now does not allow the use of dispensing envelopes to be part of the approved
label suite of a registered veterinary product. However veterinarians are permitted
to use them if supplied by a manufacturer. In this case, the dispensing envelope is
considered to be ‘marketing material’.
20 Waste disposal
The disposal of unwanted or expired pharmaceutical drugs and veterinary
biologicals is an emerging environmental issue. All medications applied externally,
injected or ingested (and their bioactive transformation products) have the potential
to be excreted or washed into the sewage system and from there discharged into
the aquatic or terrestrial environments. Veterinarians should make every effort to
ensure these products are properly disposed of.
ChemClear
ChemClear ® is the national chemical waste disposal program for the safe
management of unwanted rural chemicals. Chemicals are classified by
ChemClear into two groups:
� Group 1 chemicals to be accepted free of charge are:
- sold only by member companies of Avcare (the National Association for Crop
Production and Animal Health) or VMDA (Veterinary Manufacturers and
Distributors Association) or participating non-members;
- registered agricultural and veterinary products, or products whose registration
has ceased since the last ChemClear collection;
- in the original non-returnable rigid metal, plastic or cardboard container;
- identifiably labelled with the original manufacturer’s label or other permanent
identification;
- not collectable under any other return program;
- not part of any special mandatory or voluntary phase out; and
- not part of any recall where the deadline has expired.
� Group 2 chemicals for which fees are payable are:
- agricultural and veterinary chemicals whose registration expired more than
two years ago;
- farm chemical products of non-Avcare or non-VMDA member companies that
are either currently registered or whose registration or permit ceased since the
last collection.
Under this program, 200mL or more of any rural chemical will be accepted.
