In its 13th year, this year’s <strong>Festival</strong> promises to be more<br />
magical than ever as we introduce a new location – the Stoney<br />
Creek Inn – and new special events which will delight and<br />
surprise <strong>Festival</strong>-goers <strong>of</strong> all ages.<br />
A week <strong>of</strong> wonder, the cornerstone <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Festival</strong> experience is<br />
the wonderland <strong>of</strong> decorated trees, wreaths, mantles and other<br />
specialty items available for silent auction. <strong>Festival</strong> trees are no<br />
ordinary trees – they are masterpieces. The artistry, creativity,<br />
and fun-loving nature <strong>of</strong> the decorators is awe-inspiring, for<br />
where else can you find trees decorated with chrome, full-size<br />
bird houses, or ribbons as big as your head? From traditional<br />
to whimsical, everyone in your family is sure to find a favorite.<br />
And, if the wonderland <strong>of</strong> trees is the cornerstone <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Festival</strong>, the special events are the pillars that build the event<br />
into an extravaganza. Children and families are sure to enjoy<br />
the <strong>Festival</strong>’s ever-popular Teddy Bear Breakfast on Saturday<br />
and the return <strong>of</strong> the Family Brunch on Sunday.<br />
And, if you’re looking for an opportunity for an adult night<br />
out, the <strong>Festival</strong> can deliver with music at three evening events!<br />
The Opening Night Gala on Tuesday allows you the first<br />
glimpse <strong>of</strong> the event. If you were around for black and white<br />
TV, bobby socks and poodle skirts (or if you’re just in the<br />
mood to groove to the oldies!), the “Jingle Bell Rock” event on<br />
Wednesday evening is the event for you!<br />
If you’re looking for a chance to unwind on Friday,<br />
look no further than The <strong>Festival</strong>….Unplugged.<br />

A Special Time!<br />
This event allows senior citizens to get a sneak peek<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Festival</strong>’s wondrous array <strong>of</strong> holiday items.<br />
It is especially designed to give those with walkers<br />
or wheelchairs an opportunity to attend before the<br />
<strong>Festival</strong> is too busy and crowded.
Good Grief<br />
The holiday season can be especially difficult for bereaved families. There are particular<br />
challenges <strong>of</strong> evaluating what part <strong>of</strong> a tradition to keep or modify. How do you manage<br />
with the many social commitments or general expectations when you really are not<br />
feeling ‘up to it’?<br />
In reviewing the many resources on-line regarding grief and the holidays, I found one list<br />
quite useful, as well as a handy reference to the classic - ‘Twelve Days <strong>of</strong> Christmas.’ I<br />
share it with hope that it may bring you some peace and healing.<br />
1. Set boundaries on your own and others’ expectations<br />
Planning for the holidays and deciding on practical matters<br />
may be overwhelming. Set priorities and limits on what you<br />
do and don’t do. If it’s too much to cook or decorate, ask<br />
others to help or delegate chores including shopping and<br />
decorating.<br />
2. Change a tradition even if just for this year.<br />
Have dinner somewhere else; make it a buffet instead <strong>of</strong><br />
a sit down. Go to a different place <strong>of</strong> worship. Change the<br />
location <strong>of</strong> the tree or other holiday decorations or leave<br />
them out completely. Go with the flow <strong>of</strong> your heart.<br />
3. Be flexible...Nothing is written in stone.<br />
The wonderful thing about a mind is that you can always<br />
change it. Grief can cause unpredictable mood swings. If you<br />
make a plan always communicate your need for an open<br />
door policy. This is not the time to worry about what others<br />
think about you.<br />
4. Have a family meeting or phone conference<br />
Before making decisions it might be helpful to share<br />
feelings, needs and suggestions. One way to do this is to<br />
just give everyone a time to speak without interruption and<br />
without judgment. Listen to each other and try to create an<br />
atmosphere <strong>of</strong> mutual respect and understanding.<br />
5. Listen to the children<br />
If there are children in the family circle listen to their ideas<br />
and suggestions. Include them in the problem solving and<br />
in the planning. Out <strong>of</strong> the mouths <strong>of</strong> babes <strong>of</strong>ten come<br />
wisdom that can be useful for planning the day as well as<br />
acknowledging their grief feelings and importance to the<br />
family.<br />
6. Remember gifts come in many shapes and<br />
sizes and they’re not always wrapped.<br />
What is the gift your loved one gave you? If you give gifts,<br />
share something that in some way connects the gift to your<br />
loved one, their hobby or favorite color. If shopping malls are<br />
too stressful use catalogues, gift certificates or even special<br />
items that belonged to your loved one.<br />

7. Take time for rest and create a day <strong>of</strong> self-care.<br />
The stress <strong>of</strong> grief and the holiday madness can create<br />
undue anxiety and tension. Take time for relaxation whether<br />
it is a massage, exercise, or a day in the country. Do<br />
something good for yourself!<br />
8. Honor your emotional life<br />
To thine own self be true. Take time to talk about your<br />
feelings and thoughts with a friend or loved one. Sometimes<br />
attempting to be strong is just not necessary. Make time for<br />
rituals and healing moments that permit access to your heart<br />
and spirit.<br />
9. Don’t be afraid to mention the name<br />
<strong>of</strong> your loved one and share memories.<br />
Honor the life <strong>of</strong> your loved one by saying their name,<br />
displaying photo albums, talking about favorite memories,<br />
lighting a candle in their honor. Letting others know your<br />
comfort in talking about your loved one will help them open<br />
up as well.<br />
10. Do something totally different.<br />
If you need to get away to a new location or completely<br />
delete the holiday experience, do so and let go <strong>of</strong> the<br />
guilt. Although we know we cannot run away from the grief<br />
sometimes we need a space and place far removed from<br />
the everyday reminders. If that is so, give yourself permission<br />
and go.<br />
11. Connect to the Spiritual.<br />
Some find it walking on the beach, some in church, some in<br />
meditation, music and prayer. Do whatever it is for you that<br />
somehow brings you to the quiet place within.<br />
12. Make some kind <strong>of</strong> plan.<br />
Remember that anything can be changed at the last minute.<br />
Have some tentative plan for some part <strong>of</strong> the day. Be gentle<br />
with yourself. This will not be a perfect day...Listen to your<br />
heart and to an inner wisdom.<br />

people we love—people who are living and those who<br />
have died.<br />

and personalize a two-inch polished brass<br />
holiday ornament that will be displayed<br />
on the <strong>Aspirus</strong> Comfort Care and Hospice<br />
Services holiday tree in the lobby <strong>of</strong> <strong>Aspirus</strong><br />
Wausau Hospital beginning in November.<br />
Your ornament will be mailed to you the second<br />
week <strong>of</strong> December.<br />
The Tree <strong>of</strong> Love tribute program is a service <strong>of</strong><br />
the bereavement program and is not a fundraising<br />

Did you ever think a fortune cookie could <strong>of</strong>fer a pr<strong>of</strong>ound message <strong>of</strong> comfort,<br />
happiness, and peace in a life that is overwhelmed with grief? In our original program<br />
last year, we challenged participants to look for 12 Gifts <strong>of</strong> Hope. The Results program<br />
will re-introduce the concept <strong>of</strong> the fortune cookie and demonstrate how it has helped<br />
heal grief; not just through the holidays, but for all seasons, anniversary dates, and<br />
special events. Learn how others changed their focus from what they were missing to<br />
the “blessings” they have received. Come discover a season <strong>of</strong> good fortune ahead.<br />
