<strong>The</strong> purpose of this guide<br />

This guide will help you as teachers<br />

reflect on the <strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

your curriculum. It provides a clear<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ition of the <strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong><br />

and suggests ways <strong>in</strong> which this<br />

<strong>dimension</strong> can be built <strong>in</strong>to your<br />

curriculum.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are some practical activities to<br />

help you stimulate a conversation<br />

about the <strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong> <strong>in</strong> your<br />

school and decide on ways forward.<br />

<strong>The</strong> activities focus on three key<br />

questions.<br />

What are you try<strong>in</strong>g<br />

1 to achieve?<br />

How will you organise<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

2 How well are you<br />

achiev<strong>in</strong>g your aims?<br />

Case studies show how different<br />

schools have answered these three<br />

questions. <strong>The</strong>y also offer examples<br />

of the <strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>action</strong>,<br />

and should help you make<br />

decisions about how you would<br />

like to develop it <strong>in</strong> your school.<br />

This guide ends with a brief<br />

overview of the organisations and<br />

agencies that can support your<br />

<strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong> work.<br />

This guide should be used <strong>in</strong> conjunction<br />

with the follow<strong>in</strong>g publications:<br />

Develop<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

the school curriculum shows how the<br />

<strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong> can be <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to both the curriculum and the wider<br />

life of schools. It provides a clear<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ition of ‘<strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong>’, which<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporates the concepts of <strong>global</strong><br />

citizenship, conflict resolution, diversity,<br />

human rights, <strong>in</strong>terdependence, social<br />

justice, susta<strong>in</strong>able development and<br />

values and perceptions. It puts the<br />

curriculum with<strong>in</strong> a broader, <strong>global</strong><br />

context, show<strong>in</strong>g how all subjects can<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporate the <strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong>.<br />

Putt<strong>in</strong>g the world <strong>in</strong>to world-class<br />

education provides an <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

strategy for education, skills and<br />

children’s services. It identifies three<br />

<strong>in</strong>terrelated key goals for a worldclass<br />

education, which can be<br />

summarised as:<br />

� equipp<strong>in</strong>g children and adults for<br />

a <strong>global</strong> society and economy<br />

� work<strong>in</strong>g with other nations and<br />

regions for their benefit and ours<br />

� ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an education system<br />

that can further our <strong>global</strong><br />

economic objectives.<br />
