about the <strong>global</strong> <strong>dimension</strong>?<br />
<strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g extracts are taken from the latest Ofsted<br />
reports for some of the schools that have provided case<br />
studies later on <strong>in</strong> this guide. <strong>The</strong>y show the impact<br />
develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>global</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g opportunities has had on the<br />
learners <strong>in</strong> these schools.<br />
Ingleby Mill Primary School, May 2004: Pupils’ writ<strong>in</strong>g is given<br />
a very high profile throughout the school, featur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> most<br />
displays. Real purposes are often found for writ<strong>in</strong>g… the letters<br />
year 6 wrote to the chancellor, as part of a <strong>global</strong> campaign for<br />
education for all, showed a sophisticated use of language.<br />
Shaw Wood Primary School, October 2006: First class<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational l<strong>in</strong>ks with European schools provide pupils with<br />
excellent opportunities to broaden their experiences. <strong>The</strong><br />
teach<strong>in</strong>g of Spanish and Japanese to all pupils adds even greater<br />
depth to this outstand<strong>in</strong>g curriculum.<br />
Wyche Primary School, March 2007: Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural<br />
development is outstand<strong>in</strong>g… <strong>The</strong>med days, for example, the 'Food and Fair Trade<br />
Day', occur regularly and engage the pupils’ <strong>in</strong>terests to give them a greater<br />
understand<strong>in</strong>g of national differences and how the way we live impacts on<br />
other cultures.<br />
Langdon School, May 2006: <strong>The</strong> opportunities offered to students are exceptional.<br />
Inspectors spoke to students who had represented the London Olympic bid <strong>in</strong><br />
S<strong>in</strong>gapore, who had travelled to Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh and addressed 250,000 people at the<br />
Make Poverty History rally on behalf of the <strong>global</strong> campaign for education, and<br />
students who had accompanied the chancellor of the exchequer to Mozambique.<br />
Hagley Primary School, May 2007: Parents praised the strong l<strong>in</strong>ks the school<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s with schools <strong>in</strong> <strong>The</strong> Gambia and Ch<strong>in</strong>a. <strong>The</strong>se pervade the school's day-today<br />
life, and give pupils a real <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to life <strong>in</strong> other countries through their<br />
correspondence and the books they make about the differences <strong>in</strong> the life of children<br />
here and abroad… L<strong>in</strong>ks with <strong>The</strong> Gambia <strong>in</strong>clude reciprocal visits by staff here and<br />
from the partner school. <strong>The</strong>se give pupils an exceptionally good understand<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
life <strong>in</strong> other parts of the world.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Rid<strong>in</strong>gs High School, November 2006: <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational flavour of the school is<br />
demonstrated by the high proportion of pupils who study a modern foreign language<br />
to GCSE level… <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational l<strong>in</strong>ks are appreciated by the pupils, as are the very<br />
good facilities for <strong>in</strong>formation and communication technology. <strong>The</strong>se came together<br />
when the school represented Europe <strong>in</strong> a United Nations video l<strong>in</strong>k with schools<br />
around the world.<br />
