 Clariant introduces Emulsogen ® EB
Clariant introduces Emulsogen ® EB, an emulsifier and corrosion inhibitor package for the formulation
of mineral oil free semi-synthetic or milky cutting fluids for steel and aluminum.
The variance in the composition and quality of mineral oils as well as the sometimes difficult availability has
given many headaches to formulators of semi-synthetic metalworking fluids, who often have to adjust recipes to
overcome these variances. In addition regional mineral oil variances often limit the broad use of packages for
water miscible concentrates. Besides technical problems the high price volatility of mineral oils is a further
issue.
Emulsogen ® EB solves these problems by allowing the replacement of mineral oil in concentrates for steel
working fluids simply with water. It avoids the use of coupling agents and other components that increase the
complexity of formulations without contributing to lubricity or corrosion protection. By exchanging water with
synthetic esters or, when a co-emulsifier is used, even with vegetable oils and the addition of aluminum staining
inhibitor Hostaphat ® OPS, Emulsogen ® EB can also be used to formulate fluids for aluminum working.
Metal working fluids formulated with Emulsogen EB ® show very good corrosion protection on steel, excellent
lubricity and low leaching of yellow metals and cobalt without the additional use of yellow metal inhibitors.
Besides the environmental benefit of avoiding mineral oil all components have a biodegradation of > 60% in
OECD tests and have low effects on the aquatic environment (German water hazard class: 1).
Emulsogen EB is easy to handle, liquid at temperatures even below 0°C and can be stored at 0°C to 40°C over
extended time. It can be easily diluted with water and spontaneously forms emulsions. Defoamers, e.g. D-
Foam ® R M 762 (0,05-0,1%) and Biocides, e.g. Nipacide ® BK or Nipacide ® MBM (2-3%) should be added
directly to the Emulsogen EB before dilution with water to form the concentrate.
Emulsogen EB ® is registered in major chemical inventories, e.g. EU, TSCA, China, Korea, Australia.
Emulsogen EB Water-based
fluid for steel
Emulsogen EB is a clear liquid with a viscosity of
approx. 2.400 mPas at room temperature and
pourable down to – 25°C.
Both the emulsions are micro-emulsions which a
narrow particle size distribution. The water-based
system shows an transparent appearance
whereas the TMP-Oleate based system is more
opalescent due to a larger particle size.
Fluids formulated with Emulsogen EB ® give excellent lubricity on steel
and aluminium
Emulsogen ® EB does not contain chlorine-, phosphorous-, or sulfur based lubricity
additves, but nevertheless it’s emulsions shows excellent lubricity on steel. When
formulated with esters, e.g. TMP-Oleate, the emulsions also give outstanding
lubricity on aluminum.
 Formulation for aluminum cutting
Formulations with esters show aluminium staining
but by the use of small amounts of Hostaphat ®
OPS in the concentrate this effect can be
inhibited, even when these contain high amounts
of copper.
