2006 MSW
Hooding & Doctoral
Recognition Speech
Professor Emeritus, Dennis Saleebey,
gave the address at the 2006 MSW
Hooding & Doctoral Recognition
Ceremony. It was an inspiring speech.
We have received several requests for
copies of the text. Here are the closing
words.
“Let me end with an acknowledgement
of pride, social work pride. We should
be proud of our past. We should be
proud of our commitment to social
justice. We should be proud of our work
with those who labor and live under the
burden of oppression. We should be
proud of our civic and moral intelligence
and imagination. We should be proud of
the great variety and diversity of people
with whom we work and the incredible
heterogeneity of places where we do our
work. Most of all, we should be proud of
all the people who live a better life and
see a brighter day because a social
worker came into their lives and worked
a little magic. Maxim Gorky, the Russian
writer, who lead a troubled and difficult
life, said this about his grandmother:
Until she came into my life, I
seem to have been asleep and
hidden among obscurity; but
when she appeared she woke
me and led me to the light of
day. Connecting all by a single
thread, she wove them into a
pattern of many colors, thus
making herself my friend for
life, the being nearest my heart,
and she built up the strength
needful for a hard life.
We do no less. To help others build up
the strength needful for a hard life could
not be more noble, difficult, or gratifying
work. We should take great pride in the
doing of it.”
