give her students a very solid and<br />

well-rounded experience.<br />

Janet Krueger, LCSW, LSCSW, got her<br />

BA from Valparaiso <strong>University</strong> in<br />

Psychology and Theology and her MSW<br />

from KU in 1971. She trained under the<br />

Menninger Foundation between 1979-<br />

1981. She spent a decade as a<br />

Psychiatric <strong>Social</strong> Worker at KU Med<br />

Center and later became a Therapy<br />

Supervisor and Clinical Director at<br />

Marillac Center for Children in the<br />

1980’s. Since 1997 she has been<br />

Clinical Director at Crittenton Behavioral<br />

Health responsible for the Residential<br />

Program and providing oversight <strong>of</strong><br />

many <strong>of</strong> the other programs at Crittenton<br />

(Community Based Services, Addictions<br />

Program, Spiritual Wellness, Student<br />

internships program etc.). Janet has<br />

taught for the KU <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong><br />

<strong>Welfare</strong> and has been a die-hard in the<br />

field instruction realm. Janet welcomes<br />

MSW students every year at Crittenton<br />

and pours her heart and soul into the<br />

coordination and instruction <strong>of</strong> students<br />

at the center. She has been supervising<br />

SW Administration and Advocacy<br />

students for the past couple <strong>of</strong> years;<br />

and student Reshida Rone nominated<br />

her this year for Outstanding Field<br />

Instructor.<br />

Outstanding Students:<br />

Amitta Davis, BSW Senior, was<br />

valedictorian <strong>of</strong> her high school in<br />

Bonner Springs, KS. She volunteered<br />

as an advocate for survivors <strong>of</strong> domestic<br />

violence through WTCS in Lawrence.<br />

She minored in Latin American Studies<br />

while working on her BSW and is<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>icient in the Spanish Language.<br />

She is dedicated to children and<br />

families and completed a practicum<br />

through the Topeka <strong>School</strong>s providing<br />

support and counseling to Latino<br />

students and their families. She is<br />

currently pursuing an MSW degree at<br />

the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Texas in Austin.<br />

Sue Cliff, Clinical MSW student,<br />

received an AA degree from Haskell<br />

Indian Nations <strong>University</strong> in 1990 and<br />

later went on to get a BSW degree from<br />

KU in 1992. She worked for the<br />

Junction City SRS <strong>of</strong>fice for two years<br />

and also served as a maternal and<br />

infant care worker briefly for the Junction<br />

City Health Department. She later went<br />

to Madison Wisconsin where she<br />

worked in correctional services and at<br />

an elementary school. She worked<br />

concurrently on her certification in<br />

Addictions Counseling through KCKCC<br />

while working on her MSW degree. She<br />

is a Native American Scholar and<br />

intends to work with the Native<br />

Community upon graduation. She<br />

completed a foundation level practicum<br />

through DCCCA Outpatient Services in<br />

Lawrence. She completed her<br />

advanced level practicum with the<br />

Topeka <strong>School</strong>s for which she was<br />

nominated for Outstanding Clinical<br />

Student.<br />

Carla Wozniak, SWAAP student,<br />

received her BSW degree from KU in<br />

2003. She was an Employment<br />

Specialist and Case Manager for<br />

Kansas Legal Services for 2 1/2 years,<br />

and also did her undergraduate<br />

practicum with KLS. Carla had been a<br />

lead teaching assistant at Brookcreek<br />

Learning Center in Lawrence and also<br />

served as Site Director for the Medallion<br />

<strong>School</strong> Partnership program. She is<br />

rich with volunteer experiences<br />

including WTCS (domestic violence),<br />

Jubilee Cafe (homeless), and Topeka<br />

Womenade which she co-founded at<br />

KLS to help clients in immediate<br />

financial crisis. She completed her<br />

administration concentration practicum<br />

through the Van Go Mobile Arts program<br />

and was nominated for Outstanding<br />

Administration and Advocacy student.<br />

Emily Meissen, Foundation MSW,<br />

received her BS degree from Kansas<br />

State <strong>University</strong> in Journalism and Mass<br />

Communication with a minor in<br />

Leadership Studies. She was active as<br />

a student intern with American<br />

Humanics which enhanced her interest<br />

and experience with non-pr<strong>of</strong>it and<br />

human services agencies. In fact, she<br />

was the founding member and student<br />

representative <strong>of</strong> the American<br />

Humanics Student Association in<br />

Manhattan. She spent three summers<br />

as a psychosocial group leader for<br />

children with SED through the Mental<br />

Health Association <strong>of</strong> Central KS in<br />

Wichita. She was a public relations<br />

intern for the Wichita CASA program and<br />

has also taught leadership classes.<br />

She completed her Foundation level<br />

practicum with ECKAN <strong>of</strong> Douglas<br />

County serving low-income families and<br />

coordinating food drive efforts. She is<br />

preparing for an advanced level SWAAP<br />

practicum with the Department <strong>of</strong> Health<br />

and Human Service’s Office <strong>of</strong><br />

Evaluation and Inspection.
