What did the school want to<br />
achieve?<br />
Ingleby Barwick, <strong>in</strong> the leafy, suburban<br />
outskirts of Stockton, is said to be<br />
Europe’s largest private hous<strong>in</strong>g estate.<br />
As act<strong>in</strong>g Deputy Headteacher Liz<br />
Shaller expla<strong>in</strong>s, it would be easy for a<br />
school <strong>in</strong> such an environment to<br />
become cut off from the wider world.<br />
‘<strong>The</strong> nature of the area that we live <strong>in</strong><br />
could encourage an <strong>in</strong>sular world view,’<br />
she says. ‘With few ethnic m<strong>in</strong>ority<br />
families here, we aim to broaden pupils’<br />
horizons and encourage them to<br />
experience other people’s perspectives.’<br />
<strong>The</strong> school wanted l<strong>in</strong>ks with the local<br />
and the <strong>global</strong> community to be an<br />
important part of its mission and<br />
ethos, and staff decided to <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>global</strong> issues as part<br />
of everyday teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
How did the school organise<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g to meet its aims?<br />
In 2001, as part of L<strong>in</strong>k Community<br />
<strong>Development</strong>’s (LCD) Global Teacher<br />
Programme, Liz went on a teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
exchange to Ayuusi-Y<strong>in</strong>e Primary<br />
School <strong>in</strong> a remote part of northern<br />
Ghana. After her return, a staff<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g group planned the<br />
curriculum us<strong>in</strong>g the Oxfam guide<br />
<strong>Education</strong> for <strong>global</strong> citizenship as a<br />
template. Each year group now has a<br />
written scheme of work that builds<br />
and extends the children’s knowledge<br />
and understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>global</strong> issues,<br />
and makes them reflect on their skills,<br />
values and attitudes.<br />
