0-11 in seven innings and 0-12 in
three innings. They then traveled
to Ruthven on Friday to take on
Ruthven-Ayshire where they also
dropped two one-run games 3-4 and
11-12.
In Monday’s game, Alannah Carroll
pitched 4 2/3 innings against
West Bend-Mallard in the first game,
giving up six hits and nine runs
(three earned) with five walks and
six strikeouts. Maggie Ludwig relieved
Alannah to finish out the 2 1/3
innings where she gave up five hits,
two runs and recorded three K’s.
The Panthers connected for five
singles. Alesha Carroll led the team
with two, while Alannah, Ludwig
and Haley Grein all had one.
Extreme weather impacts soybeans
ANKENY - Though it’s relatively
early in the growing season, Iowa
soybean farmers have already experienced
a wide range of extreme
weather conditions.
David Wright, Iowa Soybean Association’s
(ISA’s) director of contract
research, says, “In central
Iowa, farmers have had too much
moisture. We’ve also experienced
multiple weeks of cool soil and air
temperatures, followed by unusually
hot, windy conditions. All of these
weather factors have an impact on
soybean development.”
The extended forecast for Iowa
continues to be for above normal
precipitation and above normal high
temperatures, a combination that
can put additional stress on soybean
plants.
In areas of soggy soils, Wright
says, soybean root development is
slowed by lower levels of oxygen
and higher levels of carbon dioxide.
“This slower root development
could reduce the number of root tips,
which is a primary factor in a plant’s
ability to uptake essential elements,”
Wright explains. “Water and nutrients
are taken up just behind the root
tip so the more root hairs a plant has,
the greater its ability to compensate
for heat and reduced soil moisture.”
If conditions aren’t too extreme,
Wright says, it is actually preferable
to have somewhat dry conditions
during vegetative growth stages.
“Where it is drier, soybeans will develop
a more complete root system
which will enable the plant to take
up more water and nutrients during
its reproductive phase,” Wright says.
Research conducted in the 1980s
concluded that young soybean plants
are fairly resilient to stress during
vegetative stages of development.
The greatest yield loss comes when
stress occurs between R3 (beginning
podset) and R5.5 (seedfill nearly
complete) growth stages.
While there’s little a farmer can do
midseason to compensate for weather’s
effects, Wright notes that understanding
what goes on underground
can help with future management
considerations.
One of the most obvious is to note
wet areas that may need tiling. Less
obvious would be the need for fungicide
and insecticide seed treatments.
In addition, farmers might consider
making the transition to narrow
rows and/or no-till practices. Iowa
State University has documented a
4.5 bushel advantage for soybeans
grown in narrow rows compared to
30 inch rows. Narrow rows develop
an earlier canopy, which can help
keep the vegetative tissue cool during
periods of high heat.
No-till practices can also improve
drainage by building soil structure
so water doesn’t stand on compacted
ground. No-till reduces fuel, labor
and equipment costs, while improving
soil and water quality.
Wright says, “Using management
practices that can help a crop withstand
Iowa’s increasingly extreme
weather conditions can result in a
more resilient soybean production
system. It’s not too early to be thinking
of management considerations
for future crops.”
Children and Sports: Fun or Stress?
By: Malisa Radar, ISU Extension
Family Life Specialist
Baseball, softball, soccer, tennis,
swimming and golf are just some of
the organized sports children may be
involved in this summer. The hours
spent may be a time of fun or a time of
stress, said Malisa Rader, Iowa State
University Extension family life program
specialist.
“This largely depends upon how
you, the parent, approach your child’s
participation. Remember, you are a
role model and your actions and attitudes
will impact your child’s actions
and attitudes,” Rader said.
“Begin by understanding where
your child is developmentally,” the
ISU Extension specialist recommended.
During the middle childhood years
(ages 8-12), children’s physical development
varies greatly. Children this
age have a need to belong, are eager
for recognition and approval and want
to have fun.
“We’re seeing a trend toward children
dropping out of unhealthy competitive
activities at this age,” Rader
said.
Studies of stress in young athletes
suggest those who are constantly
pushed by parents and coaches run
the risk of developing sports burnout.
This is a total loss of interest in sports
caused by anxiety and stress associated
with competition.
“You can help your child develop
a healthy life-long interest in sports
by eliminating the pressure to excel,”
Rader said.
Rader offers these suggestions to
help make sports enjoyable for the entire
family.
· Take a positive approach; praise
children for the positive aspects of
their performance.
· Focus on the child’s developing
skills and not the final score.
· Match a child’s temperament to the
right sport. Be realistic about a child’s
physical abilities.
· Use sports as a way to teach children
about limits and strengths, goal
setting and the importance of sports as
a means of relaxation.
· Provide a variety of sports. There is
time for specialization when the child
is a teen.
· Allow the child to determine the
importance of sports in his or her life.
Parents should not use their children
to relive their own athletic past or to
fulfill unmet athletic goals.
· Control emotions and actions at
sporting events. Support and respect
the coaches and all the children playing.
• Be a positive role model. Enjoy
sports.
Cardinals Fall in NIC Softball Standings
After picking up their first North
Iowa Conference victory recently,
the Garner-Hayfield softball team
was hoping to add some games to the
win column in league play this week.
The Cards have shown improvement
in recent outings, but were unable to
pick up any wins through the week’s
action.
One bad inning cost the Cardinals in
Monday’s game with West Hancock.
After taking a 1 – 0 lead in the second
inning, G-H saw disaster strike as the
Eagles erupted for 11 runs in the top
of the third. That proved to be too
much to overcome as West Hancock
went on to win 16 – 3.
Megan Waddingham had two
RBI’s and two hits to lead Garner
offensively. Bri Bier added a pair of
singles for the Cards while Jasmine
Doble, Karah Huinker, Alicia Savoy,
Kristin Stromer and Mallory Van
Oort all singled.
Kelly Babcock started the game on
the mound for Garner, giving up nine
hits and three walks. Doble relieved
Babcock in the third inning and
allowed nine hits with a walk.
Garner-Hayfield’s only nonconference
game of the week was
Tuesday’s road trip to Clear Lake.
That game proved to be a well-played
match up with the Lions finishing on
top of a 5 – 2 decision.
Mallory Van Oort and Kristin
Stromer each singled twice to lead
the Garner offense while Megan
Waddingham had two RBI’s with a
base hit. Jasmine Doble, Bri Bier and
Liz Tusha all singled for Garner in
that game.
Doble gave upt 10 hits and a
walk with three K’s while going the
distance in this game.
Garner-Hayfield lost a close
decision to Newman in their first
meeting of the season so the Cards
were hoping to pull off an upset over
the Knights this time around. Garner
played a strong defensive game,
holding Newman to only four runs
but the Cardinal bats were unable to
produce any runs in the losing effort.
G-H finished the game with a total
of only four hits as Mallory Van Oort
and Karah Huinker each singled
twice in the game. Jasmine Doble
allowed nine hits and a walk with four
strikeouts while going the distance on
the Cardinal mound.
The Cardinals fell short again
on Friday as Lake Mills posted a
5 – 3 decision over G-H. A pair of
Cardinal runs in the second gave
Garner a short-lived 2 – 1 lead. Lake
Mills tied the score at 2 – 2 in the
fourth inning but Garner answered
with a run in the fifth to retake the
lead. Lake Millscored twice in the
sixth to go ahead 4 – 3 and then added
an insurance run in the seventh on the
way to the win.
Taylor Nelson had two RBI’s and
a base hit to lead Garner at the plate.
Kristin Stromer added two singles to
the offense while Mallory Van Oort,
Jasmine Doble, Karah Huinker and
Bri Bier all singled.
Doble gave up seven hits and
fanned eight Bulldog batters in her
pitching performance for the Cards.
G-H played a non-conference
nightcap against the Bulldogs on
Friday. In that game Lake Mills was
able to pull out a 5 – 1 victory over
the Cards.
G-H managed only three hits in this
game with Maddie Tusha, Megan
Waddingham and Kristin Stromer
all picking up singles. Brittany Hall
threw this game for the Cardinals,
giving up seven hits with two
strikeouts.
The Cardinals are now 1 – 9 in North
Iowa Conference play and hosted
the Garner-Hayfield Tournament on
Saturday. Details from those games
appear in a separate story in the
West Hancock Softball
team improves
conference record
The Eagle softball team picked up two more conference victories this
past week over Garner-Hayfield 16-3 and Belmond-Klemme 14-1.
The team traveled to Garner last Monday to take on the Cards where
they brought home the victory in six innings. The Eagles went scoreless
through the first two innings before pounding 11 runs in the third to
give them a commanding lead over the Cardinals 11-3. The Cards went
scoreless through the rest of the game while the Eagles added one run in
the fifth and four more in the sixth to make the spread more than ten runs
and end the game in six.
The Eagles racked up 18 hits on the night, 9 of them coming from their
explosive 11 run third inning. “It is very tough for any team to come
back after that,” said Coach Mallen.
Defensively the Eagles played solid with only one error. Pitcher Anna
Mallen walked two batters on the night and allowed eight hits.
Taylor Formanek and Anna led the team with four hits. Brooke
Heusinkveld was right behind them with three while Abby Paca and
April Burgardt both added two.
Heusinkveld batted in four runs for the Eagles while Anna added three.
Paca also had two RBI’s while Sarah Mallen, Burgradt and Colbie Bates
all brought in one.
The Eagle’s Wednesday game against Forest City was rained out and
has been rescheduled to this Thursday in Britt.
On Friday the team traveled to Belmond to take on the Broncos in a
quick five-inning 14-1 NIC victory. The game belonged to the Eagles as
they scored three in the first, five in the third and three in both the fourth
the fifth. The Bronco’s lone run was earned in the first.
The Eagles scored 14 on just seven hits. “It was a tough game to get
any consistency at bat,” said Mallen, “But a good win for us none the
less.”
The three-day break didn’t do the Eagles any favors with their timing
at the bat according to Mallen. They capitalized on some Bronco miscues
with aggressive base running to bring in the runs.
Anna Mallen continues to be the woman of the mound allowing just
three hits, one passed batter and one strikeout.
Formanek batted in two runs and had three hits. Sarah, Kellie Schmit,
Paca and Jessica Gray all earned one hit for the Eagles. Schmit and Paca
also brought in one RBI a piece.
The Eagles finished out their week in their last season tournament at
the Hampton Invitational. The Eagles were downed by AGSWAR in the
first game 6-16 and then by West Fork 4-20.
“We played terrible in this tournament and the other teams played their
best game at the plate,” said Mallen. “With that combination the score
can get ugly and it did.”
A positive outcome of the tough and ugly games were the practice and
experience the outfield gained. “Our outfield got more work than they
have all season,” commented Mallen.
Sarah Mallen shined in the grass as she ran down and made the catch
on three potential doubles or triples. Formanek remained strong at the
plate for the eagles as she went four for four between the two games.
“We need to play well next week as we play the top teams in the conference,”
said Mallen. The Eagles are now 5-3 in the conference and
according to Mallen, “if we play well and find wins this week we would
place ourselves in a very good position in the NIC.”
The Eagles will finish up their regular season with games Monday
against North Iowa in Buffalo Center, Wednesday against Newman in
Britt, Thursday with Forest City also in Britt, and a double header Friday
at Lake Mills. Their final regular season game will be next Tuesday at
home against Osage.
Cardinals Play Well at G-H Softball Tourney
Garner-Hayfield picked up a win
while suffering two narrow losses to
rated teams at the Garner-Hayfield
Classic Tournament on Saturday. The
Cards opened the day with a win over
Clarion-Goldfield before dropping
close decisions to eighth-ranked (2A)
Emmetsburg and 15th-rated (1A)
Woden-Crystal Lake/Titonka.
The Cardinals scored early and
often in their opener against Clarion-
Goldfield. G-H plated two runs in the
first inning followed by three more in
the second and four runs in the third.
That would prove to be enough as
Garner cruised to a 9 – 1 win over the
Cowboys.
Jasmine Doble collected three RBI’s
with a base hit to lead Garner at the
plate followed by Taylor Nelson with
two RBI’s on a single. Also picking
up base hits in the game were Maddie
Tusha, Karah Huinker, Megan
Waddingham and Kristin Stromer.
Doble fanned seven batters while
scattering nine hits on her way to the
pitching win for the Cardinals.
Before the season officially opened,
Garner-Hayfield saw Emmetsburg
in a scrimmage several weeks ago.
In that meeting, the Cardinals failed
to score against the E’Hawks. Since
that time G-H has shown marked
improvement as Emmetsburg posted
a narrow win over the Cards. After
two scoreless innings the E’Hawks
erupted for nine runs in the third
inning to seemingly take control of
the game. Garner responded with
five runs in their half of the third
and added two more in the fourth to
keep the game close. The E’Hawks
added a run in the fifth to conclude
the scoring in the game.
Megan Waddingham had a big game
at the plate for the Cards, picking up
three RBI’s on a pair of hits. Karah
Huinker added two RBI’s on two
singles followed by Maddie Tusha
and Jasmine Doble with two hits
apiece. Jori Meints added a pinch-hit
single to the Cardinal offense.
Brittany Hall went the distance on
the mound for Garner, surrendering
10 hits and three walks with three
strikeouts.
In spite of dropping their last game
of the day, the Cardinals had to feel
good about their 5 – 3 loss to WCLT.
The Cardinals scored first in the game,
picking up a run in the fourth inning.
The Tigers scored twice in the fifth to
take the lead but Garner knotted the
score at 2 – 2 with a run in their half
of the fifth. The score remained tied
through seven innings and the Tigers
plated three runs in the eight to gain
the upper hand. G-H scored a run in
the bottom of the eighth but the rally
fell short.
Garner was held to four hits in
the game as Maddie Tusha, Kristin
Stromer, Taylor Nelson and Alicia
Savoy all singled. Jasmine Doble
went the distance on the mound for
Garner, scattering eight hits an a walk
with five strikeouts.
The Cardinals are now 7 – 21
overall. They will begin their final
week of regular season action this
week at Osage on Monday, followed
by Tuesday’s non-conference game
at Algona Garrigan. G-H will then
complete NIC play with games
at Forest City and North Iowa on
Wednesday and Thursday before
hosting Belmond on Friday.
Cardinals Drop NIC Baseball Games
A lighter schedule combined with
a rain out gave the Garner-Hayfield
baseball team some much needed
rest for their pitching staff. The
Cardinals faced West Hancock and
Lake Mills at home on Monday and
Friday and traveled to Mason City
to face Newman on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s double-header against
Bishop Garrigan was cancelled due
to soggy field conditions.
The youthful Cards were hoping
to improve their North Iowa
Conference record against the Eagles
on Monday. The two teams played
even through the first four innings,
with each squad scoring once in the
second, twice in the third and three
times in the fourth. West Hancock
gained the advantage with two runs
in the fifth and another in the sixth
while holding Garner scoreless. The
Eagles added an insurance run in the
seventh and a Cardinal rally attempt
fell short making the final score 10 –
7.
The Cardinal bats had great
success against the Eagles but
stranded 11 base runners through the
course of the game. Zach Buseman
led G-H at the plate with two RBI’s
on two hits. Joe Ermer and Josh
Theobald each added two hits with
an RBI while Blake Risius also
singled twice. Nick Roberts, Lance
Austin and Spencer Shaw all added
singles to the Cardinal offense.
Risius started on the mound for
Garner and gave up 11 hits with
a walkd and two strikeouts. Zach
Buseman relieved Risius in the fifth
inning to finish the game with three
hits and a strikeout.
Mason City Newman has
dominated the North Iowa
Conference through the past decade
and their emphasis on baseball
continues to keep them on top of
the league. The Knights had little
difficulty handling the underdog
Cardinals as they rolled to a 15 – 0
four inning decision on Wednesday.
The Knights threw their ace
against Garner, resulting in a perfect
game for the Newman hurler. G-H
was able to send only 12 batters to
the plate in the four-inning contest.
Lance Austin allowed six hits and
six walks with a pair of strikeouts in
his starting appearance against the
Knights. Heath Hutcheson relieved
Austin in the third, giving up five
hits and a walk.
Lake Mills is one of the North
Iowa Conference’s top teams
this season and the Bulldogs are
currently ranked ninth in Class 2A,
making Friday’s game another tough
task for the Cards. The Bulldogs
threatened to make a short night
of this contest, surging to a 10 – 1
lead after three innings but the
Cardinals put together some offense
through the remainder of the game,
scoring once in the third, twice in
the fourth and three times in the fifth
to keep the game interesting. Lake
Mills added an insurance run in the
seventh on the way to a 13 – 8 win
over the Cards.
Joe Ermer had a good night
offensively for Garner, collecting
two RBI’s with a double. Zach
Buseman also had two RBI’s with
a single and Josh Thoebald added a
pair of base hits to the offense. Blake
Risius, Nathan Hrubes and Lance
Austin all singled for Garner in the
game as well.
Joe Ermer went the distance on the
mound for G-H, scattering 15 hits
and four walks with a strikeout.
Garner-Hayfield is now 1-9 in
North Iowa Conference action
and 3 – 18 – 1 overall. The Cards
are scheduled to travel to Osage
on Monday and Forest City on
Wednesday before hosting Belmond
on Friday.
WH Baseball splits
in Conference Play
West Hancock’s full schedule last week quickly turned into a light
one as they only played games Monday and Friday. The Eagles were
to play Forest City on Wednesday and Lake Mills Thursday, but both
were rescheduled due to wet conditions. They will now take on Forest
City at home this Thursday and Lake Mills away in a double header
Friday.
Last week, the men beat Garner-Hayfield for the second time this
season in Garner 10-7. Both teams went scoreless through the first
inning before they stayed plate for plate for the next three. They both
scored one run in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth
to keep the game interesting. The score was 6-6 heading into the fifth
inning.
The Eagles pulled ahead in the fifth with two added runs and one
more in the sixth to bring the score to 9-6. They added one more in the
top of the seventh for good measure before the Cards answered back
in the bottom of the seventh, but their one run wasn’t enough as the
Eagles walked away with the 10-7 win.
Jonny Eeckhoff took to the mound for the Eagles striking out seven
and walking four before Tim Smidt closed in the seventh striking-out
one. The Cards were only able to strikeout three Eagles as they connected
for 14 hits on the night.
Zac Paulus drove in three runs and had a double for the Eagles. Ryan
Fedders, John Burgardt and Eeckhoff all added doubles. Burgardt connected
for three more hits and Eeckhoff for two resulting in two RBI’s
each. Josiah Eckels, Smidt and Fedders all added two hits each to complete
the 14 hits for the Eagles.
Friday the men headed to Belmond-Klemme to take on the Broncos
where they lost 1-2 in nine innings. The game was a quiet one at the
plate as both teams went scoreless through the first eight innings. Tim
Smidt pitched giving up seven hits and two runs with two walked batters
and striking out ten.
The Eagles managed four hits on the night. Josiah Eckels batted two
of them while Tim Smidt connected for one and Zac Paulus hit a single
to bring in Eckels to score the first run in the game in the top of the
ninth.
Both teams decided the ninth inning was the time to bring in runs
as the Broncos answered in the bottom with two runs to steal the win
from the Eagles.
The men enter their final full week of regular season with a full
schedule playing games every night. Monday they head to North
Iowa, Tuesday they return home to take on Central Springs. Wednesday
will be in Britt against Newman and Thursday will also be in Britt
with Forest City. Friday they will head to Lake Mills to play a double
header and next Tuesday marks their final regular season game against
Osage at home.
Celebrate…Remember…Fight Back
Hancock County cancer survivors (above) had plenty of reason to “Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.” The 2011 Hancock County
Relay for Life raised an estimated $91,500 for cancer research and other programs supported by the American Cancer Society.
The group of approximately 70 survivors gathered in front of the bleachers for a photo Saturday evening. (Leader photo by Rebecca
