TOP 20 POLL
For the 2012 season, the NJCAA will release eight
Division I baseball rankings on a bi-weekly basis at
the beginning of the season and then weekly the
last three weeks of the season based on the
following schedule: Feb. 29, March 14, March 28,
April 11, April 25, May 9, May 16 and May 23. The
final poll date is determined by the start of the DI
World Series.
Each NJCAA Region Director with Division I baseball
will report the top teams in their respective region
to NJCAA Headquarters each Monday, which is then
compiled into a weekly region report. This report is
then sent out to the NJCAA Division I voting panel,
which consists of the 10 District Directors. Each
District Director then compiles a Top 20 based on
this report. (Rank order submitted by each region is
honored.) In order to be eligible for ranking, a team
first must have their schedule/results and stats up
to date on the NJCAA website. They must also then
be submitted by their region director to the national
office for poll consideration.
NJCAA Headquarters will compile all votes and
release the rankings to the public on each poll date
online at www.njcaa.org.
Former-St. Louis CC Player David Freese
Wins World Series MVP
St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman David Freese was largely an unknown
player entering the 2011 season. Little did the Cardinal fan base know that in
October he would be raising the World Series MVP trophy. Following his
heroics in the Fall Classic, Freese quickly became a household name that will
be remembered in baseball lore for decades to come.
Freese’s journey to the top of the baseball world began at St. Louis Community
College - Meramec (Mo.). After suffering from a broken wrist during his
freshman season, Freese had his coming-out party in 2004. With drastic
improvements to his swing, Freese earned himself first-team spots on the
All-Region, All-District and All-American teams. Following his commendable
season at Meramec, Freese went on to finish his collegiate career at South
Alabama where he was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.
Once Freese advanced to professional baseball, his stock began to rise as a
up-and-coming prospect. The Cardinals thought so much of his abilities that
they traded star outfielder Jim Edmonds for him prior to the 2009 season.
Unfortunately, Freese suffered injury after injury and didn’t meet his high
expectations until the 2011 season.
During the playoffs, Freese boasted a .397 batting average and tied playoff
records with 21 RBI’s, 50 total bases and 25 hits. Freese showcased his flare
for the dramatic in Game 6 of the World Series.
With the Rangers one strike away from becoming champions, Freese hit a
two-run triple to tie the game and force extra innings. In the bottom of the
10th, Freese forced Game 7 with a walk-off home run. The game has largely
been acclaimed as one of the greatest in the history of the World Series.
Freese went on to bat in two runs in Game 7, as the Cardinals claimed their
11th World Series title in club history.
